Some time ago there was a discussion in which suggestions were solicited for a good survival knife.
I suggested the Gerber Prodigy or the Gerber LMF2. Questions were asked regarding what exactly you could do with them since they had serrations. I hope to answer those questions here.
Stay tuned to the end for my "public service announcement"! If you have a weak stomach you might want to skip it.

I heard Wal-Mart wasn't going to restock these knives so I went out over a month period and I bought 3 of them! I carry one, got another one strapped on my prep bag and one saved in my safe for my daughter when she grows up! This is a good knife, especially for a backup blade!

I baught 1 last week and put it thrugh hell n back. I liked it so much I baught another one and out it up for the real survival shtf.
I made shelter figure 4 deadfall traps a couple spring snares and a bow n drill for friction fires and put it on a long staff for spear hunting. And tossed it in trees. It never failed me and kept a good edge. I haven't tried sharpening it yet though. Mine doesn't have a ceriated blade thou I like the straight edge. For the money I don't think I had a better knife. Anyway thanks for sharing and God bless and hello from Kentucky land between the lakes. 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇬🇧

I don’t see a dime worth of difference between the Strongarm and LMF? Same cheap steel 420/440C Gerber claims Sanvik on their Amazing product description. I doubt it is Sanvik. But at WallyWord its under $50. There doesn’t seem to be $20 difference between this knife and the Strongarm. And $60 difference between the LMF other than the Government makes the LMF more expensive because Gerber has to make it their functional specs!

It stayed sharp thrugh my tests and I dulled it on purpose by cutting bricks just to see how it would sharpen up. By my surprise it took a little work and I got a razor sharp edge and I mean razor sharp LOL. I was so impressed I baught a 2nd one that I won't abuse. Thanks for sharing and God bless 🇺🇸

The 420HC that Gerber uses is really something special. I know people cringe when they think of 420HC but the heat treat Gerber uses, along with any other techniques really produces a great knife. I bought a Prodigy awhile back not expecting to much and man, what a razor sharp durable blade. I highly recommend it!

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27  Před 9 lety

Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors I own a ESSE 5 and a Blackbird SK-5 so I mean I'm not a noob to the knife world or anything. I know my steel, but I also realize that just because it's 420HC does not mean its a bad knife. I've seen companies use 154cm and make a crap knife because the heat treatment was a joke. Gerber's American Knives are not to be underestimated IMHO. P.S That new Gerber StrongArm is going in one of my kits. Looks like a great Tactical/Survival blade for my pack.

I know this video is a few years old but since I have a Prodigy (2) also I like see how others like it and use it. I got both serrated and fine edges. I have done some mods to the sheath to make it more of a survival knife. FAK, I always keep a few band aids in my wallet, they don't take up much room or weigh anything. At least it will help with bleeding and keep it cleaner. I also keep a needle for splinters and a nail file. Great Video!

Say Heah, I was very surprised you made feathers with a serrated blade, Because of you, I pulled my Benchmade 156 CSK in D2 out of the box and started using it this weekend, The first order of business was to see if I coukd make feathers with it, You made me a Believer, And I just found a new knife I had for a long while now, But before watching these videos, I feel like I found a new knife and it was already paid for, What a find, Actually I like the looks much better than my CarbonV S. R. K. and I would always say why couldn't the S. R. K. have metal bolster and pommel like my 156, Today I'm elated to no end I made that mistake when I was ordering it, You had to pick either plain edge or Serrations, I must of not be paying attention because I recieved tge serrated one and I was bummed. But it all worked out in the end and years later the knife is still brand new and I feel like a gift fell into my lap. Thanx Blue Mountain.

+paulie 4x I think a lot of folks dismiss serrations without ever trying them. Benchmade and Gerber both do good serrations and there is very little you can't do with them. For a survival knife I still stick with my serrated Gerbers, though I'd substitute for a Benchmade.

Hey Mike I just bought my Prodigy today and boy this one came sharp like dangerously sharp. The hardest part is getting used to making feathers with a straight downward motion, my muscle memory keeps wanting to tilt the blade angle. I was really surprised by the weight this knife is very light but not in a bad way I'm just used to my overweight Schrades;) Anyways thank-you for such great reviews I love this knife and can't wait to really give it good camp out.

