    Hello Dr. Greger. I'm a recent subscriber and purchaser of your latest book "How Not To Die". Your research is fascinating and very informative. You have talked about important death preventing nutrition and reversing various diseases. I was wondering if you could speak on something less important but still applicable to your line of work. Can you PLEASE make a video on the topic of muscle building on a whole food plant Based diet? There's a lot of mistrust in the Fitness community. People are still saying to get 1gram of protein per pound of body weight, and other strange bro science such as that. Most of your subscribers might be into preventing and/or curing diseases but I don't believe I'm the only one searching for the proper eating routine to successfully add muscle mass THE CORRECT WAY. Hope this message reaches you, I know I could trust someone with your background to provide the proper information on such a topic.
    Many Thanks!

      I can at least speak from my own experience: I'm 22 and I've been following Greger's recommendations for about a year now, while also doing muscle exercise and cardio 3-4x a week.
      I have to admit I do gain muscle less quickly as before because I consume less protein and have less IGF-1 flowing through my body (which is a good thing, but it does slow down growth of all sorts of course), but at the same time I am also losing some fat. I'd say it's quite hard to become a competitive bodybuilder following this diet, but you can definitely get ripped. It's up to you. I'm not really after getting huge, but I've been happy seeing myself progress. I've lost fat and gained muscle, is all I can say. In more visual terms: I think you can totally expect to reach a bit of an athletic dancer/pilates guy look, but not some nordic strongman type look.

      @lucabt1990 Před 7 lety +2

      I'm following Dr.Greger's recommendations and I just gain the same amount of muscle I used to before I switched diets. Why would you gain less muscle? IGF-1 does NOT give you an advantage concerning muscle growth! Just consider that pro bodybuilders take insane amount of growth hormones, but it does not really affect gains that much, rather recovery. And if we remain in the natural IGF-1 range you won't feel any different because you stick to a WFPB diet.
      If you're losing fat you're probably not eating enough calories. Start tracking calories and eat 3000+ calories on a daily basis. A diet based on Greger's recommendations does its job if you feel full and don't consume that many calories, but as a bodybuilder you have to.
      Concerning protein, if you want to build muscle you only need 1.1g - 1.5g protein per lean body mass (KG). If you eat 3000+ calories and you're including beans, nuts, whole grains and some soy you won't be able to eat less than that amount.
      So if you manage to track your calories and you're willing to eat a lot you're all good man. People who claim you can't build muscle on a whole foods plant based diet have no idea what they're talking about or just don't consume enough calories, because they don't track their intake.

    So, as I thought, basically green tea consumption is either benign or only mildly beneficial. No need for anyone to start drinking green tea by the liter. I think it's safe to say there is no miracle food. The only thing you can do to minimize your risk of dying prematurely is to exercise lightly and regularly and to consume unprocessed plant-based foods.

      First of all caffeine in or of itself is not innately bad. Second off that one in the green tea is balanced with the L-theanine so it neither causes the jitters nor does it cause the psychological dependence.
      It's as effective as chlorhexidine when used as a mouthwash, and two cups a day are actually as effective as "mild" synthetic anti anxiety medications.
      It's a superb thing, the only down sides is the pesky preparation, where you need to pour the water of 75'C over it to get the best of it.
      Obviously it's not advisable to take over 4 cups per day.
