    I resisted this for so long then saw a copy of the core set for $15 on Facebook marketplace and said hey for that price what the heck could it hurt... 8 months later I'm missing only 1 villain, 6 heroes and my wife (grudgingly) got me the etched box that Alex has for father's day.... And I was way more excited than a grown man should get over an empty box. Haha

    All the criticism is valid, but this game is still amazing! I have everything for it, and play it once a week with a friend. I’ve even made custom villain decks because it’s so much fun 👍😁

    I play this with my 2 teenage boys as a 2 or 3 player game. This is one of our favorite board/card games. I think it's the math puzzles, combos, and the complex decisions that they like. I don't feel like we need to own ALL the content though. We just buy what we like whenever.

    This method is an excellent way to sell the game: give reasons for saying "no" to the game in order to ensure that someone gets a full measure of the game and really wants it before jumping in.

  • @kmichaelmace
    @kmichaelmace Před 3 lety +6

    The “theme” for me is built into the cards. How each character is unique and each one’s mechanics makes sense thematically. For example, Ant Man’s abilities reward you for changing from small to normal to big each round. Hawkeye has arrows you try to put in the quiver.

  • @kuiperkineticliterature7586

    I think my biggest gripe about Marvel Champions from a business standpoint is that every time you play, you require the "standard" cards that go into the villain deck. This means that:
    1. You cannot build multiple villain decks at once. If you want to play an entire campaign with your friends (or simply try multiple encounters in a single play session) you have to break apart the villain deck and do deck construction. This is really disruptive to the campaign experience.
    2. Because these same 7 standard villain cards are played in every encounter, they will wear down more than the other cards in the villain deck, leading to them becoming damaged/marked over time. (This isn't an issue if you sleeve, but sleeving requires you to either sleeve a huge number of villain cards with each new expansion, or constantly re-sleeve any time you want to change villains.)
    3. The only way to get the standard villain cards is from the core box. So if any of those cards become lost, damaged/worn from constant use, have fun spending another $50 on another core box if you ever want to play the game again.
    For the above reasons, it strikes me as absurd (and borderline disrespectful to their customers) that they refuse to reprint the standard villain cards outside the core box. When I pay $40 for a new campaign like Rise of Red Skull or Galaxy's Most Wanted with 260+ new cards, it seems like it would be trivial to include extra copies of those cards (especially since these expansions are meant to be played "as campaigns," where you play several different villains in a row).
    This is a complaint/problem that could be easily solved -- which is why it's even more bonkers to me that they still aren't budging on it: I've bought all the expansions and now have over a dozen villains that all have to share the same 7 standard cards from the core box.

    • @adamrosenquist9531
      @adamrosenquist9531 Před 3 lety

      Hmm. I guess I would be annoyed if I felt like I was paying for cards I already had again. But you make valid points. Maybe they’ll come up with a cheap “key cards” pack that you can pick up to make villain swapping easier. And if you have a place for me to add my voice to make it happen I’d be happy to do so.

    • @RocketMagnetUK
      @RocketMagnetUK Před 3 lety +2

      Personally I'd rather they Added a "Standard 2" set with new different "Standard cards" I could use over the entire game than simply more copies of the core. Potentially a harder standard set?... this could even be modular in it's own right by card for card "upgrades" for each Standard card where you can swap in as many as you like?
      Not too much of an issue breaking out the 7 Standard cards. With decent organisation it's a 2 minute job IME and compared to setting up your Hero's it's trivial in comparison.
      If you Sleeve everything in Clear/Clear then you never need to re-sleeve. Personally I just have a system where all encounter deck cards are in the same orange backed sleeves. So yes it's a lot of Sleeves and quite costly but if you play enough that your constantly changing villains then you could argue it's worth the cost considering the play value your getting.
      Yes another set of Standard cards could be useful but MC is actually one of the best customer friendly models they have IMO and nowhere near as anti consumer as Arkham Horror. Though I do agree it would be nice to include an extra set in a big box expansion but not at the cost of new content which is what would probably happen.

    It’s one of our favorites. I think that you make valid points but as someone who doesn’t like all of the heroes released, there’s no need to get everything. We enjoy the challenge of the different villains and the uniqueness of the heroes we use. It’s not for everyone but we like it a lot!

