  • I've been using the Razer Raion since it came out. When this was announced, it piqued my interest. Could this $50-$60 fight pad from Hori outclass the $80-$110 one from Razer?

      @@BimBurger interesting so how does this work? I have a dualshock 4 and put individual dpad buttons in it from battlebeaver and it works great. But, these buttons are kinda flimsy. And when you have to replace them you have to take apart your controller which isn’t bad but not fun either
      Is the dpad good on this thing? In what way? Do you get less diagonals? How does the whole adjusting dpad sensitivity work?
      I do NOT a understand why companies do not just build a solid dpad that doesn’t register diagonals so easy. With mk11, you want down forward, not down diag forward. Do individual dpad buttons work great.
      Does this accomplish that ? Thx for review

    • @BimBurger
      @BimBurger  Před 2 lety

      @@howdydoodydoo3631 I thought I already answered these questions, but doesn't seem like I have. I'll do my best.
      The dpad is okay. I still think the Raion is better once you get used to the weirdness of having 8 switches. I think the DS4/ DualSense dpads are better still. But the Octa dpad is still very usable, but I don't think it's the best experience on the market.
      The way sensitivity works is that the controller just requires more force per button or combination of buttons (for diagnonals) before it goes ahead and gives the signal that a direction has been pressed to the computer or console. If you completely bring diagonals' sensitivity down, you have to REALLY press hard on the two cardinal directions before it registers as a press.
      For the MK11 d - f without going df, I think it's okay for that, although I did suffer a few unintentional jumps while shimmying. Decreasing the sensitivity on the diagonals helps quite a bit.

    I've been looking for a fight pad that can perform clean diagonal inputs because there is this blocking technique in GG Strive that requires you to repeatedly press diagonal down. With regular dpad you'll likely back dash accidentally or won't block at all because it's difficult to press back and down at the exact same time. If this controller solves that then I would want to buy it.

    • @BimBurger
      @BimBurger  Před 2 lety

      Hmmm, I'm not sure, actually. I have trouble with electrics with this thing because of the way the dpad is shaped. It's not that I find it hard to hit diagonals, but I feel like it is physically connected to both the down and left and right directions. I think you could make it work through the software. You can probably reduce the sensitivity of the cardinal directions to make the diagonals more sensitive.

    great review! im looking for a new controller since sadly my raion dpad has gotten loose and has a hard time registering diagonal inputs now (which really sucks because ive only used it for about 2 months and it's my fav fighting game controller). I tried going into the controller and fixing it myself since i had already modded the controller when i got it and put a lil pivot in the center of the dpad so it doesnt input all directions at once but I wasnt able to find a problem other than I think the elasticity of the rubberpad membrane has gotten worse. I hear razer has silently updated the controller and now has a pivot in the dpad but I fear the same thing will happen and it will get loose fairly quickly, how has your raion held up to now btw because im curious about it's durability and maybe i just got unlucky. the raion these days is also dirt cheap 30$ so i might just get another one even with the risk, tho the commander octa is definitely giving it a run for its money.
    for me a big feature of the octa is that is has a notched analog stick (i also hear it's less loose than most analog sticks which is great for fighting games) because before i got the raion i used to just use the ps4 analog stick because i despise using dpads, in fact for the raion i actually just hot glued an old n64 thumbstick to it and essentially made a tiny arcade joystick which was perfect but alas didnt last long. also it's kind of funny a lot of your cons are actually pros for me, I prefer holding a fightpad like a controller so the handle is great and the clicky buttons is also a pro since i dont smack the buttons either. sorry for the rant lol but all that in mind i think im gonna end up getting the hori instead since it seems to have more features i care about and will hopefully last longer.

      I love that you bring a whole new point of view to it. Yes, of course, everything I brought up was mostly personal preference because the controller in and of itself is fantastic, and the only things I found wrong were essentially nitpicks.

I could feel the diagonals missing more and more lately. Until finally one diagonal on the lower right side just stopped working all together.

    I'm a fight pad player myself. I've used the fighting commander before this one, I'm currently using the raion, but I think the best one I've used with the six button layout is the 8bitdo m30. It has the same circular dpad but the cross is more pronounced. The face buttons are solid once you get used to the size of the upper three buttons (which are smaller), and the shoulder buttons are satisfying to press. My biggest issue with it is that it's really small and it has caused my hands to cramp, and also since it's only a switch/PC controller, I can't use it in PS4 tournaments.
    I'm kind of tempted to pick this one up just to try out the novelty of playing with the gated analog stick with the six button layout. I only play soul calibur so there's a bigger deal of 3d movement, wonder how it works with the analog stick. Man, I have searched far and wide (Pokémon reference lol) for a fight stick here in Canada and the options are barebones at the moment. The only fight stick that I’ve seen for sale here in Canada is the fighting stick alpha (the one I want) which was readily available but now is sold out thanks to SF6 lol so when I should have purchased one months ago I didn’t. Looked at Mayflash, Mad Catz and Qanba and nothing. They don’t ship outside or certain countries or the United States. Closest I came was yesterday when I purchased the fighting stick alpha from Canada computers (which said on their site “available for online orders only, sold out in-stores” only to get an email a couple hours later saying the item is actually on back order (that’s a bit misleading and scummy). I do have the Victrix Pro BFG controller and tried it out but didn’t like it very much for fighting games. The Victrix fight sticks are available and can ship to Canada but it’s listed at $546cdn without duties/taxes included lol. Looks like my only option is to pick this controller up and wait for my fight stick from Canada computers to come back in stock and ship to me (if it ever does)

    I loved the one I HAD but it wouldn't work correctly. The PS5 mode wouldn't work at all no matter what firmware updates I did and would disconnect all the time. That being said it's a fantastic fighting controller if it works😅

    • @BimBurger
      @BimBurger  Před rokem

      Typically yeah - it doesn't have a right stick. So modern games that use the right stick for camera controls or something like that won't be playable on this. However, classic arcade games work so well on the Octa. Even modern brawlers like Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT Shredder's Revenge work awesome on it.

    I don't understand the complaint about the handles. Surely the point of getting a fight pad is to be able to play with your thumbs. For me, at least, using my fingers on the buttons is much more of a barrier to using arcade sticks than the joystick itself (and if you want to do that, why not get a stick or a hitbox?).

    • @BimBurger
      @BimBurger  Před 2 lety +2

      Valid points, of course. My complaints are very personal and are very specific to me, I guess. I have an easier time with movement with a dpad and an easier time when I use three fingers for the buttons. Being a King player, when I do land those chain grabs, I need to press three or four buttons simultaneously so a "claw" grip is better.
      Just hoping for the best of both worlds.

    • @MechaCatFish
      @MechaCatFish Před 2 lety

      @@BimBurger That's fair enough. I guess the only way to split the difference would be with something modular, which would probably come at the cost of build quality. I think having my hands asymmetrical would throw me off enough to counterbalance the familiarity of the d-pad. I'm also one of those mythical analogue-stick players so I've been waiting for a controller with this exact layout since SFIV.
