When you realize the Gnome breach via the wheel is really just a clever mechanism to flush out your opponents trolls it's much better... first play wasn't sure if triggering a breach was a good or bad thing but it's definitely a good thing
Oh this is an excellent game, it was 8 for me than 9 and now it is 9.5, I love it with every fiber of my being. I have to agree with steap learning curve and hard teach, everything else clicks right after few rounds. After like 5 plays the only negative currently we have spotted is that you have to be somewhat invested in every strategy otherwise it is really hard to not being targeted if you are ahead, because it is easy to mess with other people scores, but maybe for not so mean groups like mine this could be easy 10
I love this game! Thanks for reviewing. I have found it hard to teach as well. Thankfully after 5 or so plays I don't need to reference the rules as much to make sure I'm completing each step correctly. This helps with new players as I can answer all questions and run the breaches and invasions clearly and with brevity. I never felt is was mean thanks to no direct conflict but getting champions can be mean as you wait to influence them until others have spent their influence so you can steal one away or just guarantee you get one.
The designers missed the opportunity to call this Con Troll...
I played my copy for the first time this week. Great feedback from the dicetower crew. I want to share one of my personal grievances that hasn't been mentioned. I find the little round discs for the clan-tracks difficult to handle as you need to stack them sometimes. As a result we had an accidental bump and tumble of a stack, and disagreement what the order was of them.
But the game itself, area-control with special powers, is great!
Demoed this at pax with burnt Island and loved it. Glad I picked it up
I agree with Tom. This is one of my favorite games of the year.
After some plays this is currently sitting at a 10 for me!!!! The things people have issues with like the troll wheel and swarm token actually make this game soooooooooo good.. the added depth, timing and strategy in each move is HUGE! Love it
I demoed this at PAX. Was pretty fun, and would definitely like to play a full game!
I agree with Mike, the upgraded gnomes are pretty terrible for gameplay, even if they look great. But I disagree with him about solo. Fall of the Mountain King Solo is like a 2 or 3 at best. The solo removes literally everything good about the game proper, and it is really clear that it was thrown together at the last minute against their will.
Like the little influence from the planning boards in Smartphone Inc for that ancestry mechanism

Yeah I agree with Tom this game is great started as 8.5 but only trending up.. more control the more you play
I agree that the gnome movement is so annoying even after a few games of it. The game itself is so much fun though and we love the powers and ancestry track.
Really like this game and so glad I got the deluxe edition.
This was a 9 for me, this was excellent. Yeah it can be clunky, but once you understand it, and it didn't take long, this was amazing fun
I'm honestly getting sick of companies not mentioning solo on the box. I didn't back this Kickstarter because it said 2-4 players.

I was very disappointed in the Hall of the Mountain King. The way they allow you to generate resources is silly.
This game looks like it is designed better.

Wow! I’m really surprised you all liked this game as much as you did. I’ve played it twice, and after the second play it immediately went into the “sale” pile. I thought he fiddliness was off the charts! This game just screams Kickstarter and is so rough around the edges. Sometimes there were symbols. Sometimes there were words. Sometimes the symbols didn’t match, but did the same thing. Combat works different if it’s a troll invasion at the end of a round versus caused by the tripwire, etc. the keywords are so fragile as well. You had to know a dominated zone versus a controlled zone versus a present zone versus an overrun zone versus a contested zone versus a free zone…. 🤮 Fall of the Mountain King needed some more play testing and streamlining. The Ancestry boards was the best part of the game by far! But not enough to keep me coming back. 👎
What are some of your favorite games?
@@mrmaybe79 some of my favorites are: War of the Ring, Eclipse Second Dawn, Blood Rage, TI4, Glen More II, Terraforming Mars, etc. So complex games or area control games don’t scare me off. Fall of the Mountain King was just a total miss for me.
@@jcatterwaul I’m sure it’s totally me! Just wanted to give a differing perspective since the reviews gave very high praise and I had almost the exact opposite experience. Where the DT crew was able to overlook some of the nuance and rulebook sloppiness, I didn’t think it was worth the effort. I honestly don’t think anyone will still be talking about or playing this game by this time next year. On the plus side, maybe this review will make someone want to buy this dumpster fire of a game from me 😁

I am very much the opposite of Tom on this one point: I can't deal with trolls being the "good guys" and gnomes being the villains. I am fully indoctrinated in the anti-troll pro-gnome propaganda I was exposed to growing up with The Hobbit, the Kingdom of the Gnomes tv show, etc.
Now, if they introduced a Secret Traitor module in which one of the players was working for the gnomes, I would be beyond on board. Of course, it wouldn't be much of a secret at that point. But still, free expansion idea here publishers.

Hmmm, I never thought of it that way and he does not go last every time. I agree with one of the other commenters that he probably wants to not unduly influence the scores of the others or at least appear that way (they seem to all have strong personalities and don’t seem to be swayed one way or the other). I also look at it as if he is allowing the others to go before him and he is going last to give them their turn first and allow them to speak. If he always went first you may have the same reaction because then he would essentially take all of the good points first.
