When I was 3 yrs old I drew something and showed it to my mom. Instead of just saying "that's great", she gave me some constructive criticism. After that my drawing ability went to a whole other level because it was like my eyes were opened for the first time--I started seeing things differently. Everyone was impressed with my artistic ability--before I could work, I was able to sell drawings to my classmates lol. All this to say, you don't have to hype your kids up, but don't discourage them either. My mom's approach was to take my stick figures and improve them--she fleshed them out and added clothing...that was all I needed lol.
