Pitt was absolutely haunting in this movie. Like a ghost rising off of the pages of a history book. Affleck was also quite fantastic. Love this movie forever with all my heart.
I agree completely! This film is such an underrated gem - and imho it is far superior to the two “westerns” that also came out that year. Pitt imho delivers his best performance in this film - so does Casey Affleck. Bob’s self-loathing combined with his realistic fear of Jesse is always registered right on Casey’s face - amazing acting.
He doesn't blink, despite the narrator telling the audience he blinks more than normal. This kind of deception is apparent throughout the entire film, I think, and, really, the first two minutes perfectly set up the remaining 158, down to the use of past tense in the final sentence: "He was 34 years old." Reads like a eulogy. Beautiful scene, beautiful film. So attentive to detail and thought-provoking as any.
Roger Deakins is a fucking master, and this is probably my favourite work of his. But even in something like Skyfall (which I thought was solid but not memorable) had incredible cinematography. Or Prisoners recently - Jake Gyllenhaal said that Deakins is very unusual for a cinematographer because he is very relaxed, not pushy and he even said "when roger films you, you feel as though hes doing nearly all the work for you"
Rooms… seemed hotter when he was in them….. rains fell straighter… clocks slowed… sounds were amplified. Such masterful dialogue in the narration. It captures the larger than life figure that Jesse James was. The background characters in this scene is just perfect. They are all blurry and out of focus. Like ghosts of a time long passed. This movie is an absolute masterpiece and is a must see if you appreciate great storytelling and cinematography. One of my favorite movies and the most underrated western of all time

Maybe the best opening scene, (and the best closing scene) for a movie ever. This film feels like a dream. But also staggeringly human, and has a truly genuine emotional core to every bit of dialogue, every shot, every note of music. Always recommending this to people. It’s just so contemplative. And it’s like dead on accurate too I live in Kansas and going up to Kansas City occasionally you still hear Jesse James stories it’s crazy, I actually knew a lady that her great great uncle was neighbors with Jesse James in St. Joseph’s Missouri he’s still a legend to this day

Brad Pitt owns this role. Probably there will be another Jesse James project that will be produced, but Pitt is the man because he brought Jesse back to life. A magnificent performance.

The train robbery scene is iconic as well. The unheralded hero in this whole movie though is Sam Rockwell turning in an absolute gem. Dominic also cast a few comedians in serious roles for some texture (guy from Parks and Rec and the guy from SNL)
This was the starting point of not a movie but a moment. A moment which you could cherish for long long time. What more can you expect from a movie? Once you have watched this movie its memory will remain with you till death such is the power of this movie.

The narrator in this opening scene is speaking lines directly from the novel, Ron Hansen's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Both book and film are equally haunting and masterful.

The thing is not that this is a movie. It's poetry. It's so against the run-and-gun fast paced type movies that are so popular today. It's beautiful. Beyond well done. Not only is it a realistic portrayal of actual events, but it does it with such simplicity and artistic ability. I will not say that people are too stupid to understand its artistic value, but man is it one of a kind. I find that its not winning Best Picture is an absolute sin of nature.

I'll never get tired of that narration, even if it is from an antiquated book with a slight flourish of exaggeration. It does a great job framing this film and setting its tone as a portrait of the more human aspects of James which are at odds with the fictional and mythical.
This is beautifully narrated. Seems to me Jesse could talk to anybody and be anybody an could acclimatise in anywhere place and time. Love this video of Mr Howard and thanks for putting it up here
The filming, the score, the true southern dialect depicted by the actors made seem as though we were looking through a window into 1881. RIP Sam Shepard. A Truley underrated film.
With Zodiac and Children of Men, this is one of the great underrated masterpieces of American cinema in the new millennium. Time will gives these great works the acclaim and recognition they deserve.
I loved it! It's flawless. I live for films like this. I'll leave the theme park Marvel movies to the masses. Very rarely there is a film I'll go to see in a theater. The last one was The Revenant.

I enjoyed every bit of this movie, and wished i could travel back in time to witness the old America. A good movie is the one you keep thinking about once you're done watching.

A parallel i never see spoken about this film is how heavy of an influence it has on rockstar games' Red dead redemption series. Hell, Jesse is wearing an outfit eerily similar to Dutch's throughout the whole film.

I was on set for 3 days filming in the mountains near Canmore, Alberta. Saw myself in the latter part of the movie. Awesome feeling.

Even when I watched this as a kid I knew I was witnessing greatness, that's how good this was

Not only is it a realistic portrayal of actual events, but it does it with such simplicity and artistic ability. I will not say that people are too stupid to understand its artistic value, but man is it one of a kind. I find that its not winning Best Picture is an absolute sin of nature.

I'll never get tired of that narration, even if it is from an antiquated book with a slight flourish of exaggeration.
It does a great job framing this film and setting its tone as a portrait of the more human aspects of James which are at odds with the fictional and mythical.

The filming, the score, the true southern dialect depicted by the actors made seem as though we were looking through a window into 1881. RIP Sam Shepard. A Truley underrated film.

@tlibber This has to be one of the most unusual movies i've seen in a long time. The way the director portrays the character is very mysterious. I enjoyed every bit of this movie, and wished i could travel back in time to witness the old America.

A great film. Nobody went to see it, which is pretty typical. Brad Pitt should be very proud of this film. It's a real achievement.
Like on of the most underrated movies ever... cinematography, acting and soundtrack is perfect, it's a pity that movies like iron man or xXx are better rated (iron man) or got way more recognition (xXx) then this masterpiece of a biopic

A parallel i never see spoken about this film is how heavy of an influence it has on rockstar games' Red dead redemption series. Hell, Jesse is wearing an outfit eerily similar to Dutch's throughout the whole film.
