      Here is the most extremely valuable advice that you will receive if you're struggling with your dog... RUN from positive only trainers like Victoria. Search your most local successful BALANCED dog trainer, instead of the ridiculous "positive only" dog trainers like Victoria and you will be amazed at the results, not like the extremely edited TV program that Victoria has, which is fiction.

      I understand it. They are not great on the lead and she is trying to find ways to exercise them relatively safely, because it makes them more manageable. For real. My husband is one of those people. He got a puppy. I was doing my best to train her and give her boundaries, but he would yell at me to leave her alone. Eventually, I quit trying because what was the point of me training her if he wasn’t gonna follow up with it. But once she reached 6 months, he expected her to automatically know right from wrong. I used to tell him, how can you expect her to know if you never bothered to train her. Needless to say, he ended up rehoming her. The guy that took her in has been working with her and she’s now doing amazing. I told him, you’re a horrible pet owner, and you’re not allowed to bring any more animals into the house.

My older dog I’d 8 in February and I still take opportunities to train him. When we added our new puppy our older one regressed a little for attention, so we made sure to address it right away and have one on one time and training with him so he didnt resent the new puppy. Oh, dear! Here's what I did recently while fostering a rescue who didn't like his paws touched. You could gradually desensitize him to touching his paws by holding a high-value treat (piece of cooked chicken or healthy dog treat) in one hand, gripping it so he has to nibble at it bit by bit, as you pet his head & down the sides of his neck to his shoulder on one side, then the other, while praising him.
      Do that a few times and don't react if _he_ does - just stop, and try again, being very subtle about your touch, so he doesn't think of it as threat, but a relaxing touch.
      Do this a few times per day, gradually lowering one hand part-way down one upper leg, resting your hand monentarily, and removing it if he gets anxious.
      You can do this when he's relaxed, after he's been walked or played with. You can do it if he's lying next to you on the couch, or the grass.
      Make the touch "no big deal," just a soothing touch with no agenda but relaxing with and soothing him. You could gently run your hand down to his "elbow" then trail off.
      The idea is to get him used to having his legs and feet touched, by you (and others the household), when he's _not_ at the vet (stressful for many dogs & cats). Play with his toes, running your fingers between his toe pads (my cats like it) - see if he tolerates that. Reward him with treats, "Good boy" and petting on other areas he's cool with.
      Last month, I was able to get the foster dog (a sweet, energetic JRT mix) to accept my touch on his legs, and feet, as he worked to eat the treat, bit by bit. I'd do these exercises in brief, *5-minute sessions,* in between having him "break" and catch a stick or roll on the grass for a longer time than the training.
      He was letting me run my hand along the outside of his paws the same day (me backing off if he winced/got worried), and the second day, I was able to hold his paw, got him to *shake paw* briefly, without him stressing, and I continued the slow approach with a yummy treat he had to unwittingly work for, until shaking a paw was his response to my outstretched hand and saying "paw," and rewarding him.with a treat and/or praise.
      I've seen this method used on a few R+ dog training channels, Victoria and Zak George (YT Channel) do it.
      As for clipping your dog's claws, if you have dog nail clippers, you could gradually introduce him to them, again with treats and not trying to use them - just to get him used to the look and sound of them in a non-stressful situation.
      You might also give your dog something to calm him ahead of a trip to the vet, like Bach's Rescue Remedy, or CBD oil (research the proper dosage for dogs by size), which has a calming effect, but without any psychoactive THC (the "high") in it - usually made from the hemp plant. Or get an Rx of a relaxant from your vet ahead of the visit.
      I wish you well. 🐕

    Great episode, just wondering about the "back" training. What happened to body blocking and then giving a treat? This method shown in the video works, but I feel like it takes a lot longer and might be more confusing for the dog then just a simple body block and point technique.

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 Před rokem +15

      Body blocking is great for normal dogs, but when you have fearful and anxious dogs this is much better. This is less aggressive and less confrontational. These are also sight-based dogs so less movement and more brain activity is best. Have the dog work it out themselves and get that brain working.

    • @yasmineabdulwadood3443
      @yasmineabdulwadood3443 Před rokem +5

      It depends on the dog and situation. Body blocking with treats is ace with more fear aggressive dogs but the treat is not the point it's the follow through after the block. It's that moment they see that they understand back off and then a "thank you" the treat has to have word too for every command or action you want. Victoria's treats training is great and I learnt that a treat has a lot of words attacthched to it. And no food treat still gets the same result and pat or cuddle or what feels appropriate for all at that time. Learning and understanding each dogs personalities too. I have 5 right now.. and more in the past and I learn so much from each. Plus working in shelters. Having to look out for 100 dogs. You learn about them and they do you. (Volunteers are needed in Mexico)
      Thanks to Victoria and maybe one or 2 others have helped me a lot!!!

      @SoLuVaBle299 Před rokem +1

      I would also figure body blocking only works when you’re in an enclosed space. All the training we see in this video is outside the home in big fields. Maybe the home was unavailable or not a good place to train for some reason or another. If Victoria walked right up to Kylo and tried to “body block” in a field he’d run away or around her which is ineffective. I also agree with Eventide in that this could be seen as aggressive by Kylo, especially when they’re in such a big area.

      Stop running so the dog stops chasing and turn your body away from the dog - arms folded, no eye contact or yelling. Hopefully the owner will have caught up & leashed it. Blowing a loud whistle, like the owner had, might startle the dog.

