    I love this knife. I extensively tested it and it held up extremely well. I think Gerbers 420HC is brilliant survival knife steel. Dulls quicker than your other stainless steels, but it is tough. I hammered mine into a tree and stood on it and the tip held true. The 9cr19mov Bear Grylls ultimate tip snapped straight off in the outer bark. Video on my channel called 'Testing gerber fixed blades' if anyones keen on seeing it for themselves.

    I think I found another mounting option. If you remove all bits from the sheath and slip the it inside the waistband of your trousers with the smooth side towards you. The molle "gaps" in the back grip the sheath to your waistband and giving you a nice concealed carry.

      Mario Knife Making idk why everyone hates on orange. Handles. Is it the Bear Grills thing? Outside of being actively hunted by other human beings (or if you’re hunting and you carry your knife exposed to the world I guess) high visibility colors are probably the best for gear you’d like to keep, and find again when you lose it.

What surprises me is how tuff that 420HC is, Gerber must have their heat treat right! Definitely makes a great outdoor utility blade imo.

      Dude, you have no idea what kind of silly crap I had to go threw to get my hands on a Prodigy. I tried to get another one because I wanted a backup in case anything happened to the first one. It took me several trips to Walmart. I explained that it was on the website at $40, then it was "out of stock" and only available in stores, and only they carried the model. I finally found a manager who offered me the display, (which they don't sell as policy) but with no sheath. And some woman was making remarks to him about it maybe being thrown out, but nobody went to check in the back or whatever. I said, 5% without a sheath wasn't worth it and left.
      I checked back to see what became of the knife sand sheath. A clerk told me that he had put the boxes on a shelf and I should tell the manager to check there.
      I went back again and they found the box with the sheath, but offered me no discount. Not really fair, but they're out of production. Yesterday I went to a farther store for a special deal which they would not give me. At the bottom of the glass case I saw a Coyote Tan Prodigy with serrations. Behind it I found one with the fine edge, brand new and fresh looking in a clam shell package.
      I am beginning to hate retail stores.

    Don't know if you will see this comment but thought I would let ya know, Gerber is making the Prodigy with a straight edge now.
    I just seen a video the other day and thought it was one of those China copy's, but nope the guy bought it from Walmart and yep Gerber's finally woke up.
    Now all we need is for them to give the LMF 2 a straight edge cause imho if they remodeled the handle weakness it would sale like crazy.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  Před 7 lety +3

      I think the handle "weakness" on the LMF is actually a feature.

    • @Wildwestwrangler

    Another great review, Bryan. This is probably their best offering to date as a wilderness survival knife. Is The steel going to be it's weak point? The gauntlet is a valider concept even with The edge re worked. It is unfortunate that Gerber provide their knife with a shappeness less then perfect. Will keep a tab on this gauntlet. Thanks for The review.

    Good review. I have both the prodigy & the strongarm. The strongarm is the basic version but the prodigy is the walmart exclusive with the fine edge. On some forums people have stated that the fine edge prodigy is not a walmart exclusive, they are wrong, it is only available at walmart in this configuration. Even the gerber online catalog does not list this. The walmart prodigy is now discontinued so check your local walmart to see if they have one, I was lucky to get the last one in the case at my local store. Both are well made, made in the usa, and a bargain for the price.

    Great review Bryan! You already know how I feel about the "balance test" so I won't go there, but I'm willing to bet the nick/roll in the edge probably came from the knife hitting the ground after the bangers you threw during the outtake reels. I really wish Gerber would come out with a plain edge Prodigy! I know they released a limited edition version exclusively through Wal-Mart (which I think was the dumbest idea in the world) however, I hate shopping at Walmart and disagree with their business practices and how they treat their employees so I refuse to purchase the knife through Walmart. Furthermore, after writing to Gerber inquiring as to why they don't make a plain edge version of the prodigy widely available, I merely received a lousy "dear John" email in return. In the end, although I believe the Strongarm is a winner, I'm really disappointed with Gerber lately and left with much to be desired. I often feel as though they care more about advertising than producing quality products and listening to their customers. JMHO

      I have been explaining that the fine edge was available before anyone ever reviewed it or even mentioned it. I just found out that my local Walmart has one in stock which I might go get. The thing that bugs me is that I have to pay more now when Walmart as selling them for $40 online not too long ago. I don't understand how Gerber could create such a weird situation. Barely out for a year, no samples sent to reviewers, no videos made about it, and then the only way to get one is through Walmart brick and mortar stores only. Despite all that, it's a nice knife and with the ceramic coat of the Strongarm, it's basically equal to it in quality and I prefer the Prodigy style handle.

    Okay so I read thru the comments. As far as reprofile goes, the first time I run a blade thru my worksharp, it is now the same edge as all my other blades. I'm not one to say there's something bad about that. It is a fact that we all sharpen our edges different to some degree. That doesn't take away from the way the steel performs and shouldn't be a big deal. Anyway, that said, what grind does it come with? Nice review, btw and actually the first I've watched on this knife 8-)

      @SurvivalOnPurpose  Před 9 lety

      I'm agree with you on the edge work. I think since the edge is pretty much the one part of the knife that is subject to so much user modification it isn't a big deal if it has been "re-profiled". And I am not sure what the factory edge is but I doubt anything Aaron did would change the basic grind geometry. Probably just the secondary, final edge geometry.

    Thoroughly great review my friend. I can't stand seeing these guys battoning the crap out of things for the sake of watching it break, bending on knives until they crack or snap, and generally just get dumb with their gear. NOBODY in their right mind would do this stuff to their gear unless they were in fact that dumb. Either way, great vid. Here's a sub for ya!

I mean when I'm carrying it around. I'm not a knife expert by any means but I feel like it could be carried better I'll explain in depth if your still its a 3 yr old.vid lol

    i have no issues with feathering. i think if you hold it with the thumb on top of the blade gives you better stability while your feathering as opposed to having your full hand on the handle only. strongman is a great knife! i love it!

    I haven't been a GERBER fan since the 80's. But after getting the Strongarm I can see GERBER has stepped up their game. My stock Strongarm is outstanding and very versatile. It hasn't disappointed me yet. I have dozens of quality fixed blade knives to choose from but the Strongarm always seems to find it's way on to my belt when headed into the woodlands. Light and with different carry options I really like this knife and it performs camp tasks with no problems.

      Jeff Sherrod I am going to have to get one of my own to play around with long term. I bought a Prodigy just before the Strongarm came out and now I'm wishing I had waited.

    • @Sherrodja
      @Sherrodja Před 9 lety

      Gerber made quality knives up to and through the 80's until the latter part of the decade. Then quality control and their knife design's began going down hill. In the last several years I'm glad to say their design's and quality have much improved. I plan on adding more Gerber's to my collection. And BTW 440 steel properly heat treated is pretty good blade steel. People my age got along just fine before the advent of the "Super Steels".

      MaverickIQ it's not suited for anything, really besides taking an inch an a half off of your cutting edge it's also good for making what would have been a Nick on your finger a sawed crude nasty cut ;)

    I was curious if you are going to review the Gerber Coyote Tan fine edge and maybe compare all the Gerbers (Prodigy, LMF2, Strongarm, and Bear Grylls) with and without serrations. I'm curious if they plan to discontinue any of them. I am baffled as to why the new Prodigy and the Strongarm are selling for the same price give or take 2-3 dollars.
