In the past 6 months I've lost 25 kilos, which is just what I have needed, to finally chase that dream which I had since I was a teenager. I have wanted a proper road bike since I was 14 years old, but it was not allowed. My mother decided that it was out of the question because it was "not for girls"... god forbid I'd get into something so un-ladylike! Well, this year I'm turning 49, so 35 years later, I have finally bought that much longed for road bike! I've started riding it tentatively, every second day, riding around 15K... and I am fully planning to get fit before I hit 50! (And to hopefully shed the last 5-10 kilos in the process). Your videos have been a great inspiration so far, and I've also been able to learn from them in terms of what clothing to buy, etc. Thank you for sharing all of it with the world!

I'm a 75 year old cyclist who can't now cycle up to the top of the bank I live at the bottom of.
I used to cycle 50 miles a day to work and never found a hill that defeated me up to the age of about 65.
    Don't get old.

I second that ebike recommendation. I’m the same age as you and my ebike allows me to choose how much assistance I get from the battery. Cycling is still an absolute pleasure.

I agree with the ebike suggestions. I'm a mere 60 year old but at the moment, due to a ruptured disk, I'm a a little incapacitated. Hopefully I'll fully recover my but if I'm faced with a choice between ebike or no bike...ebike wins for sure.

I hadn't ridden a bike in many years, until my sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I took a bike to raise money for cancer research and awareness. My first charity ride was a Livestrong Ride. I now ride to raise money for Autism Awareness and research. My son is on the spectrum and riding is very good for him. It help us connect.

Story time: One fact about and why I have a love/hate relation to biking. When I was 5 years old riding on the back of my mothers bike (too big for a kids seat) my foot got caught on the rear wheel of the bike and the spokes burned right through my shoe and halfway into my heel until touching bone. Remember the smell of burnt flesh and tearing up; so painful. Doctors (in Sweden) told my mother there was no saving my foot and they wanted to amputate the whole foot before the gangrene spread further up my leg and they had to amputate even higher up. My mother stopped them and told them she was also a nurse (in the old country; Chile where we were from) and said she would cure me, they gave her all the assistance and materials needed. For one summer I got all the attention from mother to mend my foot. I did a full recovery and ended up playing football the very next summer. -- I have a scar on my heel, my Achilles heel, sometimes still painful, and sometimes it 'cracks' open but heals nicely again. -- Now I cycle every day and never really gave it up even though it almost took my foot.

I'm still scared, but every week is better than the previous one, and I hope, one day, to get to the top of a hill feeling as happy as you.

Getting into cycling is one of the best things that I ever did. It eventually helped me, at the age of 30, to get over an eating disorder that I'd had for 15 years of my life. I'm coming on 48 now and am absolutely so grateful to finding cycling. I'm now fully recovered from the anorexia and binge eating which stopped me living my life to the full.

    @BrianDukes Před 3 lety

Hey Katie, love these open and honest videos! Keep up the good work.
A few facts about me (entering into the sport of this, but possibly not 10):
    - I’m a LEFTY too! Never describe myself as caggy-handed or anything like that, to me being a LEFTY is natural
    - When I left school I wanted to be a Dental Surgeon, even arranged to be put on work experience at a couple of Dental surgeries - but in the mid-80s (yes that ages me) I discovered I was really good with computers, so switched to becoming a software developer.
    - ART is a big part of me, these days mostly in the form of photography, but previously I’ve drawn, I’ve painted and even thrown pottery (which I really enjoyed)
    - Following the ART theme, as a teenager I painted murals on my bedroom wall - even got commissioned by a few families to paint murals on their children’s bedroom walls
    - As a teenager I used to cycle 50miles every day without fail - stopped cycling when I got married and settled down .. worse thing ever!
    - In my late teens I was observed cycling around Halesowen Velodrome by a British coach, who’d commented on how strong I was cycling - I could of taken this further, but couldn’t see how you’d survive as a cyclist in the mid to late 80s.
    - January 2020 I took up cycling again (got the bug), it was as a means of exercise to try to help me loose weight so that I could do a charity parachute jump. Apparently I was over 2stone too heavy to do the jump, so told the parachute company to take my money and I’d make the weight! I lost 3stone in weight, however due to COVID the parachute jump didn’t happen and then the jump company went out of business taking my deposit with them. Alas due to illness and work stress, some of that weight has crept back on. But as soon as I’m well again I’ll be pushing myself hard!
    - For the last 8wks my heart has been in AF (Atrial Fibrillation) - my fitness level has plummeted even cycling on Zwift is tough - but I’m pushing myself, getting out of breath and being dizzy for several hours afterwards, it’s been safer riding indoors - but can’t wait to get back to normal - hate being like this!!
Anyhow enough rambling - keep up the good work!! B

I have always been fascinated by bikes. I crashed over handle bars landed on my chin trying to ride with no hands as a kid. Mum said not allowed to ride a bike anymore. What did I do?
As a teenager borrowed a mates bike and was knocked of by a car. Gravel rash, dare not tell mum. 2 days later police knock on door. Driver got my name and reported it. Grounded!!
Move on to adulthood, in my early forties got a bike, learnt to swim front crawl, did Triathlons for circa 5 years. 2005 diagnosed with throat cancer. Recovered but got divorced which put an end to triathlons and biking. Roll on 15 years, lockdown 63 years old got back into biking again. It's never left me, still love it, keeping me sane. 120 Zwift miles last week. You Katie and U tube got me back on it.

