I only started listening to Steeleye span around 1997 when my first girlfriend raided her dads record / cd collection and she gave me a lend of the "stack of steeleye span" cd. i was about 18 at the time and though being Irish and familiar to Irish folk and trad music Steeleye span were the first English folk music i had ever heard and i fell deeply in love with the sound .
Of course through Steeleye span i was then opened up to the wide range of scottish , welsh , cornish and french folk elements that they would tap into. I was and still am a big metal /rock fan so i absolutley loved the rocky elements and arrangements that they infused with the folk sound . total pioneers , unreal musicianship , raw talent backed by an otherworldly spirit .
i cant put into words the dreamy and nostalgic feeling i have when i think back to those wonderful summer days of my youth when we first discovered this band and their magical music .
even though i was about 25 years late to the party i loved and still love this music and i carry on having dreamy days along the way with Steeleye span as my lifes soundtrack as it will be for many others and many generations to come.
Thank you Steeleye span for all that you have done.
A very happy belated 50th anniversary!
Best wishes from Tipperary - Ireland!
Recall going into record shops just to listen to “Alison Gross”.
Been a fan since the beginning. Great to hear Alison Gross brought up to date without ruining the essence of the song. Brilliant!!
Recently bought the DVD.
I highly recommend this. The sound quality is excellent. As for Alison Gross, its great that they have kept the spirit of the original, whilst adding more instruments and more oomph.
I love the way this album allows the various band members to showcase their particular talents as well as being part of the band
Folk-rock at its very best
Indeed they are 👏🏻😊
More specifically Celtic Rock
Perfect harmonies as good as on Cd
Fantastic
So good😊❤
Wow, this version is totally amazing. Only heard the album version before and I think this is even better. Watched/listened to it at least 10 times in a row now. Totally love it
I recall bouy Parcel of Rogues when the LP first came out in my student days.
This live version is pretty good & Violeta a worthy successor to the great Peter Knight.
AMAZING HISTORY AND STILL A MAJOR TALENT- I LOVE YOU ALL!
Apart from Maddy and Liam, everyone has been replaced. Drummers are easier, however Maddy has always been the heart and soul of the band. Fade into legend after Maddy is the best option.
Never seen a live performance of this one - fantastic. The only thing I miss from the original recording is Maddy soaring high above on the second line of the chorus. Wonderful.
I miss Tim and Maddy together.
Magnifique
They sound so great! This song really has life into it.
Splendid performance!!!!
Never heard this before.like it.maddie still on the go fair play to her. Fiddler gorgeous. SHES IRISH
Went to the Cannock performance and saw them perform it there. Spoke with Maddy & got Violetta to sign cd. Great band
Great tune. Im addicted
Love that song!
Brilliant !
Absolutely brilliant xxx
Amazing!
I remember the picture of Alison Gross on the vinyl cover !!! LOL!!!
I knew a girl named Alison gross in high school.she ran with the crowd that would be into steeleye span. Kids would tease her by singing this song to her.she wasn't ugly. They weren't trying to be mean.
even better than the original..
I know it's along time ago but the female just sounded better because it's a woman on a woman song ? amazing all your albums have been to me for talented people .I would love to meet . great song and band
Who is in this line up? I love it!!!
2:36 Maddy Prior vocals
2:28 Andrew Sinclair guitar
0:34 Benji Kirkpatrick vocals guitar
1:08 Liam Genockey drums
0:10 Jessie May Smart violin
1:24 Roger Carey guitar
0:15 Julian Littman vocals bass
The 1970s theme to Granada Reports!
Anyone know where this was recorded ?
50th Anniversary? The woman on the violin is never over 50!
What is that guitar that Spud is playing? Best regards. 🙃
Who's in the band at this point?
I really miss Peter Knight but I am starting to get used to Jessie who's probably the next generation of the band.
Jessie and her stand-in Violetta are both brilliant violinists who "fit" the mood of the band perfectly
Jessie is without a doubt spot on for the band
Maddy too low in the mix. Her level needs to come up - especially in the choruses.
Eh???? Maddy Prior needs to raise her level?
@@ZacharySlatts Needs to be louder. The volume level of Maddy in the mix.
Hence 'Maddy too low in the mix' - i. e. the volume level for Maddy has not been put high enough.
@@pattymoth9471 My apologies, i misunderstood
@@ZacharySlatts Thanks Carl - definitely not a criticism of Maddy! Far from it. The reverse in fact. We should be hearing more of her in this mix (and perhaps in general!) is what i meant : )
Maggies harmony is far too low in the mix sadly
I got better...
Beautiful music, ugly sentiment. Alison invited him to a tryst; he came-then, in her own bower, told her to go far away from him. After such a misogynistic speech, he deserved exactly what he asked for.
😂😂😂 she's a witch for a start! She doesn't get her way so she turns him into a worm, sounds like a lovely woman! 😂😂😂
All's fair in love and war.
@@loriabrams3048 we'll have to disagree on that one....
I consider it a happy ending in that respect.
