- Yacht docking lines are critical to the safety of the ship, and they're also very expensive. When storing them, we must therefore take into account things such as accessibility, the material they are made from, and their size.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to coil dock lines up on deck, before heading down into the forepeak where I'll show you how to hang dock lines. In addition, the method of coiling that I use will demonstrate how to store rope without tangles, making it ready for immediate use.
Yacht rope storage is a subject that you'll cover in much greater detail during the Efficient Deck Hand course, but this video should give you an idea of what to expect when you first get on board a super yacht.
Now that you know how to store dock lines, continue your superyacht deckhand training by checking out this playlist:

Last week we coiled water hoses: czcams.com/video/r1v_ySSkyKY/video.html
And this week we're coiling mooring ropes!
I look forward to hearing your thoughts...
Another good video. I've met more that a few otherwise experienced sailors who insist on making pretty loops and the boat is full of hockles (the little twists that stick in the clutches). I tried explaining it to one guy, but he insisted the pretty loops were better. It was his boat, the hockles weren't that big a problem.... I said, 'No problem, your boat, your method." When I first learned about the 'figure 8' method for double braid, I tested it by tossing the line to see how it 'payed out.' The figure 8s pay out cleanly. Proof enough for me. These guys never did bothered.
For marking my anchor rode, I found multiple systems, color codes, mnemonics. All seemed a bit complicated. I chose red 0, yellow 25'. green 50', blue 75', red 100', yellow 125', etc.. The basic color wheel. Think I'll organize my mooring lines.
Smart move with the 8-figure.. I'll try that
I'm always happy to hear that you're putting these little tips and tricks into practice on your own boat!
I’m in knots at how good these last videos have been!
😂👍 I've found a gap in the market for some knot emojis!
@@WorkonaSuperyacht 🪢🪢🪢knot at all!!!
😉
@Tony InLosAngeles Oh yes 🪢! This was knot available on my computer, but my phone is giving me options!
Matthew, your tips are always most appreciated and your attention to detail is unrivaled! Thank you so much for sharing these weekly videos that allow you to share your knowledge. There is no one that cannot benefit from subscribing to your channel!
Thanks Mitchell. Your weekly comments are always appreciated!
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thank you so much for this wonderful comment, Matthew! You really are an awesome man and I really do enjoy your unique style.
Great suggestions. Thank you!
Love the little 'interim hook' to avoid having to carry an awkward coil of rope down a ladder.
Work smarter not harder, people!
Safer too.
Thanks, James. On other yachts we just used to drop the coil down onto the forepeak floor. This was my idea for an improvement to that system!
Again an amazing video!
These mooring lines will be a lot smaller than what you're used to seeing on the cruise ships!
That figure 8 thing is pretty smart. I'll need to keep that in mind if I'm ever on a yacht again.
It's particularly useful on sailing yachts because it allows a line to run freely through a block without twisting and bunching up.
so many people have no idea how much "smooth sailing" depends on organization and premeditated maintenance. Small space, any and all weather conditions, and any person liable to be where the action is means every one needs to know what and where in a freaking hurry!! I also had no clue that figure eight reduces the twists!! nice to learn something new! ( ok as a landlubber everything is new LOL)
Thanks, lyndaster46. I'm happy to hear that you learnt something new! It seems like you'd have to twist the rope into a figure of 8 pattern, but it actually just falls this way naturally.
Another useful instructional video to add to your growing database of training material.
Thank you, Malcolm 👍
Matthew, another great video.
This, and last weeks video are about finishing the job in a manner that will allow you to start your work better and/or faster.
Sort of the same way if you reverse park your vehicle, it will be that much quicker when you want to leave.
Essentially when you are putting things away, do yourself and others a favor and take the time it takes to do it proper for everyone sake.
Thank you, Frank. I always reverse into a parking space. I think of it as being kind to my future self!
Thanks Matthew, your videos show the best of technique. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Rudi. 👍
Just came at perfect timing this one mate!!! Problem solved
Great! 😊 Thank you for letting me know.
