    Put It in Neutral!
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Color excites me. Bright circus primaries as well as early morning grey fog at the beach. One just screams color! The other whispers neutral color. Then the focal point appears - a bright, solid color like a red light, a yellow raincoat or a green neon sign.
This BobBlast is all about neutral colors. How to make neutrals - why I like to use neutral colors in my paintings - and how to make your own Color Chart as a studio reference. This demo is about surrounding the strong focal point color with neutral complementaries PLUS white. This helps to reinforce a cohesive overall togetherness in your work, rather than a fragmented look or feel.
Neutral colors are made my mixing the complementary colors on a Standard, Universal Color Wheel. My Goof-Proof Color Wheel works as well as the Universal Color Wheel, as I adopt the concept of "color across the wheel" as the new complementary. I made my own color reference chart, showing what neutral colors can be easily made by mixing.
So, to dial back or tone down a color, add a bit of the "color across the color wheel" plus white - and there you have your own beautiful neutrals! If you practice your neutrals, you won't be parked in reverse!
Watch for a one-day online workshop with Bob about mixing neutrals and painting with neutrals!

I’ve learned more from a dozen of your “blasts” than from literally hundreds of videos over many years. That is no exaggeration. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever learned as much about painting in as short a time as I have from you. And with color in particular. Ive had a good handle on the basics of drawing, design, composition, values, and edge control but always found it a mystery as to how truly good artists came up with their vibrating and interesting colors yet always in a harmonious way regardless of the color scheme.
That you have no ego, are humble, and are so joyful (or fake it so well lol!) when you paint are just huge bonuses. Whether you do it to market your workshops or for the rewards of sharing your knowledge I don’t care and thank you. I only wish your videos came up in my feed years ago. You are a treasure.

Hi Bob! I just love this video! I have never before commented on your weekly Bob Blasts, but have been watching them religiously for the past, kind of guessing here, eight years. I have your Loosen Up workbook and your color wheel. I have always loved your abstract paintings, the ones like you have in this video, as well as the ones with figures. - I’m not sure why this particular video with neutrals is really speaking to me, I have to think about it, but let me just say a HUGE THANK YOU to you for all your generosity over the years. I often think about taking one of your workshops, but circumstances haven’t allowed for that. Maybe some day.... In the meanwhile, I will look forward weekly seeing you in your Bob Blasts!❤️🍷🎨👩🏻‍🎨

I loved that abstract, full 'o chromatic grays. That's what we learned to call them back in the color theory class in art school in 1976. To me it was a wonderful painting and then Bob put that fluorescent orange traffic sign color on it 😩
Well to each his own and Bob has created SO MANY WONDERFUL paintings that I love here on his CZcams channel!! And we know he's likely to paint over much of that orange anyway 🤣
So... I was in kind of a creative slump when I first ran into his channel a couple of years ago and since then I've painted myself into one of my most productive phases ever in my entire life! 👍🏻
My extreme creative output of late is due, to a great extent, to Bob's amazing teaching style, knowledge, positivity, and enthusiasm!
Bob makes painting fun, as it should be 😃🤣
Thank you great artist & teacher Bob Burridge for who you are & what you do, online & in the studio!!

Bob I totally enjoy your tutorials, you paint with such abandon and I hope to achieve that freedom from fear of “mucking it up” (someday)..

This gave me an idea for a back round for my black cat. I'm thinking greyed blue and purple. I like the strong color against the neutral. I like how you did your color mixing on a big scale. Thanks for the inspiration and instruction.
