  • Polaris Inc. is a dominant player in the off-road vehicle market, selling top-of-the-line ATV's, snowmobiles, and utility vehicles, among others. Unlike many other companies, Polaris saw its revenue increase in 2020 thanks to an unexpected boom in powersports and increased interest in outdoor activities. While it rides this high, however, some doubt how long it can last.
Correction (April 14, 2021): At (1:55) we misstated / misidentified the name of the boat company Polaris acquired. The correct name is Boat Holdings.
Correction (April 14, 2021): At (7:33) we misstated Polaris’s electric vehicle plan. The correct plan is to offer an electric vehicle in each of its core product segments.
In the past year, Polaris has begun expanding its electric vehicle line-up, hoping to gain some further momentum from the rapidly-growing market. However, some analysts are skeptical of the company's ability to push into the electric space, which may be challenging given consumer hesitation regarding comparative performance, as well as fierce competition from other leading brands.

The EV has had zero maintenance except for topping up the lead acid batteries. Charge it each night and after two years if use it just keeps trucking. Lithium batteries would be great, but the old lead acid batteries work fine on this vehicle and with a top speed of 25mph it goes fast enough on my property and is quiet at the same time. As one who owns Polaris ATVs, and since 2006, I was surveyed about future priorities, including an electric ATV. My response was that electric ATVs were a MUCH lower priority than simply improving quality, fixing their very notchy shifter (vastly inferior to Can Am & others), a more reliable clutch, better handling of warranty, offering a true lockable differential for the rear, not a spool (the current standard), and not the Polaris 'turf' mode. With current technology, an electric ATV will weigh too much, cost to much, have too short a range, and if it's not a hybrid, leave people stranded when the juice runs out.
I currently own two Sportsman's, including a 2015 XP-1000. While the XP1000 is tops for ride comfort, Can Am has come a long way on comfort, plus has a much better clutch and shifter, better build quality, a better feature set in their high end models (e.g. beadlock wheels, heated handles, etc.), a substantially more precise power steering unit, a quieter engine, better anti-theft security, and MUCH easier belt change (important if replacement is ever needed in the field)

I took a hard look at the Slingshot a couple of years ago, and I liked it a lot, but did not purchase one because it was not a vehicle I would use often enough to justify its purchase. I also looked at the electric GEM low speed vehicle for use as an around town/neighborhood runabout to use instead of my car. But at the end of the day, that was a very crude and expensive limited range electric vehicle. It needs a total ground up redo to ever expect to be seriously competitive in the market. Virtually every other electric vehicle I looked at was better. By a lot. However, if they start producing good electric vehicles, I will take another hard look with intent to purchase. They have all the bits now to make a gem of a GEM now. Just hope they do it.

A concept touted for autos is one motor per wheel. In principle, this independent control of torque and power to each wheel is a great asset. But for tasks such as steep hill climbing on a mixture of hard rock with patches of loose gravel, EACH AND EVERY WHEEL must be able to provide enough torque and enough power to keep the vehicle climbing steadily up exceptionally steep grades. Given the weight of an ATV plus gear and rider, and the typical diameter of the tires, the implication is that if 3 wheels don't have traction, but one does, then each wheel needs to able to apply something on the order of ~1000 ft-lbs of torque, do so at some speed well above stall (where on electric motors, torque is typically highest), and do so for long grades without overheating the motor or batteries.

Perhaps Polaris is not the company most suited to push forward on battery powered UTVs, given their track record for reliability issues already existing. I can only imagine how adding whole new potential points of engineering failure (Polaris electrical layouts can be nightmarish as it is) to an emerging technology who's adherents wish desperately to see adopted en mass. Should Polaris become the first major manufacturing powerhouse to roll them out, riddled with reliability issues, it could set the concept back in terms of public acceptance. Some use these types of vehicles from a home base like their house, ranch, workplace, or a vacation cabin. For some of them an electric version might make sense if it’s not a big premium over a gas version which is unlikely. And all electric will be a hard sell to all those who modify their gas powered vehicles with after market exhaust systems to make even more noise while electric vehicles make almost no noise. It’s childish but it’s true with motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.
And for anyone who wants to go play away from a home base they make almost no sense. Plus electric vehicles suffer significantly diminished range and performance in cold temperatures making an electric snowmobile even less appealing. There are also a lot of players ahead of Polaris in electric motorcycles and golf cart like applications. So I have to wonder if this is mostly Polaris management foolishly chasing growth in areas that mostly don’t make sense. This is what happens when growth is rewarded above all else and often leads to expensive mistakes. I predict Polaris will regret chasing the shinyTesla when they’re in a completely different market with very different customers.

Cordless tools typically store a fraction of one kilowatt-hour (kWh), as do electric bicycles. A Tesla has 85 KWh of energy storage and more. If you've ever pushed an ATV around, you know they have a LOT more rolling friction than even a car weighing much more. So, their rate of energy consumption will reach or even exceed that of a Tesla. Consequently, given most of us are using quads in the boonies, a long ways from charging stations, for any decent range, an ATV would need a battery pack pretty close to that of a Tesla.

As for solar panels, the large panels on campers are in the range of 150 to 200 Watts - but only at noon, on a clear day, with clean panels. At 100% efficiency, it takes 746 Watts to equal ONE horsepower. with efficiency losses, we can easily raise this to 1000 Watts per horsepower. In other words, a single panel the size of those used on campers is way too large for an ATV, and yet only only provides less than one quarter or even one fifth of one horsepower. This means you could stand still all day to charge it, but only net a few minutes of actual run time.

I specifically looked up the capacity of a battery pack for the Tesla. It was 85 kWh. I won't argue that there are battery packs with less capacity (50 kWh), as I only looked at the first one that popped up. As for the power that an ATV requires, I own SIX quads, all but one that I've purchased since 2001. The lowest powered one is a carbureted 400 CC Arctic Cat, with a little under 30 hp. The most powerful quad (fuel injected XP 1000) has 89 hp. Except for rolling on flat terrain at relatively constant speed, the 30 HP (22+ kW at 100% efficiency) quad is way underpowered. The electric quad will likely be even heavier than the 400CC unit. So from my perspective, I have to disagree with your 5 to 15 kWh estimate, that is unless you're fine with it running out of juice after ~20 minutes of use.on anything other than cruising on flat terrain.
