Lmao
I wondered what that was! 😄
I love this knife. I extensively tested it and it held up extremely well. I think Gerbers 420HC is brilliant survival knife steel. Dulls quicker than your other stainless steels, but it is tough. I hammered mine into a tree and stood on it and the tip held true. The 9cr19mov Bear Grylls ultimate tip snapped straight off in the outer bark. Video on my channel called 'Testing gerber fixed blades' if anyones keen on seeing it for themselves.
CedricAda Gear and Outdoors I just use a ladder ;-
Survival On Purpose Haha, fair enough!
I think I found another mounting option. If you remove all bits from the sheath and slip the it inside the waistband of your trousers with the smooth side towards you. The molle "gaps" in the back grip the sheath to your waistband and giving you a nice concealed carry.
It is not orange :-) has no serrations and a cool sheath...Thumbs up for Gerber!! Cool review Brian.
Mario Knife Making I agree. Although I kind of like orange ;-)
Survival On Purpose You know what i referred to...
I do. I have a one year update coming soon on mine.
Mario Knife Making idk why everyone hates on orange. Handles. Is it the Bear Grills thing? Outside of being actively hunted by other human beings (or if you’re hunting and you carry your knife exposed to the world I guess) high visibility colors are probably the best for gear you’d like to keep, and find again when you lose it.
I've got the prodigy plain edge
great review. your curious "assistant" was a great addition to the video.
+879doogie hmmmm
Hey Brian! Great review on the Strongarm; a knife that I was looking to add to my work knife arsenal.
I always appreciate your being the "How does it work Guy" in your videos without having to necessarily be the "Tear up Guy", and your "ramblings" are as much a part of what make your opinions thought provoking and yet still entertaining. Stay with your style!
Stay tuned for an updated Strongarm video soon.
Great video! It was cool to see it next to the prodigy.
Thanks Aaron. I think I like it better than the Prodigy.
I see this an old review, but I just got a prodigy at WM and I’m shocked and awed in all the right ways. No complaints at this price.
jon louis Yes the Plainedge versions do you perform rather well!
I have been running the Prodigy for a while and i have no complaints. Thanks for the review.
running?
@@peterzebot9863 using, yeah
This is the quality content that CZcams needs.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Thanks for such a comprehensive review...After watching this I went and purchased a Strongarm from my local army disposal store.Great knife and I couldn't be more happy with the build. So good to see such a quality coming out of the USA !!! As a slaughterman/boner it would of been interesting to see it in use on a carcass.Fantastic work.!!! Thank you.
It is a solid knife and a great value
I'm curious what you think about cold steel outdoorsman
I just bought one of these for my get home bag. Glad all of the tests so far are showing this knife to be a real value.
So far it is.
as always good job keep it up
I have a StrongArm and used it to take apart two couches, a 3 seater & a 2 seater......chopped them down with ease & took quite a bit of punishment without any failure at all..... very impressed & good value knife!!!
I bought throughout your Amazon channel to support a great individual like you Bryan. Nice video. Don't forget your salsa music 😂
+Carlos Sepulveda I really appreciate it.
solid review! just purchased one through your amazon link
+Eric Lam Thanks! You're gonna like it.
got this knife yesterday, was gonna sell it, but i fell in love with it,,did some carving and made a fire with it , it came razor sharp, gorgeous feather sticks, made 3 fires with it, loving it...creates awesome sparks.
Nigel Naicker Cool. I like this knife myself.
Nice review Brian. I am glad to see that Gerber is trying to get it's act together. If I did not already have my general purpose knives, I would be a player for one of those. Thx for showing us and all you do.
It is nice to see the gauntlet working well, Chris had a real good idea with this.
Jerry
Yes he did. And based on the feedback we got at Blade show there should be some cool stuff hitting the Gauntlet soon.
Cool...glad to hear it is going well and having a positive effect.
