Pete Seeger has always been big on audience participation. I read one time he played a show where he was given a list of his songs he wasn't allowed to sing. Back in the days he was blacklisted. He went onstage, explained the situation, and the whole crowd sang every song while he accompanied them.

Arlo Guthrie is the son of legendary folksinger Woody Guthrie. Bob Dylan moved to NYC in the early '60s expressly to visit Woody in his convalescent hospital in NJ where he was dying from Huntington's. He would sing and read to Woody (Woody had no idea who he was) several times a week and Arlo would bump into him by his father's bedside. Supposedly, Dylan gave Arlo his first harmonica lessons. They had a short-lived friendship through the '60s as Arlo grew to adulthood. So, yes, Dylan was really more of a musical mentor to Arlo than his own father. Thanks Dave and Harri.

Arlo Guthrie's concerts are well known for his stories as much as his songs. For quite a while he had a great one about Alice's Restaurant that only Boomers will understand these days. He liked having fun with the fact that the song is 18 minutes 34 seconds long and the gap in the Nixon Watergate tapes just happens to be 18-1/2 minutes long. "Of course, Nixon didn't want people to know he listened to Arlo in secret".

Story of a train named "The City of New Orleans." Trains in America are given names, not sure if that's done everywhere or not. This is the story of this train, and it's weekly rout from New Orleans on up to to the northern Upart of the United States. Carrying mail, passengers, and rail cars full of different cargo along the journey. Great Americana song, about this train's long history starting in the 1930s. I think this is such a great song about this old long lost history of trains, and their importance to a very young America.

Most trains in Europe are named by their route or destination just like trains in the US. City of New Orleans, Rock Island Line are both destination names of trains in the US that had songs named after them. Probably the most famous in the world is the Orient Express which ran from Paris to Shanghai. As of the early 1990's it was still running because I took it from Paris to Budapest. Another famous one is the Flying Scotsman that runs between London and Edinburgh. I have been on that one too as well as the Caledonia Sleeper which runs between Inverness and London

Who knows how many other songs he might have written! His own version was sung differently! After Arlo Guthrie recorded his song, Mr. Goodman never sang it himself without thanking Arlo for paying his rent( with the royalties)! It is the best written song about the railroad! If you listen to the song, it sounds and feels like the sound of a railroad moving! The only comparable song that I know of is Gordon Lightfoot's " The Canadian Railroad Trilogy", which is beautiful!

If you want to take a unique adventure get an Amtrak multi ride pass and ride the City of New Orleans from Chicago to New Orleans. With a multi ride pass you can get off to do the touristy stuff and when you are done you just catch the train again. The route follows the history of music in america from orchestra and the blues in Chicago to the blues of Beale Street in Memphis to the birthplace of jazz in New Orleans. It will be 900 miles of musical history and a rare view into how america used to be. Taking the train in a lot of cases is like taking the old back roads instead of the interstate. You get to see America’s back yard in all its details. Just like in the Wizard of Oz not always pretty but always interesting and informative as to how america is behind the curtain.

Thanks for doing the live version , Arlo is one of those musicians that both feeds off of the audience and can play equally well to an empty room .

John Denver tells a funny story about also knowing the composer but getting to record it 2nd to Arlo and being "pissed off" since Arlo had a big hit with it. I love Arlo so so much and wait for reactors to get to him. I've been to see him numerous times also saw Pete Seeger many times and those two have legendary concerts together including at Carnegie Hall

Arlo is a great story teller. Only saw him live once about 1970-71 in Montreal. That time
he only played guitar. Didn't know he plays piano too. You should listen to "The Pause of
Mr Claus" and "The Motorcycle Song".

everybody knew all the words, even pete !!!!!!

Arlo is a true minstrel, and his concerts were full of stories. I've seen him dozens of times, starting as a young child when my parents would bring me to his shows, and up to a couple years ago when he retired. Bob Dylan's (especially early) singing style was heavily influenced by Arlo's dad. If you really want to hear Arlo sound like Dylan, check out his cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man". I like it better than the original. He tells a pretty good story before that song too.

This version is in G--a half step higher than the studio version in F sharp. I actually like this version better--perhaps because I often sing in that register and transpose songs there.
