- Do Performance Air Filters Give More Horse Power for Motorcycles/Motorbikes? [MT-07 & FZ-07]
Air Filter: amzn.to/2pM2i9v
In this video I went the trouble of going online and purchasing the most expensive air filter I could get (DNA). This video walks you through the steps of installing, tuning and experiencing the abilities that an air filter could give a potential rider.

I've expected a dyno because 'whoooaa' is not a standard measurement
😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey man, great vid - honestly they're getting better and better, congrats!
Just wanted to say that, yes, a high flow intake will increase peak HP slightly, but generally it won't increase torque across the the whole rev range. What's happening is you're making it easier for your engine to breath in. As you go up the rev range, the amount of time the intake ports are open gets shorter and shorter. To some extent the piston moving down faster offsets some of that by pulling harder on the air, and the speed you're going has more of an air ram effect, but basically as the revs get higher and higher, your engine starts to struggle to breathe - why the torque curve tapers off towards the end usually. Engines are designed to run in a certain rev range, with certain characteristics, so they're all a little different, but generally overall that's the case. Because you've made it easier to breath, you're increasing torque at the rev ranges where the old filter was a limiting factor, and because you're increasing torque, you're also increasing HP. However, You're only increasing torque at those rev ranges where the old filter was holding the engine back - typically the mid-high RPM's. That's because at those low RPM's, the engine had enough or more than enough time to get enough or more than enough air in already, so making that process easier doesn't often have a noticeable effect.
TL;DR: Generally high flow intake mods will not have much effect on the low RPM's, but will boost mid and high RPM's. I suspect that's why when you just gradually roll on the power whilst riding normally you didn't really notice the difference too much, but when you did a clutch up wheelie, it was far more obvious (because the engine was already at a higher RPM).
Just remember to increase your oil/oil filter change frequency as slightly more dust and particles will get through a high flow filter :)
Dude u said the wheel came up so easily like a 💯 times 😂😂😂😂😂This proves that the Filter did it's job 👍
I guess you’re right I’ll have to do some more riding. It will be cool to ride a stock fz 07 and see how they compare ;)
@@TURBOTWINKIE yeah it's a great idea 👍
Mr. envy kole hope you’re not being serious 😂
Maybe you just get more torque out of it, i plan to get and exhaust and those wire but not thinking ill give up that much coin for a filter if it dosen't improve my 0-60
To get a true reading on HP you should’ve dino tested with the original filter then dino tested with the new one that’ll tell you how much of an increase in HP
Unfortunately here at Turbo Twinkie headquarters we don’t have the budget or the time to dyno motorcycles. Maybe in the future
i would think it would increase the horse power but who cares if you cant feel the difference
well u have to count that the faster u go the better is flowing into airbox..
What kind of feedback would a dino give on this?
Dyno*
Even if it is a myth or not, it sure does make the bike much more responsive and it feels more crisp. To me, the OEM filters always make it feel like as if it's gasping for air compared to the aftermarket. It makes a difference and is worth it. Also you say about cost, but this one all you do is clean and lube and save from having to buy new. Aside from probably the savings from filters will probably never offset but the better response is worth it for me.
Definitely not a myth, it's just not a miracle cure lol. It will usually increase torque at the mid and upper RPM's. Of course on modern bikes to get the best out of it you have to remap it, and very few people buying a slip on exhaust and a $30 air filter will do that. As you say, it makes the bike more responsive at those mid RPM's, which is exactly where you usually want it to be responsive on the road. Manufacturer filters definitely hold them back. They're having to limit noise, emissions, etc to conform to stricter and stricter rules, and filters and mappings are one of the cheaper ways to fine tune that.
A power comparison video with no dyno is like measuring top speed without a spedometer.....1/4 mile times without a clock......voltage without a voltmeter....
0:09 I knew there was someone else with a sense of humor!!! love your content!!! And your accent.
5:42 .... your reaction says it all mate .... for sure it makes a difference!! On my MT07 I fitted a Black Widow exhaust then had the ECU tuned with adaptive self learning software .. it felt great afterwards, a massive improvement on stock fuelling and throttle response .. then about a month later I fitted the DNA air filter (currently still with the stock lid) and got the same result you did - a noticeable increase in mid range torque :)
I think one thing no one talks about is induction noise. If you are sick of your FZ-07 sounding like an angry singer sewing machine, just take the snorkel out of the intake and it adds such a wonderful rich noise to the acceleration. I recommend anyone doing this.
Absolutely it does. More airflow more power. My 2019 MT09 increased in power from 5000 rpms upward with reduced vibration. Prior to changing airfilters the vibration would make my throttle hand numb. After installing The K&N high flow filter...no more numbness.