      From my experience, stopping and facing them has stopped them in their tracks. Turning my back or walking/running away made them run after us even more. If you have a hiking stick on walks, that could be useful too to keep them back a bit. They also sell pressurized air repellent spray that could help keep them back if the owner isn't around to take them away. And walking backwards to wherever you're going (car/house) until you're safe.

    My mum's dog is smart and generally very well-trained... except in one area: he has TERRIBLE recall when outdoors, and routinely bolts out of the house, through any itty-bitty opening he finds even for a split second! He's not super food-motivated and is much more driven by curiosity, people, and socialization, so we've yet to find something that sweetens the deal enough for him to come back for recall when he's broken out like that, because all he wants to do is keep playing/sniffing/investigating.
    I want to try this surprise-party technique with him when I next visit, but even in the enclosed backyard he's so familiar with, I've not found any treat or fun thing that he likes more than exploring, and while he loves me and my family, getting scritches or attention from us is still not enough to distract him when he wants to sniff at the flowers. What do you do to train recall for a dog that prefers sniffing and exploring to... pretty much anything?

      In this case I'd say get his attention with a sound not used any other time. Can be a sound you make or a clicker or a whistle. Just something that really grabs his attention and is unique. The second he looks your way act as if you've found something exciting and interesting to look at. As you said, he really prefers exploring and sniffing - this way you're utilizing that. If he likes to play/chase, you can also get his attention then start running away. It'll make him want to chase you and play with you. In both cases, once he is nearby that's when you could do the surprise party thing shown here as a reward. Also, obviously build up that attention to the sound first. Whatever sound you choose, start out by making that sound and giving a treat when he looks. This way he knows that sound means a treat. You do this indoors and at any time really.

    I’m sorry this is why you don’t get littermates is because they’re 10 times harder to train because they’re just so invested in each other specially these dogs if they were adopted right away being puppies I don’t care what anybody has to say littermate syndrome is a real thing and they don’t even have to be from the same litter. They just have to be the same age. Also, when they’re puppies, that’s why she’s like they won’t listen to me they won’t do anything I ask them to. They are very fearful, because littermates can be fearful trying to protect their sibling. Also when the dogs were running after that jogger and her excuses oh they’re puppies sorry they’re puppies that does it matter lady I’m not trying to be mean towards our glad that she reached out for help and God, Victoria but still, if you know your dogs run after runners and people on bicycles, don’t let your dogs off leash until they are fully trained and fully trained with recall. I don’t care if nobody is out at five in the morning owners like that irritate me. Even Victoria hated the idea of her letting the dogs off the leash even at five in the morning.

    •  Před rokem +6

      That's only dealing with symptoms, but not the underlying condition. Maybe dog feels safe in the crate, but I'd consider myself as a failure in providing my dog with a comfortable and happy life if I'd have to use a crate.

    • @GriffinWulf
      @GriffinWulf Před rokem +10

      @ A good crate should emulate a den and feels comforting to the dog. Mine goes in his crate by himself. its not treating the underlying issue but its definitely the better option than a bite or having zero social life.

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 Před rokem +1

      @@GriffinWulf Not treating the underlying issue is never the better option when you could actually treat it. Having to use a crate is just bad. A crate does NOT simulate a den. You can have a dog bed that does that. Not a cage.. Also these are fearful and anxious dogs. Putting them in a crate would only make that worse. Crate training is never good for dogs and never makes for a happy dog. Even the few times Victoria uses a crate it's because the owners prefer it even after her suggesting not to. Victoria then tells them that no matter what the gate does not shut on it.

    I don't understand why a rescue would give big, high energy dogs to a middle aged woman, one dog maybe but two? Make it make sense.
    I'm sure this woman had the best of intentions but she should never have been allowed to get into a situation like this to begin with.

      Well, she has the space for them and she's a runner. It's not like she sits at home all day not exercising them. Part of what she wanted Victoria to help her with was being able to run with her dogs.

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 Před rokem +9

      That's literally illegal because it's discrimination. You can't say no to someone because they look a certain way or are a certain age. A shelter has no idea if that woman is a runner, if she'll hire a walker, etc. Your judging ways are absolutely ridiculous.

    • @sister_bertrille911
      @sister_bertrille911 Před rokem

      @@Eventide215 Unfortunately, it is not illegal in the United States (I don't know about the U.K.), although there is a movement to end some of the more egregious bans. Shelters get away with it because they are not public accommodations and are allowed to enforce what are "blanket policies and restrictions." My parents and sister were denied a dog, any dog, from a major shelter in my state because the shelter deemed them "too old," even though they have a sterling record of adopting and caring for shelter dogs. They adopted from another shelter, had that dog until she passed away at 14 and are now the delighted parents of another rescue. Do a search for "dog shelter discrimination" and you'll see how prevalent it is.

    • @Eventide215

      @@sister_bertrille911 It is illegal in the US.. A shelter can *try* to get away with it, but you can then go report it and they'll be in trouble. It's also funny how a lot of times people have 3rd party stories to tell. This didn't happen to you, it happened to your sister and parents. So you very likely don't know the full story only what they wanted you to know.

      Why get rid of them? The solution is to train the dogs so their behaviour is acceptable - which is why she reached out to Victoria. Now the dogs are much better behaved, no longer destructive (with physical and verbal boundaries), they have an outlet for their energy without being bothered by other dogs, and their human has the skills and knowledge to keep it up on her own. *Win-win!*
