We do tend to overdress for all kinds of school functions. But I simply can't imagine going for, let's say, a parent-teacher conference in a tshirt and sweatpants.
I think it has a lot to do with fact that about 30-40 years ago there was heavy pressing to honor Polish symbols (like flags etc), and both are in Polish schools. It's someting my mother and grandma taught me, also dressing to the nines when you out bc your are representing your family. So I also do that, i put better clothes for any additional activities in my kid preschool, to show respect for teacher's work and for place. But i'm aware it's old-fashiom
Gym clothes maybe not but you could have put on a nice pair of shorts, a relaxed linen shirt and a nice pair of light trainers or flip flops. More elegant but still comfy. 😏
You’re almost there, but… absolutely no flip flops 😭 you could wear these perhaps to grab some quick groceries, but other than that… this is swimming-related in Poland i think :D

When parents appear in school teachers try to look neat so parents try to show respect and also look good. All parents want to look good as teachers, other parents jugde them. It's Warsaw so nobody cares even if your're undrdressed.

Myślę, że Polacy stopniowo się luzują pod tym względem, ale jeszcze daleko im do pełnego luzu i kiedy jest jakiekolwiek wydarzenie organizowane przez firmy/instytucje, ludzie uznają, że muszą się pokazać. Często te ciuchy są niewygodne lub za gorące na lato, więc ty możesz czuć się "underdressed", ale wielu będzie ci zazdrościć, że masz luz i jest ci wygodnie. Po prostu nie przejmuj się. Jak ktoś będzie ci dawał "stinking eye" z tego powodu, to raczej nie jest to materiał na kumpla... ;)
w większości krajów twój ubiór byłby całkiem normalny. Krótkie spodenki latem to norma, a szczegolnie na pickniku , ale nie w usztywnianej regułami Polsce.

In fact, regular trousers and you would not be that different, buttoned short and you're there. Gym clothes are named that way to suggest something...

That's weird, I wouldn't say you're underdressed. I wore short cut-up jeans and a t-shirt to my daughter's picnic and looked like mist people 😅