Really thinking on buying this as well...i have the same 2019 mt07 with full akrapovic on it...just not sure if dna or k&n is better...i will probably also dyno tune it after
I'm from the future and I'm here to tell you that your video quality is bomb!
It's just MORE airflow... That's it. If you install a full system exhaust it helps if you don't have a tune.
First 8 seconds of the video: I died laughing!!! Man you make amazing content and you are underrated! Keep up the great work!
Thank You!
I just purchased a MT09 new. Installed a K&N high flow filter. 10to 15mph faster. My bike takes off at @5000rpms
dna its a Greek company you should know it except from the olive oil and feta cheese we have and high performance filters
Και γιατί να το ξέρει ρε μπρο
You also make high end knock detectors like the plex system. I bought a twin sensor one for tuning my LSA, great product.
Yes they do. Sprint filters, specifically. More surface area, more filtration, more precise filtration. Beats DNA outright. Finer particle filtering and MORE flow? How is that so? SCIENCE MY MAN. Filters are essentially a grid of bars criss-crossing, creating gaps large enough for air flow and small enough to stop pollutants. Trouble is, those "bars" in most filters are very imprecise, random, and don't promote laminar air movement. Enter Sprint filters. No messy oils, no nasty cheap wood fibers, no cotton fibers fraying and degrading.
That said, a filter is only 1 component in a total performance system. Yes it's critical, but getting the ECU flashed and de-restricted is the only way to arrive. I've got dyno sheets from a reputable tuner for the FZ/MT-07 that shows the difference. 6-7 more HP and 6-7 more ft-lb in the mid-range, factoring the 9 pounds loss in exhaust bulk. Yeah it's faster. That's not even touching on the removing of gear-based restrictions, timing restrictions, secondary throttlebody flies restrictions, high rpm retardation, throttle response issues, and more, all solved with a quality ECU flash.
Stock 67 hp. Tuned 71 hp.
Stock 46 ft-lb. Tuned 51 ft-lb.
Peak numbers, but the fat mid-range gains are even greater.
I'm not sure Sprint has an airbox lid replacement for the bike, like DNA does. Better filtration, but the airbox design is a restrictive piece.
Bought the K&N filter combo which came with the oil filter can't wait to put it on the bike.
Any new air filter, especially a high airflow filter will help a bike that had an old air filter with leaves in it. You said it though...to take advantage of more airflow, you need to add more fuel. More air + more fuel (calibrated to an AFR of 12.7 to 13.3) = bigger bang in the cylinder. A bigger bang in the cylinder = more power. Of course the other advantage of these performance filters is that most are designed to be washed and re-used many times saving money over the not-so-long time frame, some say the lifetime of your bike. According to many motorcycle "experts" the K&N filters are the best...me, I know nothing...as Sargent Schultz used to say.
When I had the factory filter in 4th gear I could get 60 mph on the hwy comfortably. When I installed the high flow filter I was getting 75 mph in 4th. And, I noticed my MT09 would run smoother in the higher rpms
try relocated the air filter which is outside the engine bay to allow to suck in cold air, i can bet with you it will increase more horse power
The wheel coming up faster is a likely a sign of an increase in torque, most likely low-end torque. But a 100% true test would have to be done on a dyno.
I believe it worths the investment.. especially if you keep the bike for years and put an aftermarket more open exhaust.
I always put "performance" air cleaners on my bikes but it has nothing to do with getting more performance and has everything to do with saving money because they are reusable
Hey what's up man, I noticed you haven't added this video or you're ECU flash video to your playlist. Just giving you a heads up! great vid man!
Oh true, thanks! Will do
@@TURBOTWINKIE No problem! Btw If you dont already have the next mod video planned out yet , I'd like to see you do the R6 throttle tube install for one of your next ones , keep up the great videos !
Yup, already installed it, just need to find some time to start editing the video and shooting the b-roll :)
Awesome! looking forward to watching the vid!
My MT07 climbs up the RPMs so much slower than this. Not sure why. After full exhaust and ECU flash my power went down if anything.
What exhaust did you put on
@@aggelostzinis704 akrapovic.
Peformance Airfilters do work, but they only do so with Tuning and only really perform as expected with a higher flowing exhaust. This is a proven science, not a myth or anything about question.
People take 81HP M8 Engines and bring them up to 94~97HP with intake, pipes, and tune alone. And break 100HP+ with cams added into the mix.
The problem with all this stuff is people do swaps to air fliters and never tune them, happens all the fucking time with cars, because people dont want to spend the 1000~3000$ price tag of a retune on a pro dyno. So ofc they never gain any HP out of it.