  • @Justin-mu8hh
    @Justin-mu8hh Před 3 lety +2

    I have the entire collection in one box. Setting up is a breeze, maybe 10 minutes tops. Deck building is done prior and even if we deck build at the table we consider that a fun aspect to talk, plan, and enjoy a drink. Keeping the colors together in a simple way helps to manage cleanup to 5-10 minutes. Not bad at all!
    Edit:
    I enjoy the game at 2 and 3. We really enjoy the theme and teaming up. Being optimal is not the way we play so we are fine to not talk about our cards to other players, but rather just say “I got you” or “don’t worry about that” etc. really keeps the game a good clip and feels more like a team of hero’s battling.

    I liked Arkham Horror LCG but it's been so hard to find the Mythos packs this last 12 / 18 months. I managed to build the full Dunwich cycle after 6 - 8 months of searching and called a halt there. Marvel Champions was so much easier to get the packs for. I play my games in 2 stages, I play 2 handed so I spend an 30 mins one night making up the 2 hero decks and the Villan deck for the next game and then when it comes to the next play session I just pull the 3 premade decks out and get started. Benefits... I'm not rushing the deck building part, I can enjoy that almost as much as the play session and when I do sit down to play I'm starting play in seconds because everything is good to go.

    I've only experienced this game solo. My girlfriend hates card games, so I really doubt she'd ever want to play. I also play Pokémon and sometimes MtG, so the deckbuilding aspect is great fun. However, I don't know if I'll get more hero/villian packs or even the other campaign boxes. Perhaps when i think I need more aspect cards or a different way of playing, then sure I'll cough up some money. But I don't have that much space to store this monster of a game lol. At the end of the day, it's a great way to spend some time being sucked into a Marvel adventure for an hoir or two

    Great video. I managed to to get everything up though the release of Red Skull, but at that point, for time and money, it became a choice of that or Arkham LCG and I chose Arkham for the very reasons you pointed out.
    Im a long time Marvel comics fan and part of the reason for moving to just Arkham was that Marvel United began scratching the Marvel Comics itch for me.
    I would love to see a boardgameco comparison video between Marvel Champions and Marvel United. And for good measure you could also toss in Marvel Legendary.

    I think the game plays best at 3. But ... you can’t just pick random cards and random characters. Pick cards that play well with multiple players. Make sure the person focused on Aggression is doing the damage while the character focused on justice is thwarting.

    The card color and math dialogue portion was so perfectly on the money. I really wanted this game to be more than it ended up being. So glad someone else said what this game really is …. It is really just a boss fight with a tedious thwart management component that completely takes me out of marvel world and feels like I’m clocking in to work. Where are the interesting surprises…? If someone could have just figured out how to get crisis protocol into a card game without the minis… like getting locations and narrative this game would be definitive and a must have. Thank you for saying what needed to be said on this game. All points made perfectly clear especially as all can see you have majority of the game content right there on the screen. This game feels an awful lot like playing monopoly just going around the board and collecting properties… not very compelling. Even changing up the game and creating an initiative score to see if you or villain goes first or something that doesn’t feel rinse and repeat

  • @davidvartanian
    @davidvartanian Před 3 lety

    Playing starter decks on Standard eliminate the need for deck construction. There are various modes to fit different styles of play. Want to play a quick 3 player game? Do skirmish mode. Standard and Rookie modes also eliminates the need to buy the complete card collection. You don’t need the strongest cards on easier modes. The game is as complex and expensive as you want it to be

    Great review, I really enjoy this series. Personally, I am a big Fan of Marvel Champions and think it hits a sweet spot for me. I even think the campaign elements are not necessary and agree that someone who wants that might prefer Arkham Horror (although setting is a big decission point), in fact, I would not have jumped in if it was yet another campaign game. Kudos for FFG to resisting that trend here, because I am at a point in my collection where campaign games won't be bought. The ones I have already (and I skipped Gloomhaven for exactly that reason) will probably last for the next 10 years.

    Yes the cost can be high but considering how modular MC is you can be very selective in what you buy if you like as no content needs other prior content to function. It's not like AH where you basically have to buy entire cycles (if you can find them) and another Core just to make some characters viable... MC is 4 player in the core with all hero's being viable.
    All MC hero's are playable out of the packet with a bit less required deck construction other than some minor tweaking as you learn what doesn't work but open for more depth as you up the difficulty.