Great content. Thank you for from Portugal
Amazing I never thought about doing a figure of 8
It doesn't look as good, but it works really well!
Short but very detailed and very clear instructions like always! Love the videos Matt! You make me very exciting to start my course and to start to work in the Yachting industry!
👍☑️ Learned the figure 8 from hardhat divers coiling their air hoses way back in the day. Best way to keep everything neat, untangled and feeds out perfectly every time.
I hadn't thought of this being done with air hoses. Did you used to be a commercial diver?
Yeah that reminds me I need to reorganise Andreza's line locker :( . Like the idea of the small hanging cords. Thanks Matt hope all is well with you.
There's always something that needs doing on a yacht! I'm very well, thank you. It's good to see you back out on the water again!
That double spliced hanging rope. Got to 'steal' that idea for at the scouts.
Yes, please take it! If you're hanging the coils on a bar, another method is to just splice one end. You can then put a whipping on the free end and use it to tie a clove hitch around the bar.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thanks for the tips!
Yet to get my hands on some rope to make them but I'll have a look tomorrow
Be neat; for order is the lifting bar of work, which lifts even the heaviest loads with ease; but the disorder is like a clock without a pointer: it goes and goes, and yet nobody knows what time it is.
👍👍👍
"Disorder is like a clock without a pointer: it goes and goes, and yet nobody knows what time it is". I love this quote!

This wisdom comes from Esaias Tegnér, a Swedish poet.
The Northmen were genuinely wise.
@Daniel Lauper 👍 Thank you for introducing me to him.
Can you do a video on the different types of yacht licenses from the powerboat for up to 10m up to the license required to captain some of the largest of super yachts
Hello Chris. Please check out the following video: czcams.com/video/-JOfEY95dmI/video.html
You'll find a link to MSN 1858 in the description, which also contains this information.
If you wish to Captain the largest superyachts (over 3000GT), the details can be found by downloading MSN 1856.
Do a slicing and whipping vid mate my slicing is terrible 😣
I never would have thought winding the lines in a figure 8 would not put a twist in the line. Is the reason for the figure 8 to keep the bundle hanging in a narrower profile, thus providing room?
Also, I want to practice my line throwing. What size line would you suggest, and where can I purchase the throwing weight?
Hello Rick. The rope falls naturally in a figure of 8 pattern, and to remove the figure of 8 you have to put a twist on every loop. It looks pretty, but all of these twists must first be straightened out before you can use the rope again.
Our heaving lines are made from 10mm 3-strand polyester rope. Each one is 30 metres in length. The leather sand bags should be stocked at your local chandlery. Alternatively, you could make your own monkey's fist.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thank you. I’ll get right on my project by putting a bucket at the end of my driveway and making sure I make long distance shots. :-)
West Marine carries a throw line in a bag which can be thrown, but the line is polypropylene. I’m not crazy about that type of line as it kinks. I like your monkey fist idea better and polyester fabric. The throw bag might work for emergency use. czcams.com/video/T_Fc96Faqxw/video.html
I’ll need to work on my monkey knitting techniques.
@Rick Hinkle We have a throw line and bag just like that as part of our tender's safety equipment. It wouldn't be suitable for sending our mooring lines ashore, but you might be able to use it on something much smaller.
Hi Matt,
Heading out to Palma soon for a some dockwalking/break from the UK. I'm UK citizen so what visa do I need?
Love the videos.
Cheers
Hello Vox Veritas. I always recommend double checking with the appropriate authorities, but my understanding is that you don't need a visa. Instead, you'll be given 90 days on entry. If you find permanent work within these 90 days you'll be signed onto the yacht and the days will stop being counted. If not, you'll have to leave the EU and won't be able to return until a further 90 days has passed.
I wish you every success!
Thanks for the video what is the name off this type off rope how to make eys splice
This is double braid (sometimes called braid on braid) polyester rope. Here's a great tutorial that shows you how to make the eye splice: czcams.com/video/Ym1-rI0SdaA/video.html
@@WorkonaSuperyacht thank lot sir
