America's Equity Obsession: An Interview with Heather Mac Donald

  • Leading American institutions have adopted a simple ideological explanation for the nation’s perceived ills: systemic racism. Why are black Americans overrepresented in prisons and underrepresented in C-suites? Why do members of different groups tend to perform differently on standardized tests? From the concert hall to the faculty lounge to the corporate boardroom, our leaders insist that racial disparities can be fixed only with racial discrimination traveling under the banner of “equity.” That threatens not only American excellence but also the signal achievements of Western Civilization, according to Heather Mac Donald, author of When Race Trumps Merit: How the Pursuit of Equity Sacrifices Excellence, Destroys Beauty, and Threatens Lives.
In this wide-ranging interview, Mac Donald will join City Journal editor Brian C. Anderson to discuss her new book, which exposes the hollowness of America’s equity obsession. Mac Donald will show how simplistic disparate-impact thinking jeopardizes scientific progress, destroys public order, and poisons the appreciation of art and culture.

And will as long as we are all free to choose. That’s the next step - making sure that freedom is taken away. The only thing that ever made America exceptional has been its meritocracy. That’s it. @@junsu21 Obvious to a 2023 left-wing knee-jerk reactionary programmed to see everything through the lens of race. Did IQs drop sharply in the last couple of years? How do you hold down a job? My post had zero to do with race, and everything to do with academia, who have canceled the meritocracy it used to champion.
Here's the point for all you whose IQs never squirt above 100. You want to reduce this to race since you're programmed see everything through that lens? Fine. Discriminating against asians because as a race they tend to perform better on entrance exams and GPAs is the most racist thing I can think of. This denies patients access to doctors who would perform better and save lives. Instead they give automatic advancement to people literally because of the color of their skin or what they happen to have between their legs. All they have to do is "check the box." (You might have someone smart explain what the box is.) While this phenomenon (sorry to use a word with more than 1 syllable) may not be as damaging to human life in other fields, it can be in other fields like brain surgery. You still with me? Do I need to draw you pictures? This is the absolute worst type of racism, because on the surface it looks like anti-racism.
Here's an analogy that might be beyond you, but you can have a smart friend explain it. Let's say that the NBA had an initiative in place where they assessed that there weren't enough 5' 5" white guys in the league. So they automatically advanced anybody in that category. (I know you're a leftist, and stupid, but please follow along.) The team with the most 5' 5" white guys would lose every game. The only thing racist in this whole equation is that they denied opportunities to exceptionally qualified, mostly people of color. And would you pick the team with all the 5' 5" white guys in your fantasy league? No? Whaa? You racist pig.
By elevating less qualified people to occupy life and death jobs (or any job requiring aptitude), you are A) dumbing down the workforce, B) denying access to better candidates (inequality), C) potentially threatening lives and D) diminishing faith in the very race you're trying to help. You want to have a conversation about inequality of schools? Fine, let's have that conversation. That's a legit point. Then I will mention that parenting (or lack thereof) is largely responsible for poor grades. There are people from bad schools who are up to the task. Ben Carson may or may not be one of those. I have no idea how many people he might have killed on the operating table. I'm suspicious by his switch to politics. What I do know is that he appears to be a very nice guy.
Most people instinctively know what I've said is right, but are too cowardly to say it. No doubt because stupid people will call them racist. I happen to not care what a moron programmed by media and academia thinks. You got a rebuttal? I can hardly wait. This is going to be priceless. But please have somebody smart explain the previous paragraphs first, because we already know your IQ or reading comprehension is sub-par.

It's not common for such a highly intelligent person to simultaneously be so brave. Intellectual bravery of her caliber is depressingly rare. Most intellectuals I know (especially in education) are spiritual cowards. The only way these issues will be resolved is through actually engaging with the truth. It's made all the more obvious by their open and overt admission that this is the objective. For the last 105 years they've relied on incrementalism and academic word salad in order to finally achieve this goal; this generation is just very impatient and wants it NOW. You can trace this phenomenon to our public school system the past two decades, and parents who were hands-off and simply trusted the public school system to teach history and civics to their children. This "disparate impact" baloney went on the march in 2013 and their catalyst for forcing this transformation was George Floyd and social media. This is as close as they've ever gotten to collapsing Western civilization and they're not about to let this opportunity slip from their fingers.

As she stated, the racism isn’t in the standards it’s in the discrimination and racism in the system by writing off black Americans and not making sure they are knowledgeable (which is deliberate). It’s still racist, the only differences are the mechanisms. It’s manufactured failure and regrettable substitution, when one method “fails” a new one takes its place. This DEI nonsense is no different, the goal isn’t to help, it’s to give validation to WS and “prove” it right (even though it was constructed and planned)…

No matter the specific reason for the failure, you could not figure out how to overcome it that time. Hopefully the experience of failure this time will teach you enough to succeed next time. If you are being told that there is no point in trying because of race or gender, how likely is it that you will even try? If you never try you, you will never succeed. If you mis-diagnose the reason for your failure how likely is it that you will succeed if you try again? This lecture is a much needed contribution to the race debate.

Start relying on yourself as individuals and members of a nuclear family. It starts with the family period but the families here are non-existent. I taught college physics for 30 odd years, and I've seen a huge decline in student preparation for STEM classes. Basically, most state/local high schools have become a total waste of time for students with math/science aptitudes. For one, curricula doesn't allow for such things as lab periods for learning the tools of inquiry, and two, the teachers have ED-college degrees and don't understand the subjects adequately. Of course, students are not longer "tracked" by academic achievement; my daughter read on a college level in 8th grade while her school 8th failed the No-Child exams, so everyone was put in remedial classes, so everyone could suffer. I told her to just take whatever books she was reading to class and ignore the teacher. I've also advised bright high school students to dropout and take community colleges courses, so they are prepared for a rigorous first-year of calculus, chemistry and physics, all necessary for advancement. So many students have to spend 5 or more years in a decent engineering program, because so many have to do remedial work at a huge expense to their education. So far as disparate impacts, universities have been favoring less qualified women over men for my entire career, they'll hire someone foreign whole looks "ethnic" over the qualified white male. I believe this has enables much of the current university admin, which is all-in on "diversity", anti-racism, and black-lives. Except for football, Track&Field, basketball etc. Where of course whites are continually unrepresented. Thank Christ for trans women pushing racial parity in NCAA events. Being a woman+ might be just the ticket for qualified whites to get into medical schools, etc. What's one penis sacrificed for a stellar career!

So what are you saying, that I needed to be "castrated" to be hired by an organisation or corporation with diversity quotas? Screw it. I reckon if all organisations or corporations tried to fill diversity quotas, they're likely to run out of minority applicants anyway. There are only so many minority applicants in the job market.

@@bonsummers2657 Educationally Deficient, for sure. Unfortunately, it's become a degree you get after you failed at substantive studies. If you serve enough time, you can get a "doctorate", and it's these creature we now see working as DIE deans, e.g. Stanford, etc.

If any of you want to know what courage looks like: here it is. I even disagree with MacDonald vehemently on Trump and neocon politics, but I do so respectfully. To say this today, in Year Zero Amerika, is quite rebellious. Until we cast off the new structural racism, we are doomed.