I recently received my Strongarm. It came shaving sharp! Very pleased with it. I watched all the gauntlet reviews on it plus others. I have to say, its one tough knife for sure. What surprises me is how tuff that 420HC is, Gerber must have their heat treat right! Definitely makes a great outdoor utility blade imo.
I completely agree.
Excellent video....expecting my StrongArm any day now. Thanks for the great vid :o)

Cool review, guy! subscribed.
+rocknrollzombie Thanks
I just bought a prodigy yesterday came with the sheath and all and it's an awesome knife ! great video !
+Outdoorslayer 90 Cool. I I still need to do a detailed review of mine. Hey, you should do a videos. Seriously, I don;t know why you took the others down. Come on man, show us some of that Marine Corp stuff.
Very good video, thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching.
My Gerber prodigy isn't ceriated. But anyway I put it thrugh hell n back. Making fire shelter snares and traps and solor stills and digging. It was still sharp when it was all over. In fact I liked it so much I baught another one and keep it in my survival kit in truck. Thanks for sharing and God bless. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 🇨🇦
Nice review. Hits all the marks for me, plus made in the USA. Got to get one.
It's a great knife
I've got a fine edged prodigy, although i had to talk the guy behind the counter into trading the serrated one from the box for the fine edge version in the display case.
+Theradbrad202 good job
Dude, you have no idea what kind of silly crap I had to go threw to get my hands on a Prodigy. I tried to get another one because I wanted a backup in case anything happened to the first one. It took me several trips to Walmart. I explained that it was on the website at $40, then it was "out of stock" and only available in stores, and only they carried the model. I finally found a manager who offered me the display, (which they don't sell as policy) but with no sheath. And some woman was making remarks to him about it maybe being thrown out, but nobody went to check in the back or whatever. I said, 5% without a sheath wasn't worth it and left.
I checked back to see what became of the knife sand sheath. A clerk told me that he had put the boxes on a shelf and I should tell the manager to check there.
I went back again and they found the box with the sheath, but offered me no discount. Not really fair, but they're out of production. Yesterday I went to a farther store for a special deal which they would not give me. At the bottom of the glass case I saw a Coyote Tan Prodigy with serrations. Behind it I found one with the fine edge, brand new and fresh looking in a clam shell package.
I am beginning to hate retail stores.
MasterK9Trainer you probably wasted more in gas and your time than if you’d have just taken the first one once they finally found the sheath
I've got a plain edge prodigy also with a greenish handle. I like serations tho
Sarahratted, lmao. The way he says serrated 😂😂 the prodigy fine edge is only sold at Walmart supposedly untill they run out
Thanks for the honest answer. I manage to ruin the blade on a wet stone first . Then luckily for me i went to house of knifes where they restore the blade and made it sharper then original . I notice that this type thick blade is better left to the professional if you want good results.
Practice makes perfect
nice throwing review!!! thank you very much
Thanks for watching.
I have the strongarm. Very pleased with it. Great all round knife.
RowdyRoddy Yeah, I wish I had waited when I bought my Prodigy now.
Nice video and throw too! 👍🏽😎
+Renegade Outdoor Survival thanks
As usual a great review Brian! Taylor makes some fine acoustic gi-tars. I think the skunk nicked up the blade! :-)
I got to visit the Taylor factory in San Diego last year. It was pretty cool.
Survival On Purpose That's cool!
great knife I am getting it this weekend
+Josh Techgamer Yes it is
Amazing Brian
Thanks Danny
Don't know if you will see this comment but thought I would let ya know, Gerber is making the Prodigy with a straight edge now.
I just seen a video the other day and thought it was one of those China copy's, but nope the guy bought it from Walmart and yep Gerber's finally woke up.
Now all we need is for them to give the LMF 2 a straight edge cause imho if they remodeled the handle weakness it would sale like crazy.
I think the handle "weakness" on the LMF is actually a feature.
Survival On Purpose the handle weakness is a safety feature so that the handle is insulated according to blue mountain bushcraft.
