I just met Murph at the show he does in Red River, NM. I am 61 and have been listening to him since WIldfire come out in what ...74? I have a brief dialog with him, and he is sure a great guy, and a great Christian, and he lives his beliefs. He take s a moment here and there to throw in his two cents worth on our values in this country, in caring for our world. He isn't a big climate change freak, it is just common sense. God gave this beauty to us and we need to take care of our beautiful earth. He has a beautiful heart and is a great man of God.
My 1st husband Monty McQueary worked for Michael in 1983 . He is a class act cowboy that has a heart of gold!! I had the pleasure of seeing him many times and love the memories.
My wife passed away 7 year's ago yesterday 4/6th/2014 she loved horse's and I hear this wonderful song i see her riding off up to heaven ❤ on a horse 🐎 to Jesus CHRIST waiting arms , she took her last breath with i and my children by her side ❤ miss her badly 🙏🙏🙏
Even though I was only 7 or 8 at the time, I remember being moved by this song. Not just from how it was sung, or by the beautiful melody, but I could tell both my Mom and Dad loved this song. They never said anything, but every time it came on the radio in our car, our entire family would go silent and just listen. It connects me to my family, when we were all young and all together. R.I.P. Mom and Dad. I love you.
I was only 4…but even so, I would become so emotional by this song. All I could think of was the connection between the girl and a horse. To this day I love animals, but this song began that love for me…
The 70s will never ever be bettered! The best music, people, and the greatest women!Life was easy, and less complicated, and we actually talked to each other!
I can't believe how this song is having an effect on me right now. Absolutely crying listening to the words and how beautiful it is and what it's about
I'm 36 was born in 1985 this song I will always love and as a child it brung tears to my eyes and still to this day tears fill my eyes this song I will never forget singing along too and I still do
May be the most beautiful American song ever written...With deep cultural ties to the land and its history with a poetic blend of incredible imagery, delicious music and a crescendo of words that will dazzle hearts and minds forever.
Mid-1970’s 3M (with same hippie hairstyle as this video) played this masterpiece at a Hillsborough St bar in Raleigh, NC. The mostly college audience was rude to him but he was professional & a virtuoso singer/guitarist. He earned my respect & admiration that night. He still has it!
My precious cowboy passed away 1 month ago tomorrow. He is with all the horses he ever loved. I walked into his celebration of life to this song. I miss him so much
Purely a beautiful and timeless song. I was around 11 yrs old when this hypnotic song came out. Murphey is a class act and has a heart as beautiful as this song. Times have changed and this song brings me back to a much simpler time in my life.
I know its been said over and over again but geeze where did the music go? I was born in 1984 and grew up listening to music like this from my mother who was in her 20s in the 70s. Wish times were still like these.
This is the best song ever written and wow how I wish I could go back to this time again. Michael Martin Murphey's voice, guitar playing and the piano is breathtaking...so Beautiful. So emotional listening to this song, brings me back to my younger years with my parents and family going on trips to the beach and growing up...RIP baby sis, mom and dad. Prayers for all :)
It was a cold winter day in St. Louis Missouri...i was just a. Little girl sitting in the back of mom and dads car...signing this song, but i still remember it to this day!
I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it in 1975 at 10 years old in a boys home in Monticello Arkansas (The Baptist Home) I'm 57 now and just happen to live in Lincoln Nebraska, I get Emotional every time I hear it.
I was so in love with the story of this song as a little girl that when my stepfather decided it was a good investment to buy a horse n ranch I named her Wildfire n when she had a colt I named him Spitfire
Then you had that abortion and it ruined everything. god dammit Ethyl, I wanted that boy, a son he was...that is until you and Doctor Stevens tore him from your filthy womb...god damn you to hell woman
Shelley Ball I was a little girl myself and when the hippies used to come on the beach are used to always request them play this song! The story is beautiful I cry when I hear it!
This song takes me back to when I was a little girl, lying in bed listening to my little plush dog (with a radio inside)... it made me cry then... it makes me cry now :) Love it!
This song tears into my soul it reminds me of all my dear pets that I have lost that I love so much that can never be replaced, this song is so underrated
I remember seeing Michael Martin Murphey perform this on "The Johnny Carson Show", and John Denver was sitting in for Carson as Host. The song was at that time, at its peak of popularity. John Denver commented at the time how impressed he was with the song. At that time John Denver was at the peak of his popularity as well. Such talent, we may never see again.
Just heard this song wafting through the air of our neighborhood! Michael is playing a benefit concert at the estate across the street. The dude can still sing like crazy!
I whole heartedly agree; piano strokes from heaven and then bam like a sunburst. I can listen to this repeatedly and each time it brings a new emotion.
my mom sung this to me as a little girl. my soul horse passed Friday on new years day. He was 27. It hurts. I feel empty. This has always been special to me even more now.
Beautiful song. Heard it on the intercom at Home Depot and thought wow haven't heard that song in 30 years! It's was so cool to see him sing it without lip syncing. Awesome!
Beautiful music at its best...how this song brings me back to times of growing up and making memories with family and friends ❤️ Love Michael Martin Murphey ❤️
Saw him perform last night 10/9/20 in The Woodlands, TX at Dosey Doe Big Barn, dinner, and a show. It was wonderful. He played for two solid hours solo. Small venue right up close. Definitely one of the greats. He spoke about his American wife. I read that they wed in 2017, and found some video of their indian wedding. Very nice. He was born and raised in Dallas, TX. Now has a working farm/ranch in Colorado which he's had for years. Said he bought it in the early to mid 80's. He was very open and honest. Says he only does shows now for charity, and for the love of it. Christian man too. He said to look up this video fro 76 to see his long hair. So here I am.
