  • Can the Sanken CSM-50 replace the legendary Sennheiser MKH-50?
In this video, we compare the Sanken CMS-50 Mid-Side microphone with the legendary Sennheiser MKH-50, first as a dialogue recording microphone using just the condenser capsule of the CMS-50 to compare with the MKH-50, and then also recording a live music performance at an outdoor patio in the Mid-Side configuration to get a better sense of the stereo capability. Other than normalizing, no processing has been done to any of the audio.
Thank you to my friend Juneyt for allowing me to record his performance. To learn more about this incredible musician, please check out his Website: juneyt.com.

As someone who actively shoots primarily Tv-Docu programs (but also a healthy amount of talking head); I often switch between my sanken CS-M1 short shotgun, and my MKH50 (both in cinela susspension). I love the versitility I get in a doc setting with the CS-M1 but have also thought about the CSM50 in its place, but have never been able to try the mic.
Ps. sanken CS-3E is also a great tool but its application is a bit more niche than the prior listed mic's
Unfortunately as recordists I feel like in our diligence to provide options, we can often create headaches for post that expect certain workflows. I feel like for a lot of talking head corp + docu - Post-prod without otherwise specific briefing wouldnt know what to do with a stereo mic in a mix; or would simply ignore the stereo aspect in liue of a quicker turnaround. Or worse yet, post failing to understand what the mic is doing, and incorectly mixing (or not mixing at all) the stereo mic properly and creating a subpar mix.
I feel like in my work enviroment, it would raise a lot of questions that I would have to repentantly answer, and the utlity would very quickly be outweight by hassle.
Would love your thoughts on my sentiment. Also curious about your results in interview scenarios with this setup, I feel I would have rather seen that in the video to get a better sense of the effects rather than the performance. Regardless great short vid!

Hi Evan. Thanks for your great comment. Absolutely the sound team's number one job is recording clean, clear dialog.
Proposing additional options such as M|S or Ambisonic requires a director who has a vision for if, and how it enhances the storytelling, as all things must serve the story.
Experienced post production likes to have options in my experience. But definitely not at the sacrifice of tried-and-true boom + lav for dialog.
I'll post up some interview as soon as it is done.

Worth noting that the CMS-50 benefits from having the HPF switched on in almost all situations. Somewhat counterintuitively the filter results in a significant boost to most of the useful part of the low frequency spectrum (between around 70-300Hz). Without this, the mic's low end rolloff, coupled with its boost between 8-12k leans towards the thin and bright side, especially when compared with the MKH-50 with it's full low end.

Huh, that is a little counterintuitive as high pass usually cuts some of those lower frequencies. I'll have to give that a go. Thanks for the advice!

@@TheUnMarketingGroup yeah, the filter design on the CMS-50 rolls off the mid-channel very steeply at around 60Hz, but gives a gentle boost above the cutoff. It was only pointed out to me after I'd had the mic for a few months. They show it on the published frequency response plots. Quite different to the MKH 50 roll-off switch which is gentle and I believe designed more to compensate for proximity effect. Happy recording!

How does the MKH50 compares to the MKH8050 ?

I'm sorry, but I don't have enough experience with the 8050 to say.

Do we have to get mic at 20Hz-20kHz if we want the best quality? This start at 60Hz
Can I have the mono and MS all record in same time?
Is there a way I can easily attach just one CMS-50 to a small recorder like Zoom F3 to put on top of camcorder to use in daily and CZcams videos?
How does it compare to Zoom M3 mic?
If I attach 2 pencil condenser mic with 90 degree point to sides to a Zoom Fe recorder, it will be MS and the front facing voice will not be clear right?
