    They also make a Butyl Caulk that you might like better you could put it in the groove and caulk it.

    This is one of those discussions that I’m scared to talk about. I must say it’s very difficult to find a good rubber. Heck we didn’t even do the safaris and most of the darn things leaked. It was a huge bummer when all the hardwood and insulation got wet. Great explanations of how the water moves/leaks. This is very nice of you to warn people about this. Sucks when you garage it for a couple years fixing it and getting it ready to ride and then you pull it outside and bam it gets wet. Also Opening up the pop out window frames and explaining how those 2 screws in there get rusted/frozen. And how to retap the threads. People would love that. Oh and that heavy gauge spring assembly that hides under the wing windows too. People would love that. Your videos are great diy. Really really great stuff.

      most of the time I end up replacing the pop out frames. I used to get them for 16 each. IDK now.

    Very nicely done! Back in the 80s & 90s, My friends and I had bugs and them rabbits. Though the problem was not with the bugs, persay, there was an issue with the rabbit's windshield whistling and leaking. Our solution back then was to get a Black Plumber's Silicone and put into the grooves - the groove that went into the body and the grove that held the windshield. I forget its name but it did not stick to the rubber but it did peel off easily when the rubber was removed. But it did end the leaks the the whistling. Some of it leaked out of the groove but that was easy to clean up and it showed that it sealed up from the inside out.

    Grandpa taught me to massage Vaseline into the bottom seal and wrinkles then ⁹wipe the excess off and no leaks anymore!
    Last fairly long too and keep always a jar in the bus for touch up if necessary.

    My dad's 67 was only a year old when it developed a leak in the upper corner of the windshield , and it didn't have the safari windows. I remember him driving the German autobahn during the rain and asking me to wipe the leak. It must have been that rough metal corner you were talking about. I don't know when he got it fixed, maybe during the next service.

    Hello, I saw this video about leaking safari windows. I also had that problem with my safari windows. The rubbers did not even fit properly around the windows. (I have a 1958 T1 restored in the Netherlands that I imported from Texas) Restored with original parts. So also good quality window seals. Yet my safaris leaked!! Since it rains a lot in the Netherlands, I also had this problem. My solution is as simple as it is effective, I use Vaseline on the corners of the rubbers where they do not seal properly and also between the rubbers of the frame and the rubbers around the safaris. The only disadvantage is that Vaseline remains spreadable and can therefore stain. But it does provide a watertight seal. And the costs are minimal to solve this problem. Just like applying the Vaseline. This is done without much work.

    Hey Mike ! My problem of the week is my window regulators that were Brazllian came in a flat package so you have to bend the last 2 inches of the top . Well even the first time I rolled them up they ( both ) were screwed . I tried to do the best job possible ? I should have left the old ones on , because now I have to tear up the new felts and seals . Just great !!!!!!

    Is this a butyl type tape? It’s a great idea; a gentleman who’s a glazer by trade uses butyl sealant inside the rubber gasket as extra insurance. Works great on the rear windows in Bugs preventing the package trays from rusting out.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  Před rokem +1

      yea I put a link on amazon for it. probably would work on windows as well but it might be really hard to remove one. Some people use it to install glass. It did work pretty well I did have some leaks probably because of my metal work not being perfect but really not that bad. Plus I have a curtain rod that conflicts with safari window rubber. so that didnt help.

    The square channel repop safari windows are well known for leaking. The OG windows have a different channel outside profile that is more "V" shaped. Creative Engineering out of England makes reproduction Safari windows with a factory profile that will seal better. The aftermarket seals shipped with brands like Wolfgang and others are frankly horrible. Sadly, even NOS german seals would leak and they had the correct formed corners. BTW, those are unobtainium. I'm sure Mike's suggestions will help either way. IMO it is worth getting the windows that have the factory profile. I have a few sets of factory windows, but they need resto. If I were buying today, I'd go with the CE's.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  Před rokem +1

      yea I dont think I will be buying anymore Wolfgang ones anyway because they are just too expensive. they raised their prices from 600 to over 1000.
