Yeah Robert, wasn't that weird?!? The goo on the brake shoes was a little sticky so it was kind of squeaking against the drum. I adjusted the breaks for a slight drag so it was within reaching distance to make that contact. That wasn't a real problem but I worried about the integrity of the shoe after being saturated in it's past. New shoes (eventually) were the way to go. Thanks for cheering me on, it's great to have you here for the fun!

Glad to see you back, and thrilled that your Bus is on the road! It’s a great feeling to get to drive something you put so much work into. Had to chuckle at the weatherstrip adhesive adventure, my experience with the stuff is much the same, works great, but is very messy. There is a clear version of the stuff, just as messy, but not as noticeable when it gets all over everything.😁
Thanks Nutt Farm Garage, glad to know I'm not the only messy person in the shop. It takes me all of 5 seconds to be covered in my project. Thanks for the welcome back... I'll try to get the next one out a little sooner, sharing this stuff is too much fun to wait so long. See you then!
"Drive - Fix - Repeat" perfect summary of owning an old VW bus. I got the same tires on mine. I found the cork valve cover gaskets I have are not an even size. They are different from gasket to gasket and vary in size from the top to the bottom. I try to find two close to the same size and and sometimes I stack two up to get a tight seal. Gluing valve cover gaskets? Got rid of the points and front drum brakes. Way better.
Hey Patrick! Thanks for your thoughts. These Hankook R8 tires aren't fancy but they have appropriately stiff sidewalls and seem to hold up. Our @VWLife friends in Texas like the General Grabber tires- may have to try those out sometime. Did not expect that with the brakes. I wonder why those contaminated and cleaned shoes did not work ? Was it a mechanical issue - out of spec in one or more dimensions ? Was it an eccentricity issue where the clean part wore down faster and uneven contact ? Hmmn....interesting because that is what I would have done too - spray them clean and sand them, and Bob's your uncle. Those wheels still look great ! Wish my second 67 was this clean. It's a deluxe, field rescue....hmm, black armrests ? oh it's coming off ? there are grey ? ewww. I used a hose on the INSIDE !
Hey DanTheManIOM, whatever contaminated the shoes (brake fluid or wheel bearing grease) would rise to the surface with some use and was very tacky; the noise would resonate through the brake springs and backing plate. I'm not sure that it was a problem by itself but with the knowledge that the shoes may have been compromised and the annoying noise it was enough to make replacing the shoes to be worthwhile. Thanks for the kudos regarding the wheels; I like the utilitarian look of a painted steel rim. Your '67 sounds like a project but aren't they all?!? Thanks for watching!
Nice work! Your attention to detail is an inspiration my good man. These damn things are fun to drive! I'm currently restoring my 65' bus now and appreciate your videos and your vw hacks.

Hey hey you! (see what I did there?) So far the score is silcon: 0, cork: eleventy billion. Not looking good for the silicon gaskets. I've got that other set that to try out sometime... we'll see how it goes. Thanks for watching!
Great update, as usual! The Starbucks drivethru was a familiar scene. It's nice when you get to be the bright spot in someone's day. I like how she asked for the preferred nomenclature, very respectful lol One question, when I heard the front hub noise I felt like I knew what it was instantly from a previous experience of my own but we came up with different solutions. My experience was the brake spring being too close to the intra-drum brake line and the sound coming from their interference when vibrating. Did you reuse your brake springs or replace them with the new shoes?
You said it well Adam; the "smiles per gallon" thing is for realsies and I enjoy the interactions that would not have otherwise happened. Thanks for sharing your experience with the noise I was chasing. I believe the springs characterized the sound I was hearing resonating through the backing plates. My investigation focused on the source of vibration, which I think was the sticky goo on the shoes rubbing against the drum. The brakes were adjusted before that test drive so the shoes were hovering extremely close to the drum's friction surface. Due to a slight out-of-round- condition they would make intermittent contact and cause the vibration like dragging a finger across tacky-dry paint. With the slight difference in semantics (noise vs. vibration), it seems like we may have been chasing the same thing. I reused the springs but it's possible they were re-installed without the interference you described. Either way, the contaminated shoes had to go and I haven't questioned the lack of noise... taking "yes" for an answer, if you will. Thanks for the question!
Yeah Jeff, this first attempt was a dud. I'll eventually try out that other set to see if I have any luck, but glad to have a method (cork) that works well until then. Thanks for checking out the video!
Thanks Cathy and Greg, I'm not sure what color it is; I think of it as maroon (not a good judge of shades) but some people call it orange. Seems to match the rust well! It was painted before the previous owner had it, so there is not much known history. Wax Red sounds good to me!
Excellent stuff! Those silicone valve cover gaskets aren’t great are they? Go with cork everytime for me with just a smear of oil to hold them in place.
Thanks James! I'm not impressed with the first try for these silicone gaskets. I like to try new things so I may give it another go, but not without a set of cork gaskets within arm's reach. Thanks for being here!
Great video! My question is, how are the elephant ear mirrors? I want to replace mine on my '65 but am worried they are going to vibrate like one set I installed a few years ago. I bought them from WW. Just wondering how yours are. Thank you. Keep the great videos coming. They are very inspirational and motivate me to get my a$$ moving on my bus!!!
Thanks Rich! The mirrors are OK; they give a decent view of traffic and I haven't had to readjust after the initial setup. These are the stainless ones from CIP1. Not sure if I got lucky or if these are the real deal. Glad to hear you're out working on the bus- keep it up and let us know how it goes!
Just told my wife that I am going to find a 1970 bus like the one I had in college. Pay 10k for it spend another 10K in parts and another 10K in tools and then sell it when she makes me get rid of it for 7K

