This is NOT your average house plant! Although it looks like or may even be a plant in your home, do NOT try an experiment such as this.
On today's episode, Coyote travels to Costa Rica to compare the effects of the Dumb Cane leaf, stalk, and stem when touched to his arm. Perhaps not surprisingly to some, he was also dumb enough to touch the stem to his tongue!
While Coyote's side effects in this video were mild, make no mistake, this plant can cause severe irritation, burning, and even death.

plants don't sting.
@nsevv It depends on what you consider a sting. Venom being injected by a spine is pretty applicable to both ants and stinging nettles, just saying.
I got exposed to this when I was a teenager. My mother grew tired with this plant and I cut it up with my bare hands. I thought I was going to die. Nothing remove the effects. It was the worst experience of my life.
But an experience nonetheless, about what not to do 😆
As Homer Simpson would say: "That was the worst experience of your life *so far*"

In all fairness he would of done it anyway.
just when you thought you've seen everything, you find out there's a plant that basically has fiberglass shards in its sap.
I mean, pineapples have the same thing.
That + the acidity and the bromelain which actively dissolves skin tissue is why it can be so unpleasant to eat.
I eat pineapples because i like the texture but i didnt know the texture and taste i was looking for was fiberglass ;-;
Rhubarb too right?
There's actually a berry out there that's just like that. Backyard scientist has a segment on it in his video where he gets stung by a gympie gympie
@@juginstinThat sounds interesting to check out. Coyote did the gympie gympie too, along with the Devil's toilet paper he referenced in this vid. It was so painful and there are just like... forests of the plant!
Always a pleasure to see this man alive !!

Fun facts: calcium oxalate crystals is the same stuff kidney stones are made of. ;)
And still causes pain. Lol
Either way, didnt know this. Ty. ^_^
I knew it sounded familiar! 🎉
And Gout, but in the joint of your big toe for some reason. Very painful.
@@tomclayton6875 Yup, gout happens because of molecules naturally broken down in your blood that get turned into uric acid crystals. It happens in the big toe because that's the farthest place from the heart so there's less blood flowing through it (or at least at a reduced speed rate) because the heart works harder to pump blood back up.

**Coyote** Imma do it
DEFINITELY AGREE WITH THAT GOOD JOB ✌️👍
Coyote is the type of guy who will wake up during an operation and walk out.
Not before indexing the pain of an open cut
HAHAHA THIS IS FUNNY WHY THIS COMMENT IS SO UNDERRATED
Hello there. I'm an agronomist and my PhD thesis was in calcium oxalate crystals. Another species with similar effects is Philodendron sp. These species have developed a great defense mechanism to prevent herbivores from eating them. Though the role of these crystals is not just for defense but also for calcium storage and for the protection of the photosynthetic mechanism under stress. Another very common species that has raphide shaped Calcium Oxalate crystals is the grapevine. But these crystals are less in quantity and of shorter length thus eating food made with vineleaves like the Turkish Dolma isn't lethal for you.
Other plants to test:
Manchineel
Hogweed (and other phototoxic plants)
Tread-softly
Pain bush
Parsnip
There are also poisonous if eaten and hallucinogenic plants, but you probably don’t wanna go down that road haha
Jimson weed
Hemlock
Nightshade
Foxglove
Foxglove (digitalis) is used to make the heart medication Digoxin. It's rarely used anymore. Patients have to have their blood tested to ensure they weren't in toxicity, but even within "normal" levels it would slowly poison your other body systems.
"Do you feel dumber" got me
There's always the manchineel tree. It's claimed that just standing under one during a rain storm is enough to give you blisters on your skin.
Need to see this
Don't give this man ideas!
I was thinking of it too, and I'm sure they're aware of it, but I cannot think of a safe(ish) way for him to test that one.
He probably wouldn't be able to test the effects, but he could possibly wear a protective suit just to record and talk about the tree.
I wouldn't want to see him suffer like that lol. He already puts himself through enough for us. ❤
Coyote: now we're off on our next adventure.😀 2:49

“I’m coyote Peterson, and I’m about to enter the bite zone of the inland taipan”
For SCIENCE!
I don't think you want that bite
@@cheapspeed you don’t know me
King cobra
Assuming he had the correct antivenin and just so happened to be in a hospital as he got bitten, thus ensuring his survival (look up all recorded inland taipan bites), it actually wouldn't make for much of a video. Pins and needles and numbness at most.
Gaboon vipers, puff adders, bushmasters, or frankly anything that's either cytotoxic or haemotoxic, now that would make for an exciting video. Better yet, imagine he did it somewhere in rural Africa where the nearest clinic is an hour away.
The venom of the large vipers don't reach anywhere near the potency of the inland taipan, but the pain would be through the roof, and chances of survival are actually more uncertain due to the workings of cytotoxins not being fully understood.
8:17 IM COYOTE FIERIE AND WERE GOING TO FLAVOR TOWN!!!
Thank you Brave Wilderness to all the crew who make this possible!
"Are you dumber?" 😂😂 Best question ever asked on this channel!
So happy Coyote even dares to taste it with his tongue. What an absolute legend he really is!
He strongly overexaggerated the risks and effects. The plant is an irritant, but that's about it. No chemical burns either, as the calcium oxalate (he called it oxide -.-) raphides cause purely mechanical damage. Even most people who got the plant into their mouth do not need serious medical help: An analgesic + antihistamine to keep down pain and inflammation at best. The raphides can probably be dissolved with citric acid/sulfamic acid solution.
meeting you a few years ago in SeaTac Airport when you were on your way north for Orca was such a cool moment. My kids and I were glued to your Sting-zone vids and we talked about the warrior wasp.

Hello Coyote! I have a plant for you. I was at your meet and greet at Costa Rica and I asked you to sign my frog with an eyeliner😅 anyway the plant is called the Manchineel Tree⚠️ but be careful, the milky sap causes blistering, burns, and inflammation when in contact with the skin, mucous membranes, and conjunctivae. Anway be careful and I love all your vids😁

There is also the Florida Poisontree/Hog Gum tree, Common Rue/Herb of Grace, Chechen Tree/Black Poisonwood, Blind-your-eye Mangrove/Buta buta tree, Cashew Tree, and Chinese Lacquer Tree.
If you're gonna do more stuff like this, I hope you guys have those plastic oral airways that you can put in to keep your throat from completely closing!
I was just gonna say this. This is different than a sting or bite, this is basically directly hitting the tongue/throat. This type of stuff is way more dangerous imo.
Yeah. I actually wish he hadn't spared us the vomiting, because it's medically useful to know as much as possible about the reaction. Vomiting = loss of water, loss of nutrients, burning of the throat, more exhaustion, more risk of cardiac problems. It can in some cases be worse than the thing that caused it.

Coyote shot so far past the ultimate Darwin Award he circled back around.
A possible antidote would be a mixture of dillute citrate + EDTA or dillute solution of sulfamic acid. Those should be able to dissolve the raphides in no time. Generally speaking though, the majority of people is just fine with a mild analgesic and an antihistamine.
You’re too smart for this comment section aha

Because he tells everybody that these stings are more risky and dangerous than they actually are.
