Stepping on the accelerator/gas pedal when an engine starts is probably just about the worst thing anyone could do for an engine be that Petrol or Diesel, as the engine is still cold and won't have any oil circulation at the top end straight away, so could cause damage to the engine, the same as over revving a cold engine can.
Yeah, never give it throttle when an engine starts especially when it’s trying to start when I see people do that here on CZcams. I’m thinking you are out of your.🤬 mine! Never ever do that!
Crazy how newer diesel with remote start don’t have this issue. My 2013 LML would start right up unplugged in that same type of weather. It would start rough for like 3-4 seconds and after that it’s good 🤷♂️
It’s modern common rail injection systems that make cold starts so much better now. Without using the block heater and with a grid heater delete I’ve started my 2014 Cummins down to 5°F or so and it starts up on the first or second revolution.
@@jonytube I’ve already put in 115k miles in the last 4 and a half years and it’s still going hard. Still haven’t had any issues. Regular maintenance comes a long ways. Do some research on which heavy duty truck is the most reliable. I looked it up way before I bought my truck and they aren’t lying. Plus at least I’m not having to replace a transmission every year like my pops does on his 12 valve 🤦♂️
2020 diesel sprinter om642 motor started up just fine in -20f last winter. The battery had to be heated up but the motor had no issues. Mobil 1 is the best for cold weather since their oils contain the least waxes they have a super low pour point.
Dude, go with 10wt/40 in the coldest three months of the winter. You won't need the grid heater, and you can either all the way down to the minus teens.
Please just cycle the grid heater a time or two and depress the accelerator pedal slightly and hold it about 1/4 down or less if you have governor spring upgrade, then crank, the 12v will fire right up hold it at 7 or 800 rpms till she has enough heat to run on her and maintain rpms. No need to stress the truck
How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings when its not been plugged in? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?
I dont know if you care anymore but i daily drive a 96 (same engine) and it gets below zero here. Even if i dont drive it over the weekend, it always starts right up after cycling the grid heater twice (turn the key and a "wait to start light comes on for a few seconds".).
Seems to me like american cars dont like cold weather or this car is no good. My Audi from 2011 starts only a few seconds slower in that temperature than summer heat. Only difference is a bit more preheat delay and you can hear it turning a tiny bit slower and also a bit more vibration but roughly as easy to start..
Firstly, this truck is more than 12 years older than your Audi. Secondly, this is a diesel engine. Newer diesels start way easier in comparison to this old war horse but are far less reliable.
@karaffens I assure you it is completely healthy. Possibly, his grid heater isn't working the best or at all. I have 2 trucks with the same engine, and they start the exact same way when it's cold. -1 is a bit colder than normal, but if it was 20 degrees, it would crack of like nothing. Also, these engines have governor springs in the pump, so it doesn't rev up immediately upon the first pop. They run slow right off the bat, unlike newer diesels that jump right to 1,500 rpms when cold.
Starts a lot quicker than my neighbors Duramax at forty five degrees. Lots of times he has to wait a couple of hours for the temperature outside to warm up 🤣
I don't get it. Yes, they will start cold. But listen to that poor thing. Not to mention that starter is probably hot enough to cook on by now. You're shortening the life of your truck. Just plug it in.
Nice cold start!! I can see that back window through the wheel well 👍🏻 Well done
Ya literally can lol
I never woulda saw that without ur comment! Good eye!
Damn! Good eye there!
Nice cold it’s nice to finally see someone do a cold start without smashing on the gas pedal right after it starts
No gas pedal on that vehicle
Technically it's an accelerator pedal

The way that exhaust tip wiggles at the end. 😂😂
Seriously though, good start!
Frame rate just mismatching the vibrations of the exhaust 😂

Music to my ears. Happy turkey day everyone
my 7.3 would still be cranking

I heard a rumor it’s still cranking..
@@go_dawgs_8290 just checked... it is

Hardest starting 12v I’ve ever seen. Mine will pop off at -20 unplugged very easy. Coming from an Alaskan.
OH YEAH !
On these 12 valve cold start video, almost every one of them seems to have Superman kranking power 😂

Best way to start these old trucks just put your foot to the floor. Turn key on and as soon as it gets about 13 1400 RPM.

This is an old school cold start 😏
The starter motor warmed it up...
Nice tires
Do you know what are preheat plugs ?
POV: me turning my ps4 on
sick, what exact truck is this?
I believe it's a 2nd Gen (around 1998) dodge ram 3500 Cummins turbo diesel
I think the rotary pump 12 valves start better
Russia, Gazelle Next, Foton-Cummins ISF 2.8, my truck starting up like this only in -20°C. What's wrong with your winter, guys?
Sounds like you need to fix the intake heater. My 89 would of start on the first fire
I would hate for this to be my daily
Very healthy
This truck is having trouble passing stool like me
Just relax and take it lightly!
You should check out my cold start on my account rat rod Cummins -5 not plugged in and no grid heater 💨

-1 and its that rough?
I watch my uncle start a 94 12v when it was -40f not plugged in. It crack less than that did when it made the first fire
Just hook your grod heater back up . Burn out the starter
Them tires look thin.
That's what I sound like after taco bell

At least you can get it started a Tesla battery would be dead at -1 lol
a Ford would start right up.
You mean catch on fire
The cummins engine is only indestructible if you treat it right. Next time plug it in
You're not going to try and drive that in winter with bald tires. Are you?
decat?
All american diesel seem to start like crap. My old VW T3 diesel starts in an instant at way below freezing (-15 Cels) when I just show it the keys...
I don't think his grid is working. I have started them at -25f all the time not plugged in.