My mom recently told me this was her favorite song when she was a teenager. I've now listened to this song so many times and it has definitely become my favorite too!
I was probably a little girl when this was on,but my older siblings that would've been watching this were out partying and/or with the significant others.Sure my Dad was into Midnight Special, but my parents split when I was a toddler.I was into rock at a pretty young age,thou..wish I could've seen it back then.
Almost all of the acts on Midnight Special were as good as they get. A Wonderful Series! Well recorded for the time and the situation. Thanks for sharing!
Me too! Love it to this day! Such that, I have requested this be played at my memorial! There is none so good as this, and only wish songs of today could put one in a place as to remember and wish they were at that place again. What a loss for this now generation, all is loud and w/no meaning. Maybe one day, they will look back in amazement and realize, us old folks, really had it going on! Lots of good songs and artist that really knew how to sing and mean what they sang.
steeden54, Me too! Growing up on hippie music as a kid in the 60s and hard rock music in the 70s, I was never fond of country music with only a few very few exceptions. This is the biggest exception because this is a country song and this is my favorite song of the 1970s! It's still fresh and new today with hooks so deep that it will make you ache!
Great stuff. Hard to beat the music of that decade. There were several other " Country Rock" bands of that time period. Poco, Allman Bros. Pure Prairie league, John Denver's Eagles and Horses and Ponies are a couple of other great Horse related songs. Chestnut mare by The Byrds. If you like them you will like Bob Bennett. I'm 57 yrs old and this song still grabs my heart after all these years. I used to watch the Midnight Special as much as I could as a teenager. I simply love this song and I hope this younger generation today can appreciate songs as special as this. I can't think of any songs that are played on mainstream radio today that could possibly have the same impact 40+ years now. I guess I'm just too sentimental.
I WAS 16YRS OLD I REMEMBER THIS SONG SO WELL I WANTED TO RIDE AWAY ON WILD FIRE WERE BOTH GONA GO!! TOOK ME AWAY IN A DREAM FOR AWHILE. AWESOME TIME IN MY LIFE TO LIVE IN THIS GENERATION!!.
This song came out 2 and a half years before I was born, heck my parents were seniors in high-school. I heard it on the radio yesterday, it must have been 30 years or more since I've heard the song, now it's stuck in my head. Love it again!
Those of you who love this song from when you were growing up need to share it with the young people you love. Don't slash what they listen to, just introduce them to something you love. My love for Mozart's music didn't come with criticism of the music I loved, just an open door to hear something "new" (1790s were waaay before my time).
Annie's Song is my all time favorite song. It came out the year I was born. My mom is a huge John Denver fan and had the album. According to her, when I was cranky, she'd play Annie's Song and it would calm me down
I grew up in Western Queensland back in the 60s and i used to have wild brumbys come into my backyard. So beautiful. Love horses, the most beautiful animals in the world. So magnificent and proud.
One of the best songs ever written. And sang. I'm a country boy not a cowboy so I never had much to do with horses until I got hired as a youth counselor at a therapeutic boarding school for at risk youth. Where I became the team leader in the Hospice horse program in our equine department. Watching kids who were ex gang members from L.A. bond with these horses truly changed my life. I can tell you from personal experience. That horses are some of the most majestic animals on earth and our country would be 50 or more years behind where we are today if it weren't for these beautiful powerful creatures. Ride on Wildfire
I've been listening to different versions of this over CZcams and by far this is the best one I don't know how old i was when this came out but i am 55 years old and i was young back then and i still love this song it brings many tears to my eyes many many tears and many many memories also
This song played on the Bread station on Pandora today (one of my faves)- I had forgotten all about it. I had a minor meltdown and got really excited so I had to look it up here. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful song!
It's interesting to see how his appearance has changed over the years, and yet his vocals have improved with age, in my opinion....Love this song....always have, always will....sweet memories....
I was 9 years old in 1975 when this song came out. Sure do miss the 70s. Sad and ironic, on February 11th, 2021, my mare horse, "Storm," died. She was 30 years old and died from an illness. The ground was too frozen to bury her. I had to leave her in pasture, covered with a tarp.
😢 Remember as a young girl crying and singing this song outside as loud as I could for my sister who died in an accident to be a vet for horses. Still hurts. Still waiting for WILDFIRE!!!!
I was 18 when this song hit the charts. I was in love with the girl next door. But she was 14, and her dad would not let us date. She loved this song because 'Wildfire" represented our love which was lost in a blizzard of parental disapproval. At times I still miss Diane, and wonder how she's doing. Memories of Sacramento and the girl on Jonas Ave.
I was 17 when this song came out, I’m now 62 And I still love it and listen to it often. Greetings from Texas!

What I liked about this song was it's sense of peacefulness.

A bittersweet song that reminds me of that young horse crazy girl I once was

Wow, beautifully written comment, Dale. I agree.
Well said.

I was so in love with Michael Murphy, and that's it
Impressive performance. What a story and what a voice.
A song that always makes me think back to my youth. I could listen to this song 100 times a day....such an amazing tune!!!
I'm barely 26 and it reminds me of when I was younger. Seeing the generation who witnessed this era live pass away is heartbreaking.
me too! and it always and always will make me cry...
😢 Remember as a young girl crying and singing this song outside as loud as I could for my sister who died in an accident to be a vet for horses. Still hurts. Still waiting for WILDFIRE!!!!
I'm so grateful to grow up in the late sixties and seventies. Best music ever
Absolutely loved this since I was a little girl, I will always be a fan.
As years went by, he really perfected this song. Several live performances here on Utube are quite amazing.
Heard this song 35 years ago at a store I worked at on Cape Cod. I got rescued that summer like the singer dreamed off. Never give up,
I was 18 when this song hit the charts.