If you check, the fine edge Prodigy is out of production. If you want on or a second one, run to any Walmart you pass and buy whatever they have in stock because they are not available anywhere.
I guess I'm old at 51 I like the way you test a knife I don't buy knives to destroy them I want to know how it performs please don't change I like how you do things and will buy a strong arm and would have been fooled by the faker in my view and have bought most of the knives after I watch what you think of it your intelligent and a little crazy just like I hope to be one day and your honesty won me over
You guys putting this knife to some test. I guess you wanna get proof that Gerber still can do nice blades or maybe it soner or later will fail:)..have not seen a ESEE been shipping around like this, haha. Anyway good video and finaly we have an Gerber with no serrations:)
You know I have always liked Gerber Magnus. And who knows. Maybe we. An get ESEE to play ball. I know a lot of other manufacturers like the idea of the Gauntlet.
Another great review, Bryan. This is probably their best offering to date as a wilderness survival knife. Is The steel going to be it's weak point? The gauntlet is a valider concept even with The edge re worked. It is unfortunate that Gerber provide their knife with a shappeness less then perfect. Will keep a tab on this gauntlet. Thanks for The review.
Lt Survival Thanks Louis.
I just got the prodigy a few days ago...new Armstrong.....of the two which do you like. For camping & survival...
Interesting review. It was started out as a Strongarm vs Prodigy review, and it didn’t take long until the Prodigy disappeared and it became a Strongarm review. I was hoping for a comparison.
They are almost the same knife. I saw no reason to bore the viewers doing the same things with both. That's why I just showed the differences. I had to send the Strongarm on down the line, so I demonstrated it.
There was a guy bashing the strongarm cause the tip, under microscopic view, wasnt perfectly symetrical. Come on right. I had a strongarm for years & it never failed me in any way. I dont care if it is microscopically perfect, but oh well i guess... "some people" ...Well thanks for your video Brian!
Can anybody tell me if the prodigy will fit in the Strongarm sheath? I picked up a fine edge prodigy the other night, and I really want to know if I could put it into a Strongarm sheath.
Thanks for the review, I have a esse 5 and I'm looking for something smaller, lighter for camp chores and possibly EDC scout carry!!
I think the Strongarm or Prodigy are both excellent knives for the money.
Survival On Purpose I've watched numerous videos in the gauntlet ya'll did on this knife and I'm going to try to find one. The smooth blade version is unavailable on Amazon, I live about 20 minutes from Smoky Mountain Knife Works so I will call them tomorrow and hopefully pick one up in couple weeks. Thanks again for your videos and honesty!
zeke1eod go to walmart and get a prodigy in the fine edge. 50 bucks
Price match to Walmart dot com, it's on sale for 40!
Love your little buddy there!
Good review can always count on you for a good review. I don't like beating on my knifes either just to the point where you know what the knife can do. Oh I see that nick it may have been a small rock on the wood when it was sitting on the ground, who knows. Tks
Thanks
That knife is looking nice and I just purchased their Freeman Guide Folder knife which seem to be a great knife. I wanted a folding knife to have as a backup in my backpack, and it seem to be real nice.
I like Gerber stuff. Mostly anyway
Good review. I have both the prodigy & the strongarm. The strongarm is the basic version but the prodigy is the walmart exclusive with the fine edge. On some forums people have stated that the fine edge prodigy is not a walmart exclusive, they are wrong, it is only available at walmart in this configuration. Even the gerber online catalog does not list this. The walmart prodigy is now discontinued so check your local walmart to see if they have one, I was lucky to get the last one in the case at my local store. Both are well made, made in the usa, and a bargain for the price.
Cool
It’s called non destructive testing and i agree with you and again the throwing is great 👍🏻
Thanks for the support!
Which is better in your opinion, this gerber or the schrade schf42d?
Great video I prefer the strong arm owning that one
I think I do too.
Thanks for the informative videos. Is that a Shih Tzu you have there?