I began riding bikes when I was like 7, 1964, I took off the fenders, the chain guard, kick stand, and we rode bikes in the dirt. I got my first motorcycle when I was 16 and rode on/off rode motorcycles till last year. All through the decades I always had at least one or two bicycles and rode when the spirt moved me, but spent most of my time trying to find dirt on my motorcycle.
Last spring I realized that I was bored and disappointed with the off road experiences I could do on my motorcycle and I wanted the exercise during the spring, summer, and fall….winters I ski and hike. I dusted off my 1990’s hard tail and 1980’s road bike and started to ride bikes again. After a solid year of cycling I have lost 40lbs, dropping to a 30” waist, bought 3 new amazing bikes, 2 MTB and 1 gravel, and sold my last dual sport motorcycle.
The joy of riding a bike, the quite speed and go anywhere adventure can not be found anywhere else. When I was a kid all I wanted was a dirt trail and a bike, now an old man and that formula still works. It’s just a bike, but it is magical!

When I was a kid I had to stop quick, grabbed a handful of brake with my left hand (front brake) and went over the handlebars. Me too! I quit cycling when my bike chain jammed and I went flying over the handlebars into the tarmac in my 20's (on a Saturday morning bacon run to the local butchers when we still had local shops, it even had sawdust on the floor!). Blood pouring out my elbow, luckily it was one of the few times I wore a helmet so noggin was unhurt, just a bit shaken. I just left the bike to rust and rot, never to be ridden again. Then I had a quarter life crisis around 35 and decided to get my first ever road bike. Severely punished in the foo foo area on the first club run by the horrendous saddles that come with these sorts of bikes, but recovered enough to get a much more padded saddle and rediscover the joys of cycling. Last year saw my love of cycling reach a new peak during lockdown and I even got a second hand carbon bike to replace the alloy metal one I got ten years ago. Really enjoyed the video Katie, was ace to get to know you a bit better. Warmest wishes from north London, Martina x

Baybee you are cute. I am a cyclist and this is why I watched this video. As for me, I am transgender(Male to female.), it is not my whole life but a part of it. A lot of people don’t know this but, I have made to decision to start a social non medical transition to live life full time as a woman(It is all for the betterment of my health and well being that I have to do so.). I have been making changes with things that are gradual so that the people at work and those around me can get used to a different me( So far, so good.). What has surprised me most is all the unexpected positive feedback from people I see from my day to day life, I mean obviously I didn’t tell them about it but, nothing negative has really come my way and I am gradually being received as a woman(And the world didn’t end like I have thought it would from years ago.). Life is good and I see that I will more effectively live a healthier life.

I started riding my bike regularly when I could no longer walk for exercise due to painful plantar fasciitis. I was also diagnosed as diabetic and needed a pleasurable form of exercise. I have been riding regularly for over a year now and have been able to lose about 15 kg. I want to lose more and now I'm inspired to try more of a plant based way of eating. Katie you have inspired me to continue to blossom as a bicyclist. Thank you for your content. I enjoy watching how much your life has changed over the years because of your love for cycling.

I too am a lefty and an avid cyclist who started with bike touring firstly in what you might call the lake district in Ontario Canada and then my first big tour was age 19 flying with my bike and kit to British Columbia on to Vancouver Island south to north and on to Calgary thru the Rocky Mountains solo. After that I was hooked on Biking Holidays, repeating the BC tour the next year and slowly gearing up and saving for a European Bike adventure a couple of years later. Then Flying to Amsterdam in 1980 where I hooked up with a bunch of Dutch cyclists that I had met and bonded with in Canada giving me a short tour in northern Holland. Took some time to tour some European cities by Eurorail and then on the train up to Stavanger Norway with my bike also solo and rode from there bike packing thru Scandinavia, Germany, Netherlands and ending up in a Yorkshire hospital with an athletic injury from a very uncomfortable Brooks hard leather saddle, I'll leave the injury to your imagination... not pleasant. After a fortnight in hospital continued my adventure thru the midlands and lake district up into Scotland. I could not get over the Deja Vu I had in Scotland really feeling that I had somehow been there before. I found the landscapes staggeringly beautiful riding thru the Lochs and Moors. Your videos bring out the beauty there so well and triggers my memories of people and beautiful nature there. A few years passed after getting back to Canada and I decided the California coast was my next adventure riding from Oregon thru the Redwood forests onto the golden rocky shores of Northern Cali, thru San Francisco and on to So-Cal. An amazing bike holiday! Over the past 20 years or so I've been riding Mountain Bike still taking bike holidays in places like Moab Utah, Fruita Colorado and still loving British Columbia with its thousands of trail rides that always thrill me with amazing landscapes and more adrenaline and heart pumping climbs then I can handle. I too have incredible gratitude for the time I've been given in the saddle of the many bikes and styles I've ridden. The past couple of years I have been humbled by a chronic health issue that has made riding and nordic skiing less enjoyable but have recently had surgery and really just need to feel the sun and wind, maybe a bit of rain on my face while off riding some of my local trails.
While still recuperating I discovered your channel and have really enjoyed your content immensely, especially your obvious gratitude and love of nature. Thank-you Katie!

