I owned a GTS1000 for many years and it was extraordinary. The handling and stopping were the best I've ridden in a big sport touring machine and the power was ample. On the downside, finding an OEM (Krauser) luggage set was virtually impossible, the ABS was error prone and replacement modules were also rare, and when fron shock failed you had to have a replacement custom made.
I rode a slightly customized, lightened version today. Wow! I was very tempted to buy it. The center of gravity is low enough to make most of the weight unnoticeable. Furthermore the riding stance is totally my thing. The steering is a bit vague / heavy at low speeds, like on small roundabouts, but as soon as you get up to speed a bit it goes on rails.
I owned the GTS with much pleasure from 1995 to 1999. now after 24 years on a perfect Halrey, i was able to buy the GTS again with low milage and in perfect condition. it jus is a perfect curiousity for comfort riding tours. Owning two perfect bikes now, live can't be better.
Good review of a very interesting bike. I never did understand why they built such a futuristic bike and gave it chain drive. It has never been my favourite but I see it as one of the most collectable bike of the last decades

Thank you, great video on a great concept! Yamaha should have produced probably a sports and a touring version. And the last one should have had shaft drive... Then it would have been a serious competitor to the ST1100 and the RT... I have a hard time understanding a sports-tourer concept and I even own a VFR... To me its like a SUV, also a mix that I do not understand... The ideal solution to me would have been a GTS 1000 with shaft drive and single sided swing arms front and rear... Or a similar VFR...
Nothing has been said about real-life experience with the front suspension. Does it provide real benefits justifying such a complexity? (Likely no, otherwise it wouldn't be ditched so quickly.)
It really isn't that complex. All motorcycles have a swing arm at the rear, on the GTS you have the front swingarm, a couple of ball joints and the telescopic steering column. Because the front steering/suspension geometry opposes the tendency to dive when braking, it seems to allow the front suspension to be significantly more supple than conventional (telescopic fork) bikes. It didn't sell because it cost as much as a Ducati or BMW, even though the spec and build quality justified the price. At heart I'm a sports bike guy, but to get the best out of a bike you need to be able to travel to wherever the nearest sports bike roads are. The GTS allows you to do that in reasonable comfort. Surprisingly agile for a bike of its weight, I can't believe that Yamaha gave up on this bike and then went on to produce the ridiculous Niken.
I have an original 5,100 mi. 93. Sure would appreciate knowing the name of the supplier that sells the handle bar risers if you can comment pls. The clip on style are too low for me and it's just harder to ride over longer distances.
Could I buy the cams from this motor and install it on my FZR1000? I’d be cool with 100hp and more useable torque. Some dumbass removed my exup valve so I have literally no low end torque until 4,000rpm
Mayby try swap r1 engine 1998 🤔 dont know if after some point of hold engine regroup it go into frame 😁yea thats probably not gpod idea ypu will need whole electricque change exhaust etc so alot more work 👌🏻
Interesting point about exup. Considering what this bike has, not sure if exup is one of those things. The topic about parts unavailability is pressient. If the exhaust fails I bet you are stuck with a worthless art object. While I have no burning desire to own one, it may be the only forkless bike I might still be able to obtain. Long wanted to go do a trackday on one. I don’t see any other way to assess the RADD systems merits. Or demerits.
Cams alone most likely won't do it. I'm sure the GTS has smaller ports, both inlet and exhaust to keep the gas flow velocity up at low rpm. It pulls well from off-idle without the benefit of EXUP.
Good luck with that. They are truly great bikes, but they go for very modest prices. Ride the damn thing and appreciate it for its dynamic qualities rather than what its "worth".
Cool bike. I totally understand why it didn't sell though. It's way too heavy at almost 600lbs wet (250-270kg), physically a very large bike, the fairing is inadequate (small windscreen) for the size and intended speeds. The position is basically sport bike level leaning, not race bike, but definitely closer to a sport bike than a touring bike. Low and hard to reach clip ons instead of comfy relaxed bars. It's sophistication, or complexity rather, makes servicing and repairs a nightmare. Interesting bike for sure, lots of innovation and refined engineering going on, but ultimately , it's a giant overweight sport bike. Too bad.
A fair assessment, definitely at the sporting end of the sports-touring spectrum. As for why it didn't sell? It cost as much as other premium brands (e.g. Ducati, BMW) and had a similar spec to, and was at least the equal of, the BMW K1200RS, so that shouldn't have been an issue. As for cost to maintain: no more than the contemporary premium brands or any current high-spec motorcycle. I have a 75K mile example that has never seen the inside of a dealer's workshop.

I had a ‘94 version. Rode it over 45,000 miles before selling, still miss it. I did keep a framed dealership poster. Fun bike.
