Mainstream media, over the past 5 years, has proven to be completely disconnected with their viewers. Aside from maybe a handful that have actually learned from the 2016 campaign what sticks in people's heads, most keep doing the same old shit they've done for the past 2 decades and wonder why all their viewers are moving to online/alternative sources. It's not even a single party thing. Both liberals and conservatives have moved away from mainstream media to the point where both hardliners of each side call it "fake news".
Now with this virus going on and many different sources, people subscribe to a lot of different sources saying different things about how dangerous it could be and it's affect on the world's economy. Those massive news groups have all on their own created extreme distrust on who the average joe should get their news from. It's obfuscated to the point where it all seems untrustworthy and you should just listen along ideological lines.
I could go on but it's not worth it. It'll come to light what small groups are on top of the media eventually and it will fracture the current global empires. 250 years is the average. Just know that.

People will tell you Barack Obama was the first President elected by the Internet. I'd say that is Donald Trump's distinction. Sure, Obama used the tools of the Internet for his campaigning more effectively than any candidate prior to himself, but Trump's use of the Internet (especially Twitter) rallied his base and gave way for the enthusiasm that people feel for him. For my own little spin, I'd say his appeal to younger people (many too young to vote) was a call to the impact the Internet has had on people's lives. We are now seeing the first generation of people that were born into society that had very easy access to the internet. What happened was people stopped other activities and spent a lot of time indoors and online. It became a lot of watching movies, playing video games, and mindless scrolling through timelines and newsfeeds. People were learning less and becoming less in touch with reality. These fantasies on the screen became reality. Insert Donald Trump. Someone who didn't use big words. Someone they could relate to. Seeing chaos in movies and TV constantly made Donald Trump's notoriously unpolitical strategies seem like he was a character from a film. I'm certainly not saying TV, film, etc are new forms of entertainment, but let's just say it wasn't so easy to spend an entire day binging on shows before streaming services became so normalized in many homes.

I called it too, I saw how much media time the guy was getting and said “Brand recognition and free press, this guy is going to tear into whoever runs across him.” And he did, I wasn’t surprised by how badly the media reacted, but he let them prove his points (debatable if they were good or not but still) and then he used simple language to steamroll anyone else. Hillary by contrast was far too formal compared to Trump and her talking points were ok, but what really sank her was the “Deplorable’s” speech. Not really. It's mostly circumstance. The type of person Donald Trump is, combined with the opponent he faced and her absolutely cringe worthy campaign and past, combined with the type of meme-y humor the younger demographic that would support him was into.
He shaped his experience as a business tycoon into the presidential world, and he blew the competition out of the water. He basically had 5B handed over to him for ads, Hillary couldn't handle that, let alone the fact that of the people that gave their opinion, it is highly likely that the Hillary posse slacktivised (refer to Kony 2012) their way into defeat.

@Toori Baba Bloomberg got a few delegates that he could hand-feed to the Democrat front runner. At that point, there was no clear front-runner but Sanders. Splitting the vote as much as possible and then join all those delegates was what Democrats needed to stop Bernie on his tracks. In the end, it worked. 500 million dollars well spent for him.
