I have an older brother who has schizophrenia as well, he didn’t consume alcohol or drugs but I was never really scared he’d do something strange. He was hurting and confused, I could remember all these years later how I’d sit with him all night, for multiple nights, when he thought people were going to come in the house to kidnap us. We were pretty young and my mother eventually figured out something was up with him and was able to get him help. Mental illness can be very scary for a parent but I know it’s worse for those going through it.
The story about Austin is so interesting because both this and the Ballen videos seem to tell half the story (that we know about), but the two together you get a much fuller picture of how Austin’s mental decline came to be…which still leads me to wonder, how in the world did the parents just watch his mental decline and not do anything about it until his psychotic break.
Yes, you are right. If you combine both stories into one, you get the full picture of Austin's mental breakdown.
I think that, from personal experience, when you're confronted with a mental change in a family member that's gradual and not immediate, especially when it's changes between them being okay vs them having abnormal behavior, you convince yourself it's not that bad even though it clearly is. From that phone call, it's clear the family doesn't have any experience it terms of family friends or family members who they've had to admit to a mental hospital or care before. That's not to say what they did was okay but I put it to the lack of knowledge because to us their clear red flags when stated out loud but when you're living with that as a reality you think that you'll figure it out or that it'll go away. The truth being that it won't go away, and the person desperately needs professional help, especially when they exhibit signs of being a danger to themselves and others.
If you watch one of those 1+ hour true crime videos, they’ll give you an in-depth, more grounded look into these cases while YTers like MrBallen and Nick make it feel more creepy and fantastical.

Was he on drugs? Did that cause his erratic behavior? You never know I guess
You forgot Kidd that Austin was suffering for schizophrenia along with the alcohol and drug use really messed them up but doesn't excuse what he did to John and Michelle Stevens. Also I don't think that Austin did other drugs besides what they found in his system or what had been covered in the case.
I remember Austin from Mr Ballen, it schocked me how well looking and healthy person can turn into this
They were saying that there was nowhere near enough drugs in his system that would warrant his action

When I first heard of Austin I was so damn shocked that a person could not only this mentally damaged but also this physically strong that not even police canines or a cracked skull could stop him.

I know someone that hasn't been the same since he took drugs and we have no idea what it was or if he knew he was taking it he's just mentally gone.
