    Terrific work with both the ride and the video, Katie! What a bonus to have encouragement painted on the road for you - a la TDF! For me, the widescreen stuff was the best. More of it in the future, if you can, please. 30% gradient - don't know how anyone manages that!

    It was lovely to meet you at foodstop 2 Katie! I was a few minutes behind you after that...saw the road message to you..nice touch from someone! I couldn’t get up Hardknott. I felt the need to zig zag the angle out of the nasty bits but needed the whole road without other riders and walkers everywhere. Hats off to those who just gritted it out and rode straight up...phenomenal strength. Fantastic day! Some of the views....wow!

    Well done Katie & Jay! I saw that road writing as I climbed up Hardknott & wondered if you had gone past it yet, didn't see anyone with a spray can of paint though! The whole day was awesome & the perfect weather was the icing on the cake. I was driving through Ambleside centre early evening on my way home & there was a lady wearing a Vegan top exactly like yours riding along, I passed her then she ended up riding behind me shortly before turning off. I did wonder if it was you.

  • @tonybmw5785
    @tonybmw5785 Před 4 lety

    The only problem with the Fred Whitton speaking as someone who lives on the route is it is in places very poorly marshalled around some villages, which lets a small but significant minority of riders get away with showing no respect for other road users especially pedestrians. That said I am glad it takes place I just wish the organisers would wake up and increase the signage on the roads intersecting the route and put them out a lot earlier then they do. I'd also like to see a increase the number of marshalls so that side roads around villages are manned with people warning riders of pedestrians, because I knew the event was on and still had to hop up on to a wall to avoid getting wiped out by a pair of cyclist riding two abreast whizzing through my 20mph speed limited village at a speed that would cost a car driver their licence. I understand (from also being a cyclist) that maintaining momentum is important, but when you are cycling through villages with no footpaths and narrow roads the speed limit is there for a reason and should be respected even if coming down the into the hill will let you do (even on my 30 odd year old push bike) 40 mph! Events like the Fred Whitton take place because locals don't object and all it would take is a child or a young family to get hurt in or around a village by someone taking part and you would all loose what is a smashing event.

    • @tonybmw5785
      @tonybmw5785 Před 4 lety

      @@cumbrianrider8903 I'm not disputing that and I hate to see the event closed down. What l am saying is it needs to be better organised and marshalled while it is taking place. Sooner or later an accident involving a bike at speed and a pedestrian is going to happen unless the organisers pull their fingers out and put marshalls on the outskirts of the villages they go through telling riders to expect pedestrians. The Fred Whitton takes place on open roads and that means the safety of pedestrians who are also using the roads needs to be a priority, and at the moment it is not.

    The guy with the single pannier climbing the hill of doom @7:16 wants to stick a bag on the rack *behind* him in his slipstream. It's measurably less drag, a rectangular pannier to the side is about as bad as it gets for drag, over 112 miles that's going to make a difference [when not climbing hills of doom]. It's not like it looks totally full or anything?

      We had a mini heat wave last year which made the climbs a real challenge especially Hardknott pass

      Thanks, hello to the lovely Cyprus. I visited Kyrenia a few years back and it was stunning! We went up to St Hilarion castle! Absolutely stunning!

    Could have given you a Jennings to sup at the end. Proper local Lake District brew. Gratz on completing the Fred Whitton

  • @thebikepackingadventurer

    How did this compare to other challenging rides you have done? Was supposed to do this last year but now it’s next year. Looking forward to it, but also bricking it 😂.

    Good job Katie! Wow those endless straight climbs without hairpin turns must be very painfull. Must be hard to get into a good climbing flow.

      Yeah I think mentally it makes them tougher as you know there's not rest coming up haha.

    Good effort! Love that you got some road graffiti! Those cows were amazing - I almost stopped to take a photo, but my mates were already a far enough ahead of me. :D They kindly waited a few times for the old man. Lovely day for it wasn't it? I passed you somewhere after Fangs Brow - didn't recognise you. I think if I'd seen the "VEGAN" jersey it might have twigged, but I didn't notice it. Maybe next time! :D

    Hi Katie, I rode Hardknott today ice on the ground in parts. Your name is still clearly visible on the ground , by coincidence when I was looking at the ride beforehand last night on youtube this video was one I watched so I knew what the name related to when I saw it.

      Ahhh you absolute beast riding up it today - with ice on the roads!! It’s bad enough gripping the road in dry weather! Well done!

    Brilliant video, stunning photography and smart edit. Really enjoyed it. My only tiny, tiny, totty gripe I have is as with a lot of vloggers, please take your shades off when doing pieces to camera. I know it's not always possible if grabbing a quick shot.

    big well done you two :) , I've hiked and driven up and down those passes and they are proper hard work ( let alone riding a bike up them ) , it's 5 stars from me ;)
