  • Behind the "Farewell Slavianka" (by win081, 11.2013)
The music was composed in 1912 by Vasily Ivanovish Agapkin who was inspired by the Serbian mothers who sending their loved ones to fight the First Balkan War against the Ottoman Turks (slavjan.org.rs/?p=963). Vasily Agapkin was a trumpet-major in the marching band of the 7th Cavalry Regiment in Tambov, he was also invoved with the class of brass insruments in the Tambov Music School.
It was Yakov Bogorad, a music publisher in Simferopol, who came up with the name "Farewell Slavianka" when he published the scores in 1912. The march was first performed by the marching band of the 7th Cavalry Regiment (where Vasily Agapkin was with) in the autumn of 1912. The first gramophone record was released by Ekstrafon Kiev in the summer of 1915 and it immediately gained wide popularity in Russia and adjoining countries.
Since then different lyrics have been created for the different occasions, such as volunteer march song for the student battalion ("You have acces and nurtured ..."), Siberian People's Army march song, the march song of Kolchak White Army, ... Lyrics were also created in different languages such as in the Polish ("Rozszumiały się wierzby płaczące") during WWII, the Finnish ("Свободная Россия", "Рейо Франк"), the Jewish ("בין גבולות"), ...
The most well-known version probably still is the one at the time for the First Balkan War against the Ottoman Turks:
"Arise, Russia Fatherland, defend your Faith, ... Russian Holiness is waiting for victory, Take action Orthodox men, ... Rise your battle flag for Faith, Love and Righteousness".
This lyric was not just promoting the patriotism, it was also defending the faith of Orthodox Christianity against the Ottoman Islam.
After the WWII the Red Army Choir had a version with the deep pride of the victory of the Great Patriotic War ("..., They defended Moscow in '41, They marched in Berlin in '45, ...") and it has been always performed by the military band when they are leaving the Red Square at the end of the military parade in former Soviet and in Russia today.
The lyric of this video is written by Vladimir Lazarev in 1984 and it has gained the popularity since the Soviet dissolved in 1991 because of the slower tempo and the added human fragility factor ("Farewell, fatherland, remember us, ... ... not all of us will come back. ...").

This is the best version of lyrics in my humble opinion. This is the true face of war which we should remember. I have the most respect for ordinary Russians. They did not pretend to fight for a moral cause that doesn't exist; they fought for their love of motherland and family, nothing more nothing less. And they fought bravely, and sacrificed greatly. True bravery is not fearlessness, but to be able to overcome fear and fight, against all odds, for something larger than life. Could Britain, France and the US commit an additional 28m lives against Hitler? The Western countries, as well as the Soviet regime, took the credit that belongs to the Russian people. I don't understandd why so many western people hate Russians. Have they ever tried to understand them and appreciate the art and technology that they brought us? We do not need another world war, economic or otherwise. NATO should learn to be brave and admit, apologise for, and stop their constant aggression against Russia. They are the ones responsible for de-escalating the situation. Putin is a reasonable and patriotic president. I do not agree with him on every subject but I support him for defending Russia.

I think that each year there are less people who hate Russia and more people understand and are respectfull for the Russian and Slavs Moral values, i hope Russian people live in freedom and peace and then we will see what are they able to do. The best scientist, came from russia all the time, they have a high standard of moral values, really many people all over the world wish the best for them. includ here in Uruguay South America.

