All of the accommodation and other issues in the armed forces goes back to at least the 1990s (I left the Army in 94), when the government or MOD decided in their infinate wisdom to Outsource pretty much all accommodation. This included all the messes (Officers, Sergeants and Other Ranks) maintenance and, feeding all ranks within. Prior to this we had Long Service soldiers that would ensure that all accommodation, including married quarters, were well maintained and any issues were rectified in a timely manner. I am so glad that I left when I did!

As a young man I listened to Uncle Bill who was an SOE and then a Palastine Policeman. He spoke at length regarding the Tories. I found it hard to believe at that time, but I fully understand now. my son is a Royal Marines Commando, and as the saying goes you don't join for the money, a good thing though is they put you through your car driving test ,7,5 tonne driving test and HGV test, all these are done within a few months after passing out, his bedroom wall was covered with royal marines posters when he was in school, so as Parents we have to support his decision on joining up and congratulate him for passing the longest and toughest course in the Military.
in this time 2024 .. we should not need a military, ... we should have achieved ,, civilisation, .. sadly that is not the case

we've always had a mil budget of 2.5% except when the tories came in and reduced it to 2%, i might add that we dumped military hospitals in 1990/1 which freed up a massive amount of money, without adding additional to the NHS budget, who were left to pick up the 'slack' of each and every war since 1990

I spent 9 years in the Royal Air Force in the 80's and at only one base, out of 4, did I have my own room and that was in excellent condition. That was at Digby in Lincolnshire when I was in the Signals division. The other accommodations were dire and dingy. I guess nothing has changed.

I worked with a woman who completed 30 years service. She described how, where she was stationed in either Iraq or Afghanistan, the US military base adjoining the UK one had a great big McDonalds, but the UK soldiers were instructed by their superiors that they were not allowed to use it. Brits were also made to participate in some sadistic-sounding exercises - not sure whether the US adopted the same "tactics." The impression I got was that the British Army is more puritan in its indoctrinations.
Yeah, we were banned from using the PX when visiting the US sectors, alright for our officers and SNCOs though. My advice? You want to get f**ked about, treated like dirt, talked to like a moron, take the blame for a cock up that somebody with a higher rank did, get endless duties, work weekends, get no thanks, poorly paid and have people pull the upper class card on you at every opportunity? Join up

I’ve worked in some of the accommodations and have been shocked to see the squaller troops have to live in,single glazing in listed buildings 😳,Awful.

I liked our first house. But the council wrote off the park at the end of the road with old peoples homes anyway. and grandparents should stay with families!!😢😢 Builders make profit.... Shure they build houses small so that then they can build more. 😢😢😢 Rather than just build decent.
Even now they built nasty "bigger houses" still write off countryside spots. Rather than better ideas and designs.
The community should be more involved.

I'm an engineer, Aerospace no less, and I have more recently been offered opportunities to work in the arms manufacturing base here in the UK. Some make bullets, some make missiles, but regardless all are products designed to kill. It is becoming apparent that they now require more people to make them. A ramp up in production so to speak.
But when I look up into the sky and I see a beautiful A380 fly overhead, I still feel immensely proud of my contribution. What a magnificent engineering achievement. It's as wonderous as looking at an ancient Egyptian pyramid to me. It brings happiness to people. However, what sort of feeling would I be expected to feel if I saw images of dead women, children, and men? It certainly wouldn't be one of pride knowing that my efforts had contributed to such a tragic and bloody outcome. It would be sadness, horror, and disgust at myself. So, hence, I shall resist the silver thrown at my feet to tempt me, and I shall desist from considering any such engagment in order to feather my own nest at the expense and to the detriment of those poor human beings.
Good thinking . A good life begins with peace in the heart .
So lets put them in 5* hotels then. Gotta be better than what they're leaving behind.