Between the lmf and strongarm which do you feel is a better built knife? I really like the lmf but I am hesitant about it after reading various issues of the handle coming loose and I saw it on a video
I prefer the Strongarm but the LMF is bigger and designed to have an electrical disconnect between the butt and the handle if you need that.
I have the Prodigy fine edge (FE) model and love it as Im not a big fan of a serrated edge. Didnt know it existed until I picked up the wrong box thinking it was the usual serrated Prodigy and got it home and unboxed it. I was so excited to see it!!.. lol
I didn't either. Cool
I have seen and held the coyote tan handled fine edge and I loved the handle. It also has the ceramic coat of the Strongarm.
That's for the video. Quick question are the sheaths interchangeable? Because they are such similar knives can you run a prodigy in a strong-arm sheath?
Good question. I don't know.
I would like to know this as well?
Bought one And subscribed to your channel.
I think back in late 80s early 90s 420 hc was a top line knife steel
Really like your opinion on this Gauntlet Review
Thanks.
I have the Gerber Prodigy and have no regrets.
Great review Bryan! You already know how I feel about the "balance test" so I won't go there, but I'm willing to bet the nick/roll in the edge probably came from the knife hitting the ground after the bangers you threw during the outtake reels. I really wish Gerber would come out with a plain edge Prodigy! I know they released a limited edition version exclusively through Wal-Mart (which I think was the dumbest idea in the world) however, I hate shopping at Walmart and disagree with their business practices and how they treat their employees so I refuse to purchase the knife through Walmart. Furthermore, after writing to Gerber inquiring as to why they don't make a plain edge version of the prodigy widely available, I merely received a lousy "dear John" email in return. In the end, although I believe the Strongarm is a winner, I'm really disappointed with Gerber lately and left with much to be desired. I often feel as though they care more about advertising than producing quality products and listening to their customers. JMHO
+Dan Schwemin Jr I think they may just be suffering from big company challenges.
I have been explaining that the fine edge was available before anyone ever reviewed it or even mentioned it. I just found out that my local Walmart has one in stock which I might go get. The thing that bugs me is that I have to pay more now when Walmart as selling them for $40 online not too long ago. I don't understand how Gerber could create such a weird situation. Barely out for a year, no samples sent to reviewers, no videos made about it, and then the only way to get one is through Walmart brick and mortar stores only. Despite all that, it's a nice knife and with the ceramic coat of the Strongarm, it's basically equal to it in quality and I prefer the Prodigy style handle.
I love these shows on the gauntlet, gerber has upgraded to a newer version with bdz-1 steel, but they only made 2,000 in production, supposedly holds edge retention longer an stays sharper longer,it's a little more fore it,but affordable still, thought I'd share that with you, I love both versions of the strong arm.
It’s a good knife
What is the angle to sharpen the blade? Do you know what field sharpener can be used on this blade and on the prodigy.
Best Regards
Alex
I have no idea about the angle. And I'd say whatever field sharpener you normally use
I just bought the new version of the prodigy, looks like only the sheath changed. But sounds like a lot of people think this bald 420HC is garbage...I paid $45 with free shipping, idk feels good in my hands but time will tell
Bought a Prodigy fine edge, not a bad knife at all. Pretty tough knife so far.
Nice comparison Bryan.
Thanks.
also love the shirt im a Gibson les Paul kinda guy but taylor makes some awesome acoustics though
I used to have a Les Paul studio and for some unremembered reason I sold it. It was a great guitar. Heavy but great.
Nice review
Thanks.
Hi does either knife fit either sheath? Wondering bc I’m trying to have a sheath made for my Prodigy
Yes. They fit both sheaths.
Thanks for the good review Bryan. I like it but the price for 420hc bothers me a bit.