      @0hn0haha Před 9 lety +14

Same! Most Russians don't agree with Putin on everything either, he is after all, human; but Russians appreciate his policy. No one can be perfect, that is obvious. Putin is just another Russian! That's why Russians like him; he's one of them; he'd rather tell you "pshol von" (go to hell) than fight, but is also plenty tough and straightforward. And that's the way it's always been. A strong leader, respected and loved by the people, truly leading the people, but for the people. And sometimes, Russian people will get pissed at Putin.
It's so much more logical, in my mind, than our modern systems, which have no strong leaders, not in Congress or in the Presidency. All we have is bickering punks, and God knows if what they want is for America to get better. Goodness, can't we get some patriots in Congress? Not conservatives or liberals, but just people who have studied the issues affecting the US, and can present viable solutions.
All we have at the moment is two parties presenting ideologies, and arguing which ideology is better. I want them to present solutions. I want them to be intelligent, smart. I want facts. Our Congress doesn't seem to research anything anymore; they just vote on emotion. Quit voting for emotionally charged fanatics! Vote for the calmest candidate you can find.
Ever note how calm Putin is? He somehow manages it even when stern. Geopolitics, and domestic politics, are no place for wild emotion; they are supposed to be the realm of wisdom.

The most famous singers in America usually stick to specific genres - rock, hip-hop, country and western, etc, and sing nothing patriotic (with very few exceptions) except The National Anthem at sporting events. American patriotic music as a genre does not exist. But then again, 27,000,000 Americans didn't die in the Second World War and we haven't had to fight for survival like Russia has over the last 100 years. Yes, I consider myself to be a patriotic American but I also have great admiration for Russia and the Russian people. А я учус говорить по русский

Farewell of Slavianka is a Russian patriotic march, written by the composer Vasily Agapkin in honour of the Slavic women accompanying their husbands in the First Balkan War.The march was written and premiered in Tambov in the end of 1912. In summer of 1915 it was released as a gramophone single in Kiev. Slavyanka means "Slavic woman".The melody gained popularity in Russia and adjoining countries during World War I, when the Russian soldiers left their homes accompanied by this music. This march was performed also during parade of 7 November 1941 on the Red Square, after which soldiers went straight to fight in Battle of Moscow. This march was also used as an unofficial anthem of Admiral Kolchak's White Army

Unfortunately in english there is just one variat of word "russian", in russian language we have two versions: "russkiy" - ethnic nationality and "rossiyanin" - sitizen of Russia. so of course, there is a russian type of mind and life, but please , donn't mix these two words, there is a nationality - russians< and there are many other nations with russian type of mind, and they are " russians" too, but we shouldn't forget about our nation, becouse russians "russkiye" is not just abstractive word describing the people with the common menthality, - russians, first of all it's a concret european slavic nation, and we have to remember it! )

It's not a proshchai, it's only an "au-revoir." We will never forget you, soldiers, flyers, tankman, and snipers of Stalingrad, the 900 days of Leningrad, Khursk, the Bagration Offensive... The Kuban peninsula... Ce n'est qu'un au-revoir. We will never forget you. You have won in spite of stalin and the NKVD, you have prevailed against the swastika.

RemekMM I meant to say NAZI-ism. I'm a creative writer (and poet at times). We writers have the defect of loving to use symbolic allusions. You're right about the swastika (or svastika). I'm told it was supposed to be a solar symbol. I believe it was helena blavastsky (the creator of the theosophic movement) that made this symbol known to Germany and the rest of the West. She had gained knowledge of it on her alleged trips to TIBET. Many people in the known seem to agree that these voyages were more a product of her imagination. At any rate, the Germans began it us it as a "good luck charm" in the WWI trenches. NAZI occultism did the rest. Thank you Remek!

    • @PhilippeRR1

johann sebastian bach I'm not a fan of the VERSAILLE treaty at all, and DO agree with John Maynard KEYNES when he warned against the consequences of "making GERMANY pay." Let's not forget pre-WWI history, however. As early as the 1850's the Germans were beginning to make their Faustian bargain with the devil in order to gain absolute power, and live the absolutely demented dream of the "master race." The fuhrer did not invent anything. He merely borrowed from the litanies of the likes of Guido Von List. They opened the door to satanic destruction long before August 1914. The devil entered through that opened door at the most propitious time: that of despair that you so well describe. Let us not forget, however, that they for the larger part called that time of despair upon themselves, and fell right into the mephisto's trap. The new GERMANY seems to have learned, and has emerged a most prosperous nation thanks to this learning (and the Marshal Plan).