I never learned to ride a bike as a child...at least not beyond training wheels due to a very loving, but also very overprotective mother. At 16 I bought a friends old Schwinn banana seat bike and tried to learn to ride. I ended up wrapped up in barbed wire about three weeks later after losing control of that little fixed gear bike. Forty-five years later, after having had a strong desire to ride again for months, I finally bought my first new bike. I now have a road, cross and MTB sitting in my living room and cannot ever see myself without riding in my life. It has made all of the difference in my mental and physical health, more so than anything else ever had. If you are contemplating getting a bicycle and riding...don't hesitate...just get out and do it. Thx.

This we have in common: I didn't get serious about cycling until I couldn't run anymore. I did lots of 10 k's and a couple marathons. Then in 2014, at the age of 66, I had a hip replacement and had to quit. Three years later, some friends told me their daughter was going to cycle across the country from Denver to Maine, and I thought, "If she can do that, maybe cycling will be a sport for me, too." So at 69 I bought a nice, new Trek Emonda, and got back into some serious training. It was a life changer for me. Thanks for sharing!

Bought my first road bike - used at the age of 60- didn’t have a clue how to shift gears or where to even put my hands but I had a good friend who had a great light carbon road bike I would ride on Sunday’s with on my old Trek heavy mountain/hybrid bike and I wanted to be able to keep up with him and ride farther than 20-30 miles . Two summers ago I did a 3 day 300 mile charity ride to raise money for ALS with a friend from Boston to Connecticut with about 5,000 feet of climbing each day (coming from flat Fort Lauderdale Florida it was a challenge ) but I love long distance riding, staying active and you’re a part of it !!

63 here and still riding better than ever. While in college, I was riding my bike and a car ran a stop sign. Threw me across two lanes of the street. As I was flying through the air backwards, I saw my right leg flopping around as it shouldn't have. Broke both bones in my lower right leg. Put me in the hospital for 9 days. Moms know best as they say, yep Mom had bought me a helmet a week earlier. Im certain it saved my life, as my head hit the pavement really hard. Now this was in the 70s when no one wore helmets.
Moral of the story, always wear your helmet!, Do not trust that cross traffic will stop. For years I always have waved to the drivers of cars at intersections. They think im just being friendly, I am! But mostly I am trying to get their attention. Finally, Moms know best.

I dreamed of having a road bike for at least 6 years. I rode my trekking bike for many years and I was sure that I'm too heavy for a road bike with my weight of almost 110 kg. I thought, one have to be sporty and lightweght and I should not even dare to think about it. Last year two things happened: I made the first time in my life almost 200 km in a day with a trekking bicycle and I discovered this channel. I recognize, that every woman can ride a road bike, so I bought one in November 2020. Surely my biggest motivation was to ride faster and made 200 km in 13,5 hours, but you, Katie, show me, that everyone can ride a road bike. I'm very happy in my decision. The first 1000 km are done, I'm waiting for the summer and believe, it will be gorgeous!

    Hi Katie,
When I was almost 16, I lived in a small village called South Cerney in Gloucestershire. A beautiful little place with a small river running through it, complete with the picturesque arch bridge. One day me and a few friends managed to get a hold of a few large bottles of cider, got a little merry and then the obvious happened. Stupidity 😂. Someone bet me I couldn't jump the river! So red rag to a bull I accepted the challenge. Started my run, all good, took off from the raised bank....... next thing I remember I was lying down face first in the river. I tried to stand, found I couldn't. My leg just gave way below me. They all laughed their heads off thinking I was clowning around. Turns out I hit the only rock for miles around and broke my leg in three places. Three separate bones no less. I honestly never felt a thing, at least not until the next day when I woke up from anaesthetic after the operation to repair the damage. As a result I have one leg 1/4" shorter than the other. Spent 6 more the in plaster and 3 further months on crutches because of muscle wastage. To cut a long story short, that's why I took up cycling at the age of 56. A friend was doing a cycling event called the Etape Caledonia in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and he said, "I don't think you would manage it." 😂 Challenge accepted. Bought a half decent road bike, trained like a maniac and ended up beating him! 64 now, and still cycling, still love it, and more to the point, still won't be told I can't 😂😂😂. Take care out there kid. Love your videos xx
