    I have a public speaking course in college and for one of our assignment speeches I got to do a speech on a topic I was really passionate and very knowledgeable about. Maybe halfway through the speech I completely froze. I have really bad social anxiety. It felt like an entire minute. I just didn't know what to say! I was actually considering wanting to fake pass out just to get out of the situation! Somehow I managed to finish.

    My face starts to get red and twitches everywhere, then my voice shakes, then i start to feel myself want to cry or blackout. Its crazy because im such an extrovert, but still feel a massive panic attack coming on in front of a group of people

    I once made a public speech in English in front of a large audience. I got there early enough to practice beforehand and walk around the auditorium, stand on the stage and look around the empty seets where all the people would be sitting after a while. I was nervous at first, but soon I felt very confident. The speech went successfully; I got the first prize then. Alex, your teaching in this video reminded me of those young days. Now I'm a Japanese housewife living near Tokyo, I watch your video every day to get a lot of inspiration. Thank you for sharing💙

    Great tips. I have stumbled upon several of these points through my own experiences. I am so glad "practice like crazy" is top of the list because my colleagues look at me like I'm crazy when I request 8 hours to rehearse a standard 45-minute presentation.
    The tip to visualize the first 30 seconds *as all positive* I hadn't thought of. This is fantastic advice. Managing that anxiety peak (30 seconds before the start until 30 seconds after) is really crucial for me.

    Rerecently I was appointed to read some lines in a book so I had to get up and speak to the whole class, when i started my friends told that they coudn't hear anything so when I started to speak louder my voice started shaking and cracking up I was extreamly nervous beacuse the whole class was watching. Thank you very much !

    I remember watching this video before I closed a premium long-term project! Even if the meeting is only via zoom, my client is an organization so there were still like 5-6 of them. It was so nerve-racking at first but I have equipped myself with Coach Alex's techniques and yeaaah, it went smooth! :) I'm a former teacher ( I only taught for a year 5 years ago). Yas..It was a long time ago that is why I always watch videos and train myself to regain the confidence I lost. Again, we appreciate you so much Coach Alex. You are helping us a lot. :)

    I have to do daily stand ups with the team and no matter how hard I try, my voice gets shaky after the second sentence then I'm so nervous I run out of breath while speaking. So I always try to cut myself short, but sometimes I have more to say. It is very frustrating

    Good points regarding focusing on the Message and Audience, a good balance should be had. I would also keep some personal focus to ensure you remind yourself of your delivery such as body language, eye contact, and your voice...rhythm, speed, volume, pitch, pause RSVPP.........Great video Alex, always something new to learn.

    I really want to say, thank you for giving me the tip on "Knowing your audience ahead of time". That really would help me with lessening my stress by knowing who I will be talking to before an interview starts.

      I use all of these tips personally and I have even looked up photos online of some of the key people I know will be there. Simply seeing their photos instantly calms me down when I'm speaking to a new audience.

    Deep breathing. I always say this in my mind, “smell the flowers, blow out the candles.” It helps to create sangfroid and refocus yourself. Like a breathing mantra.

    I think who your speaking to or with makes a big difference. I tend to feel intimidated by some of my co workers and when we have group meetings and have to speak publicly I become so incredibly anxious… I almost feel paralyzed and have trouble getting the words out. It’s an awful feeling.

    Yesterday, we presented our report to the class. I practiced a lot and even memorized it. But when it came time to speak, I couldn't get the right words out, and there were times when my voice shook. It was disappointing, but I'm still happy I managed to finish it, even though I was scared. Comparing how I am now to before, I was even worse. I guess it's an improvement, right?

    First of all, thank you, I love these videos and I love that you utilize cultural resources like you do in the videos commenting on public speakers and in the 'What is Character' video that uses Captain America and Loki as examples, I love that choice because I can even use that video to make a point to children who could use it as well.
    For me, numbers 2, 4, and 5 all seemed very related and also personally relate to me the most because most of my anxiety comes from the environment/ audience when I speak, meaning that typically I am aware enough to be mindful of the importance of my talking points and the clarity of my message, but I most typically fall short by forgetting to consider the pressure of the moment of speaking.
    Recently I was speaking to my boss about something that really shouldn't have made me nervous, I had a valued point and I was by no means going to get in any sort of trouble for what I was saying, it was a very candid and pleasant conversation except that due to my perception of the power dynamic, my leg was shaking like something out of a cartoon. I knew exactly what was going on and suffered through it, but it was still a huge sign to me that it didn't matter how strong I felt looking in the mirror because under pressure I could hardly speak. Ultimately, my message got across, but basically, at least for the short term, I felt about as big as an ant, and ironically, like I said this was a very candid and human conversation.

    Very useful video, valuable information. Right away I can tell where I go wrong as I usually focus on myself as opposed to audience and message. When I'm trying to calm myself down I breathe in through nose and out the mouth 😂 I was getting myself pumped up than relaxing. Thank you Alex

    I gave a presentation today and couldn't perform the way I had planned. I got so nervous that I forgot everything I was to say and f**d up the entire thing. I was so nervous to be seen as nervous XD. Maybe practicing 10x will help.

    Alex, have you heard of the "7's Rule" for calm-inducing breathing? If so, thoughts on its effectiveness? 🤔 i.e. Breathe in for 3 secs. Hold for 4 secs. Exhale slowly for 7 secs. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Controlled, steady breathing is the key component.

