  • Lidice Massacre - Brutal Nazi Revenge for Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich - Operation Anthropoid. On 28 December 1941the Czechoslovak paratroopers including Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš landed in the Nazi occupied territory with one objective - to kill Reinhard Heydrich - acting governor of the protectorate and the Nazi architect of the Holocaust.
The assassination, codenamed - Operation Anthropoid -was approved by Edvard Beneš - the president of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. After months of preparations, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš attacked and wounded Heydrich on May 27, 1942. Reinhard Heydrich also called “ the Butcher of Prague “contracted an infection and died 8 days later. The Nazis were desperately looking for the assassins and thousands of people were arrested. Soon after on June 9, 1942 on Hitler’s direct order. occured destruction of the village and execution of its citizens.
In total 340 inhabitants of Lidice were slaughtered - 192 men, 60 women and 88 children.
In the end, some kind of justice was served. On 21 May, 1946 the people’s court sentenced Karl Hermann Frank, the Nazi Minister of State for Bohemia and Moravia, to death by hanging.
Although justice can never bring back the lives of the Lidice victims, it was only after Heydrich’s assassination that the United Kingdom and France agreed to dissolute the Munich agreement and return the annexed Sudetenland back to Czechoslovakia after the Nazis would be defeated.

When I was stationed in Germany, we used to go to Prague all the time and we had the opportunity to go to Lidice, it’s haunting and beautiful.

May the innocent victims of this barbarous massacre of Lidice rest in peace and be remembered and honored. May the perpetrators of this nefarious crime have infamy, reproach, and shame upon their names for all time on this earth.

This is easily one of the most disgusting things the Nazis did during the war. They did the same to other villages in Europe, but this one is different b/c of how proud and open about the atrocities they committed. They didn't even attempt to hide what they did. May God rest the souls of those who were murdered for no other reason than the Nazis had a blood lust for revenge. Those who committed these sickening acts, you were cowards in life murdering innocent civilians, and you are cowards in death. If anyone deserves to burn for all eternity it would be the perpetrators of this act of barbarism.

This and Oradour Sur Glane should both be a lesson and a tribute to the mass killing of the innocents in an otherwise peaceful but insane world- RIP

La intención era borrar el nombre de Lídice y por eso se estableció que en cada país del mundo hubiera un lugar para recordar el nombre de Lídice, busca el tuyo en tu país y verás que es cierto.

Similar events occured in Serbia during that war, but the victims were in thousands, not hundreds. At the same time, nothing like that happened in Croatia, because it was a nazi puppet state with the death camp of Jasenovac, where the Ustashi killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Gypsies and many political prisoners.

Understood. But this not the place to "compare" atrocities & suffering. It takes away from the tragedy of Lidice. Less than 750 people inhabit it today. The legacy of the Nazi occupation of the innocent & peaceful Czech lands.

I always wondered why the doctor refused to give him the antibiotics. Was the High Command secretly looking for a way to get rid of Heydrich?
Can you imagine the children being sold? Most treated like slaves.
