  • Becoming a superyacht deck crew member will require you to work in a certain way. This may sometimes feel a bit unnecessary, but it's important to ensure the smooth running of the deck. In this video, I take a detailed look at how to store a water hose, which will be part of your superyacht deckhand training once you get on board.
Even if you're only doing yacht day work, looking after the equipment and making sure it's ready for the next person will increase your chances of being offered a permanent contract.
Yacht crew duties like this are not limited to the deck department, and even as a yacht stew you'll sometimes find yourself being asked to do things that might seem a bit pointless. This is all part of working on board a super yacht in the junior ranks, so make sure you're happy performing these tasks on a regular basis before choosing it as your next career.
Now that you know how to coil a hose properly, please check out the rest of my superyacht deckhand duties playlist at the following link:

One of the most frustrating things is to be tangled up in a wet heavy construction hose because it hasn’t been taken care of; I totally can relate Matthew…
Everything in its place, and everything done a certain way makes life easier for everyone they just don’t know it yet.

I've had a lot of practice! But it also helps that this hose is well trained, and the temperature is warm. When the hose gets cold, the material becomes rigid and difficult to work with.

This is absolutely brilliant. A bit absurd perhaps, but a terrific example of the whole world in a small action. Your rational is absolutely on point. I can't even imagine working on a super yacht. Not my dream. However, as one of four crew on a 12m catamaran I did just sail across the Pacific Ocean, and this morning on my 45' sailboat (yes, technically a yacht) I tussled with my own hose as I washed my boat. (And I just checked. Yep, clockwise. And when I was done I spent some time struggling with it to get it neatly coiled. It matters even on my boat.)
What were some of my thoughts after 7000 nm of sailing? Most of my knots were automatic, in a gale (yes tested), blindfolded. And yet my cleat hitch and fender hitch were inconsistent. Not acceptable. Curious considering I'd just done both hundreds of times. So I've been practicing them.
Your point is an important one, and not just for super yachts, one has to do things consistently, efficiently, neatly and with intention. (Neatly is where it's probably best I don't have a super yacht dream. Neatness counts, more so on a super yacht.)

I did not know what to expect here, Matthew, but I know that I’ve had it when my hose has kinks in it and both of my hoses are hung clockwise! How amazing is that? I definitely have the compulsive attitude to work in your business. Thank you for showing me the light.

  • @andiscott8470

Yep...! Coming from an interior perspective (jets), there are lot of the same things for us, as you mention also on the interior of the yacht. If something is not where it should be, or has not been put back properly, it absolutely boils my blood. Makes life, and work, a lot easier if everything is in its place and where it needs to be, ready for next use.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht

Hello Andi. I imagine that the annoyance is amplified even more on a jet because your working area is particularly compact.

  • @NosumHseebnrido
    @NosumHseebnrido Před rokem

Sometimes hose can be coil anticlockwise equally easy as clockwise, because it was made out of material that do not remember shape. Same goes for the lines, fire house. If someone will put back hose upside down, it looks like it was coil anticlockwise.
Method of coiling things clockwise is very important, because it is direct link to anchor stoper - you do not want to go anticlockwise there.

  • @rudideghelt

Even outside of boating, how many times am I annoyed because the pipes have been tidied in bad way and you sometimes get the water left in the pipes, getting out on yourself. This video is necessary inside and perhaps outside yachting👍👍👍👍👍 ( i hope my english is understandable 🙏🙏🤣🤣)