Pipes, Air Filter, and Tuner, it all has to happen together for any of this stuff to really work out well.
some country is not legal to change the pipe and peoples don't want to get fine
usually anything less than 10-15% change in power is not actually noticeable. it might sound different, give you a different experience, and it MAY even be faster, but you will not actually notice it.
How did you flash the ecu? Link to what I need to do it please
shouldn't technically the ecu know its getting more air and sort its self out ?
Was wondering about this. It’s pricey and would def require me to get a dyno tune/reflash
Oh forgot to say that this isn’t the most expensive airfilter/intake for the fz07. Look into powerhord fz07 intake. Also look into the airflow charts in fz07 message boards. They found more “proper” airflow with the snorkel vs taking the snorkel out or cutting the bottom part of the snorkel. The turbulence was bad without the snorkel causing less airflow to the intake
i remove the airbox and connect the k and n air filter directly to the carp, and tune for more fuel, at haft throttle it increase 35km per hour from 90, stock to 125 k&n, however that willie already show the increase of horse power, if bike got no power it very hard to willie, try a 50cc bike see you can willie, i can bet with you it will not wille
Dude! I did the same thing but with the stock filter! Found and got the 3D printed filter lid and slightly modified the stock filter edges so they are a bit more rounded and the air flows better into it. Long story and will make a vid about it one day.
But I have only changed my exhaust, and when I did this to my filter, OMG it was like a totally different bike!
Way more bottom end power!
And to add to this, I don't have any computer flashes or ECU mods to the bike at all!
This is my next thing, but just soooooo expensive!
I'm on a mission to mod the bike, but as cheap as possible!
Hey, why not try the stock filter vs that DNA filter and see if you can feel much of a difference with just the 3D lid or home made bracket?
That would be good to see!
Stay safe dude! Love your vids!
Thank you for the comment! I’ll put that video idea on my list :)
Hello, I would also like to create support in 3D but I can not find the dimensions. I saw that you had to model them, is it possible to have the dimensions or the file of modelization?
More air + more fuel = mo powaah babe
Dna air filter vs kan air filter?
Eo I really gotta reflash or anything computer related? Sfv650 with cat but Pipe. Stock everythang.
Definitely! My 4th gear went from 55 mph to 73 mph @ 6000rpm
That's not how that works
Ok if you did no tune and added the filter you may have gained 5 hp ok with that said you add the tune you gained more but with out seeing the numbers? By the way if you change the air filter with out doing a tune you probably would hear popping also should do an exhaust for the trifecta.
Maybe it's more a difference from ECU flash than air filter ?
did you gain anything concerning the top end speed of the bike with those mods?
Hi, does the air filter high perf. need to re-tune your bike ? or does it worth those 100 of dollars ?
Wow love this videooo! Are you ride with a db killer in the vid ?
No dB killer, really loud, even with earplugs
@@TURBOTWINKIE nice mann
@@TURBOTWINKIE why you didn't bought the titanium one ? Akra exhaust.
MC flyer I like the look way more and it’s cheaper. People say that the titanium is too quite With dB killer and too loud without dB killer . But the thing you should consider that I didn’t consider, is if you lay down the bike on the right side the exhaust will most likely get damaged because it sticks out quite a bit while titanium sits under the frame
You should test on stock ECU, and then remap, to see if you can feeeeeeel the difference
then it will become too rich and lose power
Performance air filters are a waste of money. I used one on my car and my mileage dropped 5mpg. I put the original back and will watch the mileage again.
What sort of phone mount do you have fitted to your bike?
Great review. Thanks
What tool is that you used to remove the tank cover?
I rebuilt my 125cc to 150 and did get a lot of problems with air/fuel mix. I ended up with a Performance filter and bigger main jet. Now it seems like the motor is running smoother. Also the color on the sparkplug is getting close to the desired color. I do, however, thing I need a new exhaust pipe for better flow. I will at least try. Anyone tried same rebuilt? Your experience with it? I feel low and midrange power is better so I guess I m very close!
Mate you could have tested 0-100 figures back to back, since acceleration is related to power.
so not out of a performance point of view out of a saving $$$ point of view. i have a car that i own for the last 22 years. i installed a K&N performance filter in her not for performance she has a 6 cylinder 4L motor. But for saving money. the oem filter costs half of what the K&N cost me. So after 2 services with the K&N i have made up my money. It did nothing for the performance it just saved me money in the long run.
Yep, important point.
Which map do you use?
I have twobrothers s1r full exhaust and a DNA filter. I cant find a map with this specifications, help.
