Star Wars: Rebellion is a board game of epic conflict between the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance for two to four players.
Experience the Galactic Civil War like never before. In Rebellion, you control the entire Galactic Empire or the fledgling Rebel Alliance. You must command starships, account for troop movements, and rally systems to your cause. Given the differences between the Empire and Rebel Alliance, each side has different win conditions, and you'll need to adjust your play style depending on who you represent:
As the Imperial player, you can command legions of Stormtroopers, swarms of TIEs, Star Destroyers, and even the Death Star. You rule the galaxy by fear, relying on the power of your massive military to enforce your will. To win the game, you need to snuff out the budding Rebel Alliance by finding its base and obliterating it. Along the way, you can subjugate worlds or even destroy them.
As the Rebel player, you can command dozens of troopers, T-47 airspeeders, Corellian corvettes, and fighter squadrons. However, these forces are no match for the Imperial military. In terms of raw strength, you'll find yourself clearly overmatched from the very outset, so you'll need to rally the planets to join your cause and execute targeted military strikes to sabotage Imperial build yards and steal valuable intelligence. To win the Galactic Civil War, you'll need to sway the galaxy's citizens to your cause. If you survive long enough and strengthen your reputation, you inspire the galaxy to a full-scale revolt, and you win.
Featuring more than 150 plastic miniatures and two game boards that account for thirty-two of the Star Wars galaxy's most notable systems, Rebellion features a scope that is as large and sweeping as any Star Wars game before it.
Yet for all its grandiosity, Rebellion remains intensely personal, cinematic, and heroic. As much as your success depends upon the strength of your starships, vehicles, and troops, it depends upon the individual efforts of such notable characters as Leia Organa, Mon Mothma, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Emperor Palpatine. As civil war spreads throughout the galaxy, these leaders are invaluable to your efforts, and the secret missions they attempt will evoke many of the most inspiring moments from the classic trilogy. You might send Luke Skywalker to receive Jedi training on Dagobah or have Darth Vader spring a trap that freezes Han Solo in carbonite!

It's the best 2-player Star Wars game, period. It's an easier teach with less need to know the lore than War of the Ring, what I would consider it's direct competition. And, the game is designed to have "memorable moments".
Much like Root, you probably know if you want to give this a shot. But each time I've played Rebellion, I've enjoyed it and you should too.

Played both War of the Ring and Star Wars Rebellion, and I like Rebellion a lot more. I am not a big Star Wars fan, but the concept of an huge force trying to swat down a the Rebel forces, while those Rebels sabotage every plan you make is executed so well in this game.

I adore both this game and War of the Ring... in fact, I rated them both perfect 10s on BGG. heh Easily two of my all-time favorites. I even invested in the Anniversary Edition for War of the Ring, which was quite pricey... got the Anniversary Edition expansion for it too. But yeah... if you made me pick, I would probably pick Star Wars: Rebellion. I also have more plays of it under my belt.

3:02 My very first game of Rebellion, my brother chose the planet to the left of Coruscant as his rebel base, and I got distracted going elsewhere just before I was about to check it. I literally ended up checking every single other planet in the galaxy, and went through the entire probe deck. My brother won that game.
I've only played three times, but I've enjoyed every game I've played (even though I lost two of those). Every time the game clocked in at about 3 hours, so that seems to be about the usual time if the rebels are playing well.

Great video! Derek is 100% correct: there is NO BETTER thematic Star Wars experience you can get on the tabletop than Rebellion. I freaking adore Imperial Assault, and played the hell out of the old Decipher CCG, and Rebellion tops them all. It isn't a perfect game, but it is an amazing journey and a ton of fun.

Around the 8:00 mark - In the movies, Space and Ground Battles are always happening simultaneously - I have zero problem with this.....hence it being called Cinematic Combat..
It stays true to the spirit of these scenes as youre recreating your own version of the OT and Rogue One in a box.
Having to always finish a space battle before you even attempt a ground battle would just throw the balance of the game out of whack - and would disregard all the times we've seen someone lead a stealth strike team onto Endor or U-Wings drop off fighters onto the beaches of Scariff.
Also General Tagge is pronounced Tag 🙂

Love the episode and the game. Just need to point out, landing troops on the ground and losing a battle in space makes sense and happens in SWRO. But fully agree it takes a lot of time and is quite clunk the battle. But at least in my “head” makes sense! Hehehehe

    • @jacobstacey6550
      @jacobstacey6550 Před 2 lety +1

Right? Like, why wouldn't it make sense?
Thematically, it would be fairly difficult to prevent your enemy from landing troops on something the size of the planet, especially with Star Wars technology.
Mechanically, I like it because it gives the attacker a chance to see how well the land battle is going while they decide if they want to retreat or not.

I play this game a lot with different friends and we all love it. The base game is awful compared to the expansion though. The expansion completely changes combat from being a mind numbing slog to fairly interesting - although that being said combat is still the weakest part of the game. The new cards & heroes really spice the game up and i've yet to play a game that felt similar to a previous one.

