    The part about reaching out to composers is brutally honest and that's why I'm subscribed to this channel.

    I still keep watching your videos although I am not a composer and I create music only as a hobby. These Q&A videos are a great approach and provide some insight, often with some 'oh I never thought about that' surprise. Thanks for doing this!

    Anything, any single piece of advice coming from Anne-Kathrin is pure gold.
    Being a professional pianist/organist/composer myself, I second every sentence that she says. The core of everything in this niche business - she talks about it all „as is”. From locating here from Europe (just like myself), making it in this horrendously difficult business, to constantly learning and mastering necessary skills (believe me - it’s HARD !)… Skills not only in music : also in software, hardware, communication, PR, multi-tasking, and now : video editing and producing her own brilliant content… And all of that on top of writing great music (can’t stop listening to The Jade Pendant soundtrack, and analyzing it with my students).
    In this day and age it’s easy to troll, amonymously criticize others on websites, or give false advises, false impressions. This business is NOT for everyone. So dreamers : beware. Do your homework passionately, honestly and completely. No shortcuts allowed…
    Anne-Kathrin in her videos touched just the tip of an iceberg, but the actual ice shelf is miles deep… Best from WDW, FL.

    I would love to see, you teaching us;
    1- How to make a template in Cubase 11 or 12 , how to insert effects
    2- How to mix and master a track you finished.
    (I know you did it in past, but that seems just like an overview, I personally want to see it building from scratch, because I think "cubase how to" videos are lacking and if we have a film composer doing it that would be extremely valuable )

    Being new to the composer community I came to the David Kudell/Spitfire controversy a year late, and had read a lot of the criticism before actually viewing his entry. So I remember sort of bracing myself as I started it, then almost instantly thinking "wait... this is freaking fantastic... what is wrong with people?" Very glad he's done well since then and fallen in with good people like yourself. And yes, I've also enjoyed Chris Siu's content, I think before I even found your channel. Anyway thanks for yet more great insights! Dorky out!

      The irony is that a lot of composers reached out to David BECAUSE of the backlash and how well he handled it. So I guess the joke's on the haters!

    I really enjoy watching your videos even though I compose music just as a retired hobby. Perhaps a piece of advice to anyone who aspires to a career in film music (or in music in general) - you should consider in good time and honestly (!) whether you're not just good but extraordinarily good, and whether you really have the energy and willingness to take risks . When faced with the decision, I was very good at music, but excellent at math, physics and chemistry. I opted for an academic and later an industrial career and was very successful and happy there. I never had to give up music for it - and music never became the disappointment of my life.
    I admire your tenacity!

    Thanks for all the information. I have this creative child in me trying to get out so I’m trying to figure out all this music technology and your channel is very helpful. I haven’t watched all your videos… yet… but of the ones I have watched I haven’t heard any mention of scoring products like Dorico, MuseScore or StaffPad. Are these tools part of your workflow at all? When you have a piece ready to record how do you get all the notes to the players? Watching the video on Vienna Essemble Pro it appears these tool aren’t really used and you just sit at the MIDI controller and create.

    With all the epic percussion Composers add to their mockup, And maybe two percussionists in the orchestra, do you generate audio files for the extra percussion Parts? Then do you have the percussion players only play two of the parts that are common in the orchestra percussion section?

    Hi Anne, very informative video content. A little clarification please; do ALL movie music composers give up their rights to the music they have composed. Who actually owns the rights for performing, publishing etc? Love the channel BTW.

    • @AnneKathrinDernComposer
      @AnneKathrinDernComposer  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching! It's common on most commercial productions for the composers to give up their publishing rights. They tend to keep the writer's share for themselves, the studios / production companies acquire the publishing share and all licenses. Only on low budget indies it would be more common for the composers to retain all rights.

    What's a undertone music means wrt Film scoring ?
    Brief given to score a war scene was Music needs to be intense but at the same time it should be undertone.

    Ms Dern - Do you incorporate VEP into ALL of your projects regardless of size? I understand the concept and power of the software (I have a 2nd PC controlling many Kontakt Instruments) and just curious if this is the best practice of just using it anytime I need to use VSTs and other soft instruments instead of stand-alone instances. Thank you!

    When is part 8 comming? can we ask questions still? :) Mine is quiet straightforward. I am a professional musician (violin) playing in an orchetra an teaching. In my spare time I like to arrange/compose, but my techinque is limited, results are mediocre at best. I do not have time/energy to invest in full training (ie university) at this point. if you were in my situation, how you would go around learning? Thank you!

    I really like your appoach to collaborating with other film composers, especially in an in an industry which (in my opinion) can be exploitative. I have questions. How common is it for film composers to hire or work with other composers in that way? I don't get the impression that this practice is widespread. I was always under the impression that there is only ever one composer behind the film.