05generic It doesn't bother me. I think it is a decent price for a US made knife
Okay so I read thru the comments. As far as reprofile goes, the first time I run a blade thru my worksharp, it is now the same edge as all my other blades. I'm not one to say there's something bad about that. It is a fact that we all sharpen our edges different to some degree. That doesn't take away from the way the steel performs and shouldn't be a big deal. Anyway, that said, what grind does it come with? Nice review, btw and actually the first I've watched on this knife 8-)
I'm agree with you on the edge work. I think since the edge is pretty much the one part of the knife that is subject to so much user modification it isn't a big deal if it has been "re-profiled". And I am not sure what the factory edge is but I doubt anything Aaron did would change the basic grind geometry. Probably just the secondary, final edge geometry.
Thoroughly great review my friend. I can't stand seeing these guys battoning the crap out of things for the sake of watching it break, bending on knives until they crack or snap, and generally just get dumb with their gear. NOBODY in their right mind would do this stuff to their gear unless they were in fact that dumb. Either way, great vid. Here's a sub for ya!
+c allen thanks !
great video ! answered lots O questions lol
+Outdoorslayer 90 Thanks
What dropped on the knife at about the 1:10 mark? Was it a bird bomb?
Thanks for the review.
Not sure. I'll have to look again. Probably ashes. I had a smoky fire going to ward off the mosquitos.
I agree with your philosophy on testing the knives, I don't care about watching people break them, I want to see how well it holds up to what I will use it for in the field. Thanks
+buster Rhimes I just know I could probably break anything if I tried and that really proved nothing.
I got a Thermacell and it does well with bitey bugs here in the North of Sweden.
I have the Gerber prodigy and question. I love the sheath except for the bulkiness. I took the screws out and now I have that strap at the end is there anyway to get around that? I mean when I'm carrying it around. I'm not a knife expert by any means but I feel like it could be carried better I'll explain in depth if your still its a 3 yr old.vid lol
Cut it off?
@@SurvivalOnPurpose lol well yeah but I didn't wanna ruin. I ended up putting it back on but is this a good knife to scout carry thanks for reply even though it made me feel retarded hah
i have no issues with feathering. i think if you hold it with the thumb on top of the blade gives you better stability while your feathering as opposed to having your full hand on the handle only. strongman is a great knife! i love it!
I agree
I haven't been a GERBER fan since the 80's. But after getting the Strongarm I can see GERBER has stepped up their game. My stock Strongarm is outstanding and very versatile. It hasn't disappointed me yet. I have dozens of quality fixed blade knives to choose from but the Strongarm always seems to find it's way on to my belt when headed into the woodlands. Light and with different carry options I really like this knife and it performs camp tasks with no problems.
Jeff Sherrod I am going to have to get one of my own to play around with long term. I bought a Prodigy just before the Strongarm came out and now I'm wishing I had waited.
Gerber made quality knives up to and through the 80's until the latter part of the decade. Then quality control and their knife design's began going down hill. In the last several years I'm glad to say their design's and quality have much improved. I plan on adding more Gerber's to my collection. And BTW 440 steel properly heat treated is pretty good blade steel. People my age got along just fine before the advent of the "Super Steels".
Love my gerber strongarm.
+Eric McNeil It is a good knife
Thanks Brian for a very informative review and like you I have never been a fan of reviewers who test their knives to destruction. I just find it pointlessly wasteful.
Me too
Just a question: is a serrated knife per definition not suited for bushcraft?
+MaverickIQ I don't know about definitions. Some hate them and yet Magnus Andersson is a master with his serrated Gerber.
Serrated means it has a saw like "blade* near the base of the knife.
MaverickIQ it's not suited for anything, really besides taking an inch an a half off of your cutting edge it's also good for making what would have been a Nick on your finger a sawed crude nasty cut ;)
And the coyote color version is indeed a fine edge black is only available in serrated
I was curious if you are going to review the Gerber Coyote Tan fine edge and maybe compare all the Gerbers (Prodigy, LMF2, Strongarm, and Bear Grylls) with and without serrations. I'm curious if they plan to discontinue any of them. I am baffled as to why the new Prodigy and the Strongarm are selling for the same price give or take 2-3 dollars.
