    Even though I believe it's possible for the nation's best team to come from a weaker conference, Washington should have been voted the National Champion for this season. I will say however, that BYU had some bad luck with PITT in its non-conference schedule starting the year ranked in the top-10 but ended up with a .500 record.

    • @josephciccolini1590
      @josephciccolini1590 Před 21 dnem

      The problem with Washington that year was that they turned down an invite to the Holiday Bowl. Had they played BYU they likely would have won and been #1

    • @rss83073SFBayArea
      @rss83073SFBayArea Před 21 dnem

      @josephciccolini1590 I don't agree - especially if Oklahoma had won the Orange Bowl over a big name school. Washington would have been passed over for the national title by Oklahoma as BYU wouldn't have been seen nationally as a viable opponent. This is something that happened a lot to Pac-10/12 teams not named USC or UCLA.

    • @josephciccolini1590
      @josephciccolini1590 Před 21 dnem +1

      @@rss83073SFBayArea Possibly. But Washington would have had a better record than Oklahoma and had lost to a better team (Southern California, which won the Rose Bowl). Oklahoma lost badly to Kansas.
      But yes, the voters seemed to disparage the West Coast teams in those days.

    • @christopherfoote4643
      @christopherfoote4643 Před 7 dny

      @@josephciccolini1590I don't think it was a problem. They played the best team they were able to. They shouldn't be penalized but they had the opportunity to play Brigham Young when Brigham Young was rated higher. Nobody knows what might have happened. It's a tad presumptuous to assume a win. Certainly that is a possibility. But I am not sure that's necessarily what would have happened. If they had accepted the invitation then we would know. But they didn't. That isn't a problem. It also puts Brigham Young in the position of having to defend their title. Moving forward. I think that's a good thing. I think it helped elevate the Western Athletic Conference. It was probably only about eight of eleven.

    BYU was a joke as a national championship, they barely beat a 6 and 5 Michigan team in the holiday bowl. Only the pull it out in the final minutes of the game. Washington was clearly the national championship that year but only because BYU's coach was retiring after 20 years

      Michigan was about the same in 1985 actually. They had Harbaugh but it is debatable whether or not that matters. Harbaugh was 3-2 as a starting quarterback in 1984.
      Chris Zurbrugg was 2-3. That lends some credence to Harbaugh being a better quarterback except that Zurbrugg was injured early. So wasn't healthy until the Holiday Bowl. And was 2-0 against Illinois. A team Bo Schembechler said was closest to Brigham Young. Harbaugh was 0-0-1. In my opinion that makes Zurbrugg a better quarterback. Harbaugh won more games. But it is disputable whether Zurbrugg wasn't as capable. Zurbrugg retired with a year's eligibility.

    • @christopherfoote4643
      @christopherfoote4643 Před 7 dny

      @@josephciccolini1590Actually they probably played the only team that wanted to play them. It doesn't really matter why. Michigan was a lot like Northwestern last season. Ipso facto. Northwestern defeated a decent Utah team.
      Utah was comparable to Penn State University. It was a strange season but there wasn't anything wrong about it being Michigan. Michigan was 6-6. That is good for a share of it. Iowa shares a title with Brigham Young University. 50/50. They are co-champions.

    So Bob Costas wrapped up the other New Year's Day bowls by showing a Houston highlight from the Cotton Bowl and OSU highlights from the Rose Bowl... even though both of those teams LOST their bowl games. That doesn't make a bit of sense. Doug Flutie (i.e. the current Heisman winner at the time) threw 3 touchdowns in the Cotton Bowl and... nothing? Way to always be pathetic in college football coverage, NBC.

  • @Stinkinbadgez
    @Stinkinbadgez Před 8 měsíci +1

    Sad part the Winner should have been National Champ. But they picked BYU that had a schedule that was so sickly weak. Every team in the WAC had 4 loses except BYU. WEAK WEAK. Played a 6 and 5 Michigan in the BYU Bowl (Holiday Bowl) . That is what brought about the change in college football. Started a computer rankings of teams because of that farce.

    • @christopherfoote4643
      @christopherfoote4643 Před 7 dny

      Not exactly. Definitely it impacted the way the championship was selected but Washington was invited to participate in the Holiday Bowl. I suspect other teams possibly, also and only Michigan accepted. Michigan being 6-5 isn't that relevant. Honestly, it demonstrates the capacity to win a title. Iowa was 8-4-1 and shares a title. It's because Wisconsin was 7-4-1. Pittsburgh was 3-6-2.
      Collectively that is 10-10-3.
      That is a wash. Brigham Young shares a title with Iowa.
      They played in 1991. F.W.I.W.