    Thank you Alex for sharing! Great tips. To answer the question about which of the 6 tips resonate the most, I would say there are four that I currently practice and two I will adopt...
    - I currently practice #1, #2, #3 and #6.
    - I will implement #4 and 5.
    Overall - I think #1 is the most important of the 6. I have a big townhall presentation coming up soon and I am putting a lot of focus on #1 now.

    I totally agree. I would even empahsize on the EXHALE with the breathing. And if possible maintain a 3 sec pauze after the exhale before inahling deeply and then exhaling fully again. The REST mode is what I use to start speaking and it creates a super calm speech. Then I open with standards, the things about the presentation. The low hanging fruits that get me used to hearing myself. And THEN I start the story from a collected frame of mind. I know where to start and where to end(preparation). And like you said once you get going, focus on the points that you make and make an effort to relate them to the audience. Make it feel like the story is about them. And it makes for engaging talks. Rather than a narration. Even though all the pieces are totally prepared, you make it feel like you are telling it to the audience for the first time.

    I have speech competition tomorrow but I am too scared . I wasn't ready to join in that. But my teacher said to join . At least for my teacher, I should speak well.

    I have such a fear publically speaking but the times I've had success is when I practiced. We have round table discussions at work and I get sooo nervous and feel like I bomb every time I do it while everyone is a rockstar in those meetings. I'm really trying to conquer this fear.

    for some reason each time i have a presentation, my heart rate spikes and i start sweating, and my voice changes, i feel so embarased but i cant control it, and the crowd is always people from work who i already know. i don't know how to overcome this

    As a 25 year old making videos for over 12 years, these 6 tips have really helped me out and one of them really showed me what I wasn't incorporating as much before. I will make those changes immediately now and practice them.

    I have to present my thesis proposal next week, and I'm nervous like crazy. Obviously, it's natural for everyone to feel this (the video here is for the average person), but for me as a very shy person and who has social phobia, I'm having a hard time at the moment , expecting what a bad presentation I'm going to have 😭

    And what do I do if it doesn't help?This year I've given about 5 presentations,I practiced them to the point that I knew every word I was supposed to say by heart,but during the final performance I always either ended up reading from the paper of reciting monotonously everything I've learnt or(when I didn't practice enough to know it by heart)forgetting easy words. What was more,I couldn't stop trembling standing in front of all those people not even mentioning keeping the eye contact with them.
    My English is close to C1 level but when I stand there I struggle to find words and even pronounce them 😢

      I hear you. Memorizing every word is usually going to lead to poor results like you experienced.

      It seems harder at first but leads to much better presentations.

    Hi Alex. Could you help with something? I've seen these tips WORK WELL in music performances in my past. Also in the recording studio. They translate perfectly into other types of "presentation," other than public speaking. My caveat: Where I've found that I totally freeze, get mental blocks, and lose mojo is when an audience is ABSENT. For instance, attempting to record podcasts on a mic or talk into a camera, as you're doing. Any tips that you might have would be greatly appreciated! God Bless!

      I do quite a bit of that type of talking (camera and/or microphone). I don't have any tips about freezing, per se. But, what works for me is having a clear outline or script, and a healthy dose of pretending. There's a bit of acting I do anytime I'm alone. I have to pretend I'm talking to an actual person. I even picture a real person instead of the camera. I imagine that that the microphone is more like a phone and somebody is listening. I picture what the final product will look like and sound like and I visualize somebody watching it and listening to it on their computer. I don't have any "magic" tricks or "hacks," though. I've heard other creators say very similar things. They just do a bit of acting and pretending. AND, use a script or nice outline.

      @@alexanderlyon You actually did provide tips here, without meaning to, Alex. Thank you. Some of the things you've suggested ARE great ways to stay focused and to bring in the "personal" factor to what seems to be a very impersonal process. I think that's the crux for me, in my asking. Again, thanks. I'll keep trying, while adding in your examples.

    I'm here after giving a really bad presentation and I feel ashamed of myself cause I wasn't able to even finish a single paragraph and that Professor really broke my flow as he interrupted me and after that I was stuck on single word and was stuttering.
    HELP I want to be as fluent as I'm alone 😔😔

    Hi Alex, I used to be a good speaker but now I have PTSD and as soon as I have to speak I get blotchy red all over my neck and face. Other than using all these tips and practicing, do you think it would be appropriate to acknowledge this to put people at ease that I'm okay?

      Hi, Doris. I typically don't recommend tell your audience you are nervous or anxious. Once you say it, it'll be the main thing your listeners are thinking about while you share your message. Instead of putting listeners at ease, I think it would draw their more attention to it and draw their attention away from your main message. It might make them more empathetic toward you as the speaker but that still puts their focus on you and not your message. I think the fact that it's being caused by PTSD is another issue. I don't have any experience with PTSD or any experience coaching people who struggle with it. If I gave advice on that, I would be speaking outside of my area of expertise. If I were you, I'd likely seek out a professional who has success helping people with PTSD. I don't know much about it personally but I've read and heard that it can be treated successfully with therapy. If it were me, I would likely enlist my therapists support and guidance to help me use public speaking as a way to overcome some of the sharpest edges of my PTSD. But, honestly, I can't emphasize enough that I'm not a professional in that area. I'm just speaking now as a regular person.