Funny,I know this is old but I went from using a Schrade SCHF56LM with micarta handles to the Gerber Prodigy and was pleasantly surprised by the difference weight between the 2..the Prodigy is overall around an inch longer than the SCHF56LM and is noticeably lighter...I was recently considering getting an ESEE 4 but the reviews were quite disappointing for the price tag..now Im considering buying a TOPS knife eventually but until I can talk myself into paying $150 or more for a knife,I will gladly use the Prodigy

I personally do not like field knives that are serrated, it is how i was raised and how i was trained i see no reason to change, my skill set is based around plain edged knives.
In the video you show that the Prodigy is every bit as capable as a plain edge knife of similar size. I have used a borrowed Prodigy afew times and it feels good in my hand has good weight and balance sharpens easy enough, but those serration just leave me cold.
I do like Gerber knives alot and i find it beyond belief that they do not offer a plain version of the LMFII or the Prodigy. How many thousands of people have asked for the plain versions ? the like it or lump it attitude has surely cost them many customers myself included.
Thank you for your well made and skillfully made video in production and content, take care and God Bless you and your family.

Thank you very much for the compliments! And also for taking the time to watch. I appreciate that.
Like I had said before to someone else, I'm not trying to sell a knife or "convert" anyone. I have just heard so many times that you can't do a variety of tasks with a serrated knife and I wanted to set the record straight. Not everyone likes these kinds of knives. Whatever you are happy with I'm good with that. If it works for you run with it! I have several plain edge knives that I like quite a bit. Actually, the the list of plain edge knives that I like is much longer than the serrated knives.
Gerber just released a new model called the Strongarm. It's a Prodigy with a bit of a different grip and an improved sheath. It is offered with both serrations or a plain edge! You might want to take a look at it.

I totally agree I have owned hunting knives since I was #? Don’t remember not having knife or I carved them out of wood or old fishing poles for a challenge. They never had big hunting knives like Tarzan had in the movies. So we made them. I was poor and would never try to ruin my knives this way. Once you broke a tip using it as a pry bar? You were never that stupid again. Axes, Saws & Hammers have their place. Using a knife for splitting wood for a fire? I would never even think of it. If these knives aren’t good for fine carving, food preparation or SD. Forget it if they fail a balance test or handles break off. That was the problem in old days riveted handles made of wood, bone, antler of leather.
Plastic would never have been good enough for knife handle. As for a fire striker that is so moronic I loose my mind watching that silly bull S! I use a US made (Three Flint Striker) for Welder Acetylene Torch. Don’t buy Chinese Sh^t at HD! Go to Welder Supply ask for a US one! You will wonder why you have a ferrite rod!

Before I would never want a blade w/ serrations for wood processing. Mainly due to the fact the BG knife w/ serrations, when batoning the serrations get damaged. However after owning the Strongarm and learning how tuff Gerber's 420HC is, Im going to purchase another Strongarm but with the serrations. I tested the serrations on my BG knife making feathers and wow, it was easy, made very fine curls. I like Gerber's serrations, but definitely prefer their US 420HC over their Chinease stuff.

Ya know, if you're going to use knives and collect knives, you're going to get cut. I've been cut many times, and pretty much every other knife collector I know has been cut. It's better not to be cut, and it's good to know first aid, but it's just going to happen. (and no need to feel foolish when it does happen, the only people who don't get cut, are those who don't use knives)

Hey brother I see that you have really thined out that belly up to the tip, what edge angle do ya think you have on yours now?
I took mine out camping and accidently went through a branch and hit a big ole boulder hidden in the moss....UGH I had to sharpen a small part of the edge away right by the serrations but luckily it missed the teeth. Boy it took me a long while to fix it, I can officially confirm that their heat treatment is spot on and tough as nails but boulders are knife kryptonite. Anyways it fixed up way nice but after watching your video again tonight I see that yours is way more aggressive.....I like that esp for carving notches.
