"Instead of contemplating how to solve this problem, I should contemplate the rope" to "I AM THE GOD OF THE MACHINES, BOW TO ME MORTALS" pipeline is real and it's glorious.
"An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity."
Joking aside, I really think this is something every new programmer should hear, and I firmly believe Terry hit the nail right on the head with that one.
The point of programming is to do things more efficiently, so don't try to over-complicate things when you really don't have to.
While there's an element of truth, I think it's overrated though. True high efficiency virtually never appears globally simple, at most only locally.

We had a guy who was the low-level library guru for the company. We rolled all our own libraries. No C++ standard library for anything. So, naturally, we had to have our own optimized string comparison function. Fast forward to a year later when an obscure bug starts causing string comparisons to match with the wrong arguments. You ask for one thing by name, and you get something else. Since this was in code I was working on, I had to try to fix it. The thing I realized was that the two strings that were incorrectly matching were always 16 bytes long. So, I decided to look into our string comparison code. And that's where the bug was. Some edge case or an off-by-one error. I forgot what it was. For that day, I was the guru.