Hacks?!? Only proper techniques used here... except for all the improper ones...
But really, thanks- I get what you mean and am glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for the kind remarks and I hope your '65 is coming along nicely. Let us know when you're on the road!
Nice video! Love the bus!
Thanks flat four luka! It's been a fun project-turned-driver. Anybody reading this needs to check out your IG feed; you post some cool stuff!
@@HapticGarage thank you, I'm glad you like it!
Another well done video. The bus is really coming along. I’m loving this project and as this one approaches its end, I’m looking forward to your next project.
Thanks Ken, I appreciate your support and friendship. More on the way!
Hey Haptic, coming back later with a comment. greetings, Hubertus.
Hey Hubertus! I hope all is well for you and the T3 is progressing nicely. Thanks for watching the video!
@@HapticGarage You are very welcome, nice to see you also with the continuing of your project.
@@HapticGarage Hey Brent thanks all is well for the time being so I can`t complain. Thanks for watching the video I hope all is well with you as well.
Another amazing video ! Problem and solution always fine tuning this and that on VW ! It's great to see you back !!
Thanks so much Neal, it's always great to hear from you. We just can't help but to keep wrenching on these fine old VWs. Thanks for being a part of the channel!
Honestly such a a great video!! like your editing style, the music and all the different things you off in one video!
Great video man😁! and also i’m assuming the Giuseppes Cruise was your first cruise in the bus? the part 2 video of the cruise with you in it is out so whenever you get a chance check it out:),
and it was great seeing you again on the Cruise🤙🏻! Looking forward to seeing you and your bus at future shows:)

Thanks Froslife! You even added a graphic with the logo, that's super cool! The cruise was my first time participating in an organized cruise- couldn't be happier with everybody that was a part of it and how much fun we all had. I did take the bus to Bug Jam and drove around the area; stay tuned for the next video for more bus road trips. Thanks again for the shout out!
@@HapticGarage You’re Very Welcome!! We shout-out everyone that we come in contact with, the helping VW Hand and you 100% deserve it cause you and your bus have a great story! that’s what it’s all about:).

Original cork 146,000 miles on a 36 hp 58 beetle and no leaks.
So you're saying I've got a chance...
Sounds like a great Beetle, keep it going!
You cant beat the original style cork. They actually swell when exposed to oil.
I had problems with the orange silicone valve cover gaskets. They kept leaking. Went back to the cork gaskets and no more leaks.
Yeah Jeff, this first attempt was a dud. I'll eventually try out that other set to see if I have any luck, but glad to have a method (cork) that works well until then. Thanks for checking out the video!
Great Video, just found this channel some glad I did thanks.
Thanks Mike, glad you found us!
Is the red "wax red" or another, I like it.
Sounds like a plan Luis! True story- I bought a '79 Ranchero for $100, put $4k into it and sold it back to the previous owner for $1.5k. So worth it. Thanks for watching!
Hi there, new subscriber from Sydney Australia. I have been driving my 1965 Devon camper here in Australia as a daily driver since I bought it in 1999 up until 2 years ago. I have owned lots of cars and the bus has been by far the most reliable. Another UK youtuber Hubnut did a review on it whilst he was visiting here just before covid hit if your interested czcams.com/video/Jny79IT12F4/video.html Also have a 1955 single cab ute, 1961 beetle Karmann vert, 65 Type 3 Notchback 1500S and a 58 356A and 60 356B. Nice presenting style in your videos. Cheers Steve
Hey Steve, thanks for joining the fun! I'll check out the video on your '65, that's quite a history you have with it- super cool. What a great collection of VWs, you've got some real diamonds there. Thanks for checking out the video, it's great to have you with us!
You spend all that time on breaks and you don’t even check the heads, valves, gaskets or anything in the engine? 🧐
Yeah.... really wanted to open it up but knew that wasn't right for the project. So far the risk is working out but may still regret it someday.
