    Just the way you practice emergency procedures in an aircraft, go out to an open area where you won't bump into anything and practice and get used to the controls and how they react and feel before you use them in a confined area.

    Are there thruster options with green/red arrows on the controls reversed? In North America, it is "Region B" for buoy colours, so port is green and staboard is red. All I see on vessels is the Region A style.

    How does a single pilot (no crew) tie off a boat like yours alone? I am thinking that you are using the thrusters to dock off nicely when you have a crew to help you, but what if you are running the boat alone and there are no dockhands to help? I am concerned about the part of leaving the boat unattended to tie off the ropes.

  • @torefoss7654
    @torefoss7654 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Turn the rudder or sterndrive so the stern will power away from the pier when you set the throttle(s) in gear and at the same time you use the bowthruster to power away from the pier. Then you will move sideways away from the pier as if you have a sternthruster too. Just practice so you can learn how your boat behaves. Some may have strong engines and weak thrusters. Use only one engine if you have two ore more engines. And just remember that you will also move a little bit forward. I use this quite often and i always back the boat a little so I get some momentum backwards before i set the gears forward. Then the motion back will cancel out the slight forward motion you will get. Once again, every boat behaves differently so get to know yours first.

      If you do some courses to qualify as a deckhand you'll find local yacht clubs and cruiser people looking for a hand on board. There are adverts in my local marina, by skippers and by deckhands. It means you can get out in the water, you'll have to work a bit, but they get free crew and you get a free trip.

    I'm at a slight loss: Fairline offer a bow thruster as an option with their Targa Volvo Penta IPS boats, but why would one need a bow thruster if the boat's equipped with IPS with an EVC joystick? Surely the IPS/EVC functions do everything that separate bow and stern thrusters can do (and more!)

    • @user-ju5ru3yg7n
      @user-ju5ru3yg7n Před měsícem

      I'm no expert but I think the joystick control is very aggressive and causes wear on the gearbox. I think the bow thruster or better still a bow and stern thruster is better for the gearbox and promotes learning of the rudimentary skills.

    • @nicco9014
      @nicco9014 Před 3 lety +1

      Even with one screw you can. If you whant the boat to move to port, you thrust to port and kick your engine with the wheel hard to starboard . It might take a bit of practise to master, especially with this "on/off" thruster, bit it is possible.
