    This week we are tearing out all the interior panels in the 401, vacuuming any dirt we find, and dry ice blasting parts of the airplane. This dry ice blaster from Cold Jet works so well we can’t wait to use it on all the parts and pieces on the rest of this airplane to make sure everything is 100% clean. Also an update for next weeks video about a potential donor plane that could save our 401!

    Take it from an old A&P that did many C checks on MD-11, 737, 727, and MD-80/DC-9 cut some plywood to lay down over where the floor panels were. It will protect the areas you are not working on and make your life so much easier than walking on the frames. Also, take that overwing exit window out and fashion a plug that you can hook up a portable AC unit to. Will make working inside the cabin much more tolerable. One last note, when it comes time to put it all back together you will learn to hate clip nuts. I used to catch so many fellow A&P mechanics cheating by using silicone to hold in screws where they forgot to put a clip nut, or it slipped out of place. And thats what holds the lining on the walls of the baggage areas in most of the airliners I worked on. Fantastic work and I love what your doing to this bird. This has certainly turned into a restoration project of passion and it shows.

    Seeing this colossal work, I tell myself that restoring a DC3 or a Super Constellation would be a project requiring a lot of participants. The videos are very instructive on the construction of an airplane, so I imagine a liner during the big visit. The dry ice cleaner outperforms the sand cleaner. Not only does he overcome everything, but he leaves nothing behind. Well, then, the "turboprop" option is not considered? But a donor plane is like a car, it's great.

    This really shows what goes into the construction of an airplane like this. You don't think about what's there just standing on the runway. It is a very complex piece of equipment. Unprotected access points made the plane unflyable. If you ever expect it to be reliable then this is the work you have to do. Mice eat about anything including wiring. ALL of that wiring will have to be carefully examined and tested. This is a big job but they are making it look simple. They just go in and tear it all apart. They must have an organization plan that hasn't been mentioned yet. I can do about anything but I would want to store everything in a way I had all the bits and pieces numbered and sequenced so I knew exactly what went where. So, let's get on with it. Parts ID or not:-)

I don't know how good the interior of the other is, but consider bringing those side panels to an upholstery shop for having them totally redone, including the curtains. I know they try to clean them, but they are old, dull and it's time to go. You may know that at some point you will need to remove the landing gear motor and gear box for inspection, right? Also, make sure to have around a Maintenance Manual and Parts Catalog for the 401. They will be quite needed. Keep up with the great job. 👍

    Relieved to see you wearing the respirator and safety glasses while vacuuming the mouse debris. A friend of mine did neither and nearly lost his life to the lung and heart infections that followed an attic cleanup. A hepa filter on the vac was not enough.

      @wombatillo Před rokem

      The vacs and filter seals usually always leak some unless you're using a very professional grade hepa vac. Can't trust them to keep bacteria on the inside only. It's a good idea to always wear a P100 when dealing with dust like that.

    Best advice to battle the heat when working in the interior of the 401 put up a blower fan in the opening of the tail and it should vent great and won't be a sauna in there although the hanger still would be warm you still would have great airflow and would enjoy more working not sweating like a cow in a slaughterhouse also another advice would be to get like a magnet tray for the screws. I am sure there is a company out there that can put aircraft parts into a pool of corrosion remover/prevention like they do on expensive car bodies to preserve them. Joe and Keith do some awesome work. Even when the work conditions had to stink (literally) and were 100+ degrees they keep good spirits and understood it's part of the job. When someone gets bad spirits their work suffers.

    You are ambitious to want every inch of the inside of everything cleaned. IMO, it looks like the dry ice cleaner machine's cleaning path is very small in diameter. With the square inch that needs to be cleaned by the very small cleaning path, the time spent cleaning with this is going to be enormous. Too bad the cleaning path cannot be wider to cut down on the time spent.

      Under most circumstances, resoring a plane this bad would not be worth the money. Buying a use one would be better. The ONLY reason this one can be saved is because it is literally a charity case that gets a lot of donations. Time damaged it enough to make repairs more expensive than a used plane. It has the rare case of many people deciding to throw money at it.

  • @John-nc4bl

    Here is a tip for removing 'stubborn' Phillips screws.
    Grind a few thou off the Phillips tip, 'bit' so that it does not bottom out in the screw head.
    This will allow for the four flutes of the bit to sit tightly into the four cut-outs in the screw head.
    Also, pick the crud out of the tough to remove screw heads with a dental pick.
    Thanks for your videos.