I came to think that tracking damage could be solved by creating a printable PDF record sheet. Since damage does not go up and down, using a recordsheet where you fill circles when ships are damaged, as if it was a form, would avoid the tracking problem with tokens. What do you think?

I looooooove this game. This is the first (and so far, only) game that I bought a third party insert for... I also got the Meeple Realty one, btw. This is definitely a case where the insert gets the game setup quickly and also just keeps everything nicely organized. I also got an extra set of dice just to halt the passing of dice back and forth across the table non-stop. lol Not necessary, of course... but just more convenient. :-) I wish FFG would just sell the dice; I ended up getting them from someone who apparently must have parted out a copy of the game or something. As for the combat, I never hated it as much as many seem to, but the expansion is quite excellent and fixes those worries. Not a cheap game to get.. with expansion... and with insert... but I rated this one a perfect 10 on BGG (even before there was an expansion) and it will never leave my collection. Easily one of my all-time favorites. Very much worth the price... and worth the game length. :-)

    @Straddllw Před 3 lety +1

This is easy!!! My favourite game of all time is twilight imperium 4, and I can give you 10 reasons why you shouldn't play it. In no particular order:
    1. Length, if you think Rebellion is long, ti4 is 3x longer. 7-10 hours for your first playthrough easily.
    2. If you want to chill out and not take things seriously and fool around with space risk. Because this game is so long, you might ruin it for other people who do want to play to win.
    3. If you like everything streamlined without lots of stuff to remember. There's a lot of timing windows and special finicky rules in ti4.
    4. If you don't like geeky themes like fantasy or sci fi.
    5. If you dislike conflict and people breaking deals. This is an inevitability in ti4 and you'll get upset.
    6. If you think getting a rule wrong ruins the gaming session and/or is a big rules lawyer. You'll most likely get a rule wrong because there's so many interactions between rules. Even Dane the designer gets rules wrong and rely on fans and changes his mind on rules ruling.
    7. If you dislike negotiations. At the end of the day ti4 is political and involves deal making.
    8. If you're overly competitive and thinks getting ganged up on and king made against is unfair. Once again, this game is highly political.
    9. If you are prone to analysis paralysis. This game is already too long, you'll make it really bad for everyone and be overwhelmed with the choices and randomness.
    10. This brings me to #10 - if you hate randomness and prefer perfect information.
I can probably name more but this is just off the top of my head and took like 5 minutes to write.

"I bet an app with a Star Wars IP takes a lot more negotiation to get done than a board game where you already have the licensing for it" - Imperial Assault begs to differ 😄.
I've always liked to look at the probe aspect of the game as another level of involvement for the Empire player. It would be easy to cross out systems from a handheld map or tick off drawn systems in an app. But if all you have is cards and your mind, then you need to be a little more careful.
And yes, there are fan apps for Rebellion helping with both base checking and producing units.

    • @KabukiKid
      @KabukiKid Před 2 lety

I just have a laminated map that the Imperial player can just mark up with a dry erase marker as they play... with a cover to keep it hidden from prying rebel eyes. ;-) An app would make it easy too, but I know me and I'd still use the physical map instead.

We love this game and that's why it doesn't bother us if a play takes more than 3 hours.
(some groups play this game in under 3 or even 2 hours so it depends like so often also on the players).
Many great games can take over 3 hours (Terraforming mars, TI, arkham horror, scythe, wow etc.) and they are great anyway or we love them and so the long play time is a good thing.
And not all of us know the star wars universe that well but we love this game anyway.
And we like the gameplay and also both sides are interesting to play.
And even just the base game is cool and yeah the expansion makes it more tactical.
So like so often the opinion about a game is very subjectively.
So I wouldn't suggest anybody not to play this game because I think the playtime is too long or you have to know the star wars story that well.

I think Rebellion does it very well, it's just that you need to play with a bit of strategy. If you try to direct head-to-head the Empire as the Rebellion obviously it's not going to work. Your job is to weaken the Empire, force it to make tough decisions, misdirect, and accomplish enough to pressure it into defeat.

There's two reasons why I never got this:
    1. It seemed like every group that played it asked the same questions, like "Who did you put in Corbonite?" or, "Who did you make a Jedi Master?" It seemed like every group played through the same beats.
    2. Related to number 1. If everyone is playing through the same beats, is there enough there to have a different experience? Sure you can make the game easier or harder for yourself by choosing a farther or closer planet for the Rebel Base, but this seems like a game that gives your that magic story only once.
If that's the case, then I feel like I'd only pull this game out if I could teach at least one new person to play it.

@@derekfunkhouser364 That's good to hear. It's Star Wars, so it naturally peaked my interest. For example, I prefer Xia, but I still picked up Outer Rim. 😃
It's been so long since I hunted down info for this game, those were the two examples that I remembered offhand. There were more, but I don't remember what they were anymore. It just felt like within one game you would encounter everything and the only difference was which character encountered it and when.

Bruh, be happy none of the Disney madness made it into this game to corrupt it.

The reason I will never buy and probably never play this: It's a very long two player game.

Or a fun review that (like all CZcams videos and channels) would love to have people click on it. Instead of dying on the algorithm.
Go buy a pony and criticize it for not being a horse.
