In 1985, Penn State had the inside track to the National Championship. But they lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma snagged the National Championship undisputed when Miami lost in the Sugar Bowl. In 1986, both Penn State and Miami had revenge on their minds for what happened in 1985. Miami defeated Oklahoma enroute to the Fiesta Bowl match against Penn State. But Penn State finished the job in 1986 and Miami came up just short. In 1987, Miami was still searching for their National Championship. To make it to the top, they had to beat Oklahoma. They did. In the end, these 3 programs each grabbed a National Championship. Miami would dominate in 1988 and 89 and prove to be the Team of the Decade. Penn State would have up-and-down years in 1987, 88, and 89 following their run of dominance through 1986.
@@MGAF688 He was an epic washout. Didnt want to work at all. Was neurotically afraid of injury to the point of absurdity. A giant waste of a generational talent.
I love the wishbone offense, but it needs a viable passing attack to make it go. The quarterback needs to give 100 plus passing yards a game. Alabama ran the wishbone the best under Bear Bryant. They were able incorporate a respectable passing game within it. Oklahoma had much better athletes, but were never able to do this.
I actually have a memory of this game and it was personal/ The previous summer my family had gone on vacation to Washington D.C. and when we stayed in Washington PA for a night we met a Penn St student who was a student trainer for the football team. When we saw this matchup my family wondered if she was working on the sidelines that night as she was a very nice young lady(I’m guessing she was 21 or 22 at the time)
You also were a fan of Notre Dame, Miami, Nebraska, Florida State, and USC. You must have been torn a lot. Now you are a fan of Bama, Georgia, Clemson, Auburn, and sometimes Vandy.
Two of the greatest LBs ever in college football, Shane Conlan and Brian Bosworth.
This was the only game Penn States QB John Shaffer ever lost. He went 66-1 from 8th grade through college. Pretty amazing record
you should mention “as a starting quarterback”. that’s an important distinction/fact you’re failing to mention
@@markjackson6431 I was thought that was implied.
@@ruckanitepreacher5618 right, we’re suppose to read minds
As a 16 years old born in 2006, this is absolutely fascinating. Jim Harbaugh still in college, Barry Switzer as a college coach.

Marcus Dupree should've been in this game.
He already had turned pro.

Offensive linemen were so skinny then 😭😭

Is it physiologically possibly to have a more boring uniform than Penn State’s road gear!?!
Looks like the prisoners' uniforms from "The Longest Yard".
@@lvpack5022 yea, and they were getting the prison shower experience from coach Sandusky ,hahaha.

I don’t mind the simplicity. It’s better than many of the atrocious uniforms of today.
@@afridgetoofar1818 that’s true, but today’s uniforms are so heinous you gotta admit it’s a pretty low bar!