Just use another map that matches the closest to your setup. The akrapovic and DNA air filter map should work fine. Don't be scared to experiment with different ones :)
I think you would ha me to put the bike on a dyno to see the numbers !
Hello, I watched your video on the MT 07 with the DNA air filter. I would also like to create support in 3D but I can not find the dimensions. I saw that you had to model them, is it possible to have the dimensions or the file of modelization?

@@TURBOTWINKIE won't this one melt on a very hot day?
I'm sure you have to do some miles before and after 5000 rpm you will notice something like that anyway I think lol
thats a HOLY SHIT is well worth the $100
Hey, how much of a difference does the windscreen help on the high way?
Makes no difference. Its just for looks, although if I lay my head on the gas tank then I can avoid the wind :)
@@TURBOTWINKIE Yea that's what I thought, really love your bike though :) I recently got myself a 2018 MT-07, absolutely love it, I still need to do the frame sliders and exhaust, and a tune, but honestly what's keeping me from it is the price of the exhaust and tune kit holy moly, I looked up the kit you got, is it really worth it if I just wanna tune it once or do you think it would be cheaper to get it done at a shop ?
What Brand and model is your back seat bag?
Nelson Rigg 1060s, check out the touring video I did, we talked about the bag
If you're not sure it made a difference, it's because it didn't make a difference
changing air filter will increase fuel consumption?
More air needs more fuel, on cruise speed it won't be huge difference, but if you crack open often you will definitely see increase in fuel consumption
@@RidingWithGerdas after i change the air filter without airbox and do some tuning at 20% throttle it go 90kph at stock at 50% throttle it go 90kph, what i mean you use less throttle for the same speed more throttle use more oil consumption this is understood
Plzzzzz make a new video
140 quid for an mt07 filter wtf? I bought from DNA an air filter for my ER6 and it only cost 60 quid and it was a 30% bump in airflow or smth
they say this one with the stage 2 bump the airflow to 130-140% too
I hear the tune gives you more top end
Very nice video
Did you remove the engine braking?
Yes, it’s still there but way less. Highly recommend
If the wheel comes upeasier then it has to be accelerating faster by proxy ya goober
Badass toolset
I bought a K&N cuz that's all I can find for my bike...
What GPS app are you using?
Waze :)
Technically you should be able to get a bit more hp out of it
82 pounds for that bracket what a bunch of con men
Dude mine comes up easier that that standard with just a termignoni
So many lost cases
It's in your head
Stock 67 hp. Tuned 71 hp. Stock 46 ft-lb. Tuned 51 ft-lb. Peak numbers, but the fat mid-range gains are even greater at 6-7 hp and 6-7 ft-lb. Factor 8 pounds exhaust bulk lost, and much less time spent accelerating in every gear, it's not a head issue. Factory tunes are ALWAYS restrictive. But you have to go all the way with performance mods. It's not a matter of just putting a slip-on pipe on and getting your mind blown.
I knew the best one were the K&N 🤔
K&N filter is exactly the same as the stock filter size wise.
DNA has a MUCH bigger opening for air.
@@DeanosRides so why almost everyone consider them even superior to the Bmc? What's the difference then?
No idea, but check my comment above on this page what I did to mine....
I just used the stock filter, with a bigger opening and unrestricted airflow on it...HUGE difference!
Only difference I know between the K&N and stock filter is the K&N is reusable, or washable. Stock filter need to be replaced every so often.
@@DeanosRides I just found out that jakethesnakegarden did a video about it, comparing the k&n with the DNA.
Was going to mention that video, yes, great comparison right there....
you did something wrong
A test like this is useless.Do a test with-without on a dyno.
Not dyno tested disliked
Gholy shiyyt
Are you filipino? :)
maybe :)
TURBO TWINKIE :)
Dude doesn't even ride the bike. Short shifted every gear.
Its an MT-07, power dies after 6000rpm.
@@Surpriseify lol. Mine certainly doesn't. Right about 10k goes flat but maintains power until the Rev cut.
Well looking at torque curves it doesn't do much after 6000rpm anyway, or might be 8000 actually.
I rode one when i was upgrading my license, compared to my CB650 the high-end definitly felt flat.
Still a cracking bike tho.
@@Surpriseify it definitely makes torque early. Not Harley Davidson early but early. After exhaust air filter and some tuning the top end improved.
The bike sounds like junk
Why not just get a more powerful bike
Why buy a whole new bike, Switching over the insurance, taxing it and getting used to the new bike when you could modify your bike a lil bit to make it better?? You get more satisfaction out of seeing your daily bike get performance. Makes it feel like a brand new bike without spending for a whole separate bike
How do you remap the ecu by yourself?? The tune
I made a video on remapping the ecu it’s on the channel
