    Native San Diegan here. Not including the obvious like The SD Zoo and other family parks, or downtown highlights, here is my own list of places to see includes:
    1.Balboa Park. Right near downtown, amazing World's Fair architecture, promenades, Botanical Buildings, performers, fountains, Japanese gardens, arts and crafts, museums...it kind of has it all for couples and families.
    2.La Jolla/Bird Rock. About as fancy as San Diego gets, but still laid back. Walk along the cove and watch the seals. It is called The Jewel of San Diego for a reason
    3.Mission Beach/Pacific Beach. Where the young people party. One of the best beaches in the county. Great surfing and people watching on the boardwalk. Lots of bars. Best place for 4th of July (take an Uber, there will be no parking).
    4.Ocean Beach. The old soul of San Diego. Reminds me most of old-school San Diego. More bohemian. A little more gritty, but tons of character and the best pier in town. Go have some oyster shooters and fish tacos at South Beach Bar & Grill. Doesn't get more SD than that.
    5.Torrey Pines State Park. Probably the prettiest spot for a hike because it is right next to the ocean. The cliffs are surreal looking from below. Amazing little hiking trails that go down to the beach. Quite a workout going up. Afterwards you can grab a really decent burger at the clubhouse restaurant at Torrey Pines Lodge.
    6.Coronado Island. You have to see Coronado if you come to SD. The views across the bay of the city or the peninsula are incredible. The old estates on this island are really something to see. The Hotel Del is a true national landmark. Have a buffet brunch facing the sea. The food is nothing special, but it is worth every penny just being there. Coronado also probably has the best beach in the county. It is huge and has gold flecks in the sand. Very family friendly.
    7.Cabrillo Monument. On a clear day you HAVE to drive up to this historical site. The museum and the lighthouse are interesting, but you really come up for the view of downtown and the bay. It is truly stunning.
    8.Kate Sessions Park/Mt Soledad. The park is my go to spot for setting up an umbrella and having a picnic. The view of Pacific Beach below is panoramic and beautiful. Lots of grass for the kids or dogs to run around on. There are also often free musical acts playing there. Go further up the hill and you will find a war memorial cross on Mt Soledad. While paying your respects you can really get a true 360 degree view of the area.
    Although there is definitely a night life in San Diego, it really is a daytime town. The weather is so awesome you may as well take full advantage of it. Finish your day off by having a Mai Tai at Bali Hai on Shelter Island. More amazing views across the bay and some of the best/strongest drinks in town.

      Botanical Gardens at Balboa Park is shuttered for renovations that never seem to happen. Starlight Theater also totally shuttered, stands in disrepair. And stay off the trails without some company as there is a homeless encampment around every bend

    For me San Diego is the city that offers the very best of SoCal. Somehow everything looks and feels better, brighter, and more pleasurable in San Diego. I absolutely love everything about the city; from the Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo, to the Gaslamp Quarter, to the shopping scene, to the incomparable La Jolla, to the magnificent beaches, to Coronado, and everything in between. San Diego is a magical place that makes you feel great about being alive and celebrating life.

      Liberty Public Market is a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening. The food is great there but there is other great food around the place. Con Pane makes great fresh bread. Slater's 50/50 makes burgers to die for and has over 100 beers on tap. Stone Brewery has a location. There is several nice parks with playgrounds for children. Corvette Diner if you want to have a 50's diner experience, it is a San Diego institution. They even have an upscale movie theater, complete with restaurant, bar and at seat service during the movie. I could go on and on.

    Great recap - I'm born and raised in SD. A little-known fun fact of Coronado beach is the sand dunes near the sidewalk north of the Hotel Del are shaped to spell out Coronado. The dunes were going to spell out Coronado Beach but they only did the B of beach. Do a Google aerial search to see it.

    let me suggest you some restaurants in San Diego:
    - Authentic Hawaiian Poke (Hawaiian Grindz) at "it's raw poke shop" on Newport Ave (Ocean Beach).
    (I go to Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui regularly, this one is up there with them) and the owner is from Mililani in Oahu.
    - $5.00 All you can eat Tacos on every Tuesday (with a purchase of a drink) at the "American Junkie" on 5th Ave (Gaslamp).
    - great cheap tacos with housemate tortillas at "Micho's" (inside the bar called Atomic) on 5th Ave (Gaslamp).
    - great cheap tacos at "Tacos Mimi" on Cass st (Pacific Beach). cheap and good, make sure you order side of fries too.
    - "Dos Brasas" on San Diego Ave (Old Town), try their Menudo (tripe soup) and lots of things.

    Good video. I would have added that if you just walk a few blocks out of gaslamp you can get great food for more reasonable prices. Places around Market and 9th or further into east village for example. Also shout out to petco park which is a very nice baseball stadium, and the padres are lousy so great tickets for $25 are easy to find. Also, Hodad's is better than In n out :)

    I took a bus from the airport to a trolley station downtown. It was slow but otherwise okay. Best part is you can buy and load a Compass transit card in the airport and use it on all the buses and trolleys. The trolley line that takes you to the border is pretty great, it's SO much faster to go through customs on foot than waiting in the enormous line for automobiles.

  • @filipbinek5757
    @filipbinek5757 Před 3 lety

    When you mentioned getting around in and from the airport. I would like to add that there is a shuttle bus from the airport that takes you near the Middletown trolley station. From there you can take the trolley to downtown, old town, mission valley, etc. Another option is the bus which will take you right to downtown.

    Masterful presentation of a superficial slice of San Diego. I would add a couple of strong toppings to the slice. Chris, maybe you and your viewers are too la dee da to be caught dead riding a bus, but I really like the bus service in San Diego, and it's cheap. There is good bus service from the airport to downtown, and I always take the bus to Coronado and other areas. Of course busses may expose tourists to a side of San Diego that isn't so pretty, but if one wants to experience the socially authentic and challenged part of San Diego -- and why not? -- take the bus. Mingle with the working people. Once I was taking the bus from Coronado to San Diego to go to the baseball game, and one bus passenger led the packed bus in singing Take Me Out To The Ball Game. It started slow, but he got all of us singing. I've also heard great open conversations on the bus, like the man who talked about his marriage and said he'd been married 23 years and said, "Oh we're just starting." How beautiful. Get your asses on the busses people for some shots of reality. For another topping, try the cigar lounges, they are awesome. Also, check Yelp for great pizza and Mexican food.

    • @YellowProductions
      @YellowProductions  Před 5 lety +2

      Hah! I'm glad you had a good experience on the bus! It just doesn't really go the routes that I seem to want to go... but I'm glad to hear you had a positive experience on it! And yes... this is absolutely the "tourist" slice of San Diego.

    • @L.Spencer
      @L.Spencer Před 5 lety