That would be a good video but I don't have all those knives.
morning, Bryan; Nuther great test-review, Had not heard of this 1 will sheck-out the other-s review on this as well a lil side note Lil-Sniffer came 2 C where Stinky went, 2 cute. Thanks 4 sharing this with us Friend.
Happy Trails From The Maritimes In Canada ATB Terry
God Bless
T.W. Milburn Thanks Terry. Yeah, the pup is my youngest sons and they are both pretty cute to me.
do you feel that this knife would be alright for my 11 & 13 year old sons? I want them to have a camp knife that is full tang and has a good sheath. I was thinking of Mora but I'd rather them have a full tang knife . what are your recommendations on a good camp knife for these age groups. Love and appreciate the channel! God bless!!
I would be a great knife for anybody. I agree about the full tang, even though Moras are great knives. Here's another excellent choice in my opinion czcams.com/video/EEKaqcbTrSs/video.html
Thank you for your time and knowledge!
Seen lots of hate for 420. From what I've seen so far, just HOW much edge retention do people need! I think it's a no rust fishing and woods tool. I don't know how you youtube reviewers do it, between the guys that want a broke knife, pretty knife, and the ol' just use an ax guys. I'm a thankful sub for what ya'll do.
Michael StJohn I appreciate it Michael.
Notice how smooth it was when he took it out of the sheath and threw it onto the stump😂😂
Butter smooth
Recently got one of these..
But even more recently have bought a spring assisted folder that looks like a strong arm..
It says BUCK on the blade..
But the handle is.... (Apart from the plastic) almost identical to the strong arm..
It seems like a good knife as far as folders go..
But I havent been able to find any reveiws on it
what was with the skunk in the background after the stump top review?
What skunk?
on the pile of wood looked like a stuffed animal.
he always works it in in every video lol
i own both of these knifes, each has its own use but when im out and in the bush and for my daily carry it is the strongarm ive moded it a bit over the last year and a half but its my go to knife for everything great solid knife almost unbreakable to boot i love it best knife gerber has ever produced period
I think it is a great knife for sure
Barnabas Jones will the prodigy fit in the strongarm Sheath?
You also don't want to be the "smoke in your eyes" guy. LOL thanks for highlighting he delta between Prodigy and Strongarm. You actually helped me decide towards the Prodigy. Was looking for a smaller knife for my TT chest rig - the Prodigy will serve perfectly so thanks!
What type of 550 bracelet is that? You have a watch on that? I'd really like to know what you go going on there! Thanks!!
+Robert Salmon They are both solid knives.
Hey Brian where can i find a sheath for rhe prodigy
I tryed everywhere
Balance-testing is essential!😁
I agree. That's why I invested so much into my state of the art testing facility.
i have one (strongarm)... is good, but not the best...
i have a prodigy tanto also and i like more then strongarm... i modified the sheath of gerber ultimate survival and use it for strongarm (is really cool)...
respect for you, mister Brian
That sounds like a cool idea.
good comparing review . i though it a 1095 ...
Hey I got a question. will the strongarm fit the prodigy shealth?
+Richard Lambert I don't know. I no longer have one to check. If I get one I'll let you know.
OK thanks. I have a prodigy and honestly it would not be in the drawer if it was plain edge and I am debating the strongarm v the Schrade schf42 for my new camp knife and I really like the rubberized sheath on the Prodigy so if it will fit that's another check in the strongarm box.
Cool 😎
I was going to be highly disappointed if you didn't balance test this knife!
I'm looking forward to my turn with it.
You're gonna like it.
The gerber prodigy and the gerber lmf shealth are very similar. I Have both knives I'm not a fan of serrated blades but if shtf I would gladly carry them.
Both are good blades in my opinion
Skunk was a nice touch
Skunk? What skunk?
That appears to be a very functional knife. It almost looks like a diver's knife. I wouldn't mind own one for sure.
+Joe Sanders They are both good knives.
Is the prodigy full tang?
Does the Tanto Prodigy fit into the Strongarm sheath
I don't know