    @shanepheeney9029 Před 2 měsíci

    Umm. I put EVERY GAME away in an orderly fashion, including but not limited to MC. Don't see why you "expect" not too do so with MC. Don't know what you do for most of that 15mins, but it don't take that long to make/break the game. Does mommy still clean your bedroom for you? If so, don't buy/play board games! If you think there is a lot of pack-away time, is the only other game you play Uno?
    It's a "Deck Constructor" game, you CAN make & keep a list of your decks. Has been a pretty common concept for such games for decades now. They even show & give examples in the core box!
    You don't "need" to do deck construction. Every Hero comes as a "pre-constructed" (and a LIST for later remake, if separated) which you CAN use. Sure, most consider the "deck construction" a key draw feature to the game, but it is an optional extra - a DAMN BIG optional extra I'll admit. And it can produce a lot of variety & re-playability. If you "want to, not do this", then yeah, I'd suggest a different game...like 'Sentinels of the Multiverse' (superheroes with fixed decks).
    Getting this as a "deck constructor" game as opposed to another game is similar to going and buying a 2T truck when you just wanna use it go park in the underground shopping mall when I go alone and shoulda bought the small hatchback. Sure they are both cars...but have different functions & features. Same, don't buy a multi-meeple placement game when you just want a very casual game of Uno.
    And 'math'. Well it is only basic early primary school level math - like THE VAST MAJORITY of games. Nothing complicated.
    I hope you don't struggle with that. If you do, playing games with friends 'can' be a good way to help if done well.
    Not sure what game you guys were describing in your "just numbers & colours"...sounds a "little" off in general. Or maybe you did a REALLY intense dual-deck combo deck-construction session to be bouncing that many mods - great you enjoyed the in-depth options of deck-building, but it ain't so at the "basic level".

    btw im one of the option 3 but i have been in since the start and have been able to gather gradually i have played enough of it to be able to make a deck that will win quite quickly and some times will keep them like my fav spidey justice deck lol as u know i only play true solo and i have been stuck in the galaxys most wanted campaign for ages even with starlord so im deciding im making a dirty leadership deck for my next run lol the way i tend to describe the difference between ahlcg and marvel is that marvel makes u feel powerful and arkham makes u feel weak marvel is more card game arkham is a card based board game i do both lol but i collect arkham slowly a cycle at a time because of availability.

      1. They don't really like Marvel.
      2. They don't like calculating and having to think
      3. They want a game that they can play with a 4 year old.
      4. They pretend to not know what LCG stands for.

      6. They don't like deckbuilding... IN A DECKBUILDING GAME!

    I think that the main problem here is that you believe that you need everything in order to play the game. I personally dont own marvel champions but i have played tcg's my whole life. You dont need every single card ever printed to enjoy the game. For the past 10 years i have played the same deck in MTG ocassionally updating it when a new cool card that fits my deck comes out. Same goes for the other tcg's i play. No thousand dollar investments.

    I think you don't like the game at more than 2 players because you don't like deck building. Making deck with a specific role instead of trying an all rounder deck make the game a lot more enjoyable at 3-4 players. You spend a lot of time trying to coordinate with other players to get the best of each roles.

  • @bjj_9925
    @bjj_9925 Před 2 lety

    I love your content but the part of "Too Much Stuff" is just wrong. Yes, there's a lot of stuff now and getting everything is VERY expensive. But why do you assume that EVERYONE will want EVERYTHING including expensive storage solutions? Like... what?
    This is the cheapest LCG you can get into, by far. The Core Set is pretty solid according to everyone, and you can get the heros/scenarios/villains you're only interested in. For example, I couldn't care less about Valkyrie so I'll never buy that specific hero, same thing with many others. It's not like Arkham Horror where you have to spend 120usd to have the complete cycle/campaign.
    Most people will buy their favourite heros and villains, and that's pretty much it, after 4 or 5 big expansions they'll realize they have a ridiculous amount of content and stop there. You make it sound like buying into the game is signing a blood contract with FFG.
    It's like saying that Spirit Island costs more than 200usd because you HAVE TO get all the expansions plus the Broken Token storage solution, which costs more than the game.
    LCGs can get expensive yes, but not everyone is a collector.

    And those are the perfect reasons why I'll never play this game big meh for me
    I played 3 lcg already I had enough its just a worse mixed version of Lotr and arkham horror which both also sucked for me

    Good video but I gotta say the guy in the hat is made for the CZcams environment, goo charisma, well spoken, articulate enough to get to the point quickly. Guy with the glasses was cringe, sorry. Basically every awkward dude at the gaming store. Kinda distracted from the main point of the video but overall I think I agree with the major points brought up here

    You could just buy someone else's collection on the web.
    And it's best at 3 players. What kind of lone neckbeard plays a board game solo except for playtesting? 😄

    You forgot the most important reason not to play. It's made by FFG
