Why 20 Franc Gold Coins are AWESOME for Gold Stacking

  • In this video I talk about 20 Franc Gold Coins and why they are AWESOME for Gold Stacking! The European 20 Franc Gold Coin gets most of its value from the gold content in the coin. Each 20 Franc Gold Coin contains .1867 Troy Ounces of Pure Gold. The 20F Gold Coins are 90% Gold which makes them 21.6K. The most common 20 Franc Gold Coins are the France Gold 20 Francs Rooster and the Swiss Gold 20 Francs Helvetia. After the currency treaty was signed in 1865 many other European Countries started making their own versions of the 20 Franc Gold Coin. These Gold Coins are great for Gold Stacking today because they are very liquid and because they can be bought near spot or even below spot! I will be looking for good deals on these in the future and will be trying to acquire the swiss 20 franc gold coin and the french 20 franc gold rooster as well!

I live in Switzerland. Here the Helvetia 20 gold francs, or "Vreneli" as they are nicknamed with affection, are popular, as are the also plentiful French roosters. Compared to newer under 1 ounce gold rounds, they are cheaper. An advantage is that they are as small in diameter as common currency coins. If you have to bail out with gold by plane, you can mix your gold with your small change in your wallet so that the scanner staff of the airport security will not be alarmed as easily as when you would try to slip full 1 ounce gold coins of larger diameter trough.

I'm French and these little 20 Francs gold coins are the most popular, easy to buy and sell gold coins of all. The French 20 Francs gold coin comes in 5 different designs: Napoleon III tête nue (naked head), Napoleon III tête laurée (crowned with laurel), Genius (lucky angel), Marianne-Coq (rooster) and Ceres (Roman goddess) that you've presented.

Ive picked up alot of these over the years but the 1902 Rooster I got awhile back is still my fav of the bunch because it has absolutely no wear but the toning is unbelievable. It has an almost copper patina that really stands out next to newer gold coins. Francs are great for so many reasons. Great vid

I think you´re absolutely right here, collecting the small gold coins from the first European monetary union, also called the Latin European gold union, based on the French 20Fr gold coins. Many countries joined, like you said, a nice variety, and affordable. Other collectibles are of course the British Sovereigns, the German Marks and being Scandinavian, we had a good Scandinavian gold union here too, with gold coins of 8.06 grams of pure gold, so true quarter ounces, less variation but fine for gold stacking. Feels nice in your hand. Most affordable are the Danish 20 kroner, and half of that size, the 10 kroner. 90% pure.

love your videos! Quick lesson to read italian vowels: A (as in alphabet), E (as in epiphany), I (as in indulgent), O (as in olive), U (double O). Always. Another hint: we use H to make C and G hard. So that CHE and CHI are read as KE and KI. Apart from this rule, you read Italian as it's written. I managed to teach a Thai guy to read Italian in five minutes (but he could speak English).

Beside the French and Swiss 20 Franc coins there's also the Italian 20 Lire coin. As part of the latin monetary union they're exact same specs as 20 Franc, size, dimensions, everything. Also worth looking for. They do tend to have a slightly higher numismatic value but can still be found cheap. As well as Francs the Lire also exists in 10 Lire versions. Living in Europe I love vintage European coins. While it is true that usually dealers buy them slightly below spot they also sells not too far above spot for their size so they still have a nice small spread and thus being a very good choice in their size range.
Another coin that also tends to have small spread is the Austrian 1 Ducat restrike. Also worth looking for. Very unique .986 alloy which have a very nice color - imho nicer than pure gold.
Probably my favorite Frenc coin is the Angel coin - who doesn't fall in love with that legend. Another favorite is the Danish 10 and 20 kroner from 1908-1912. Probably the most detailed gold coins ever made. If you get a good clear strike it's amazing all those small details you can see with a loupe. Not many coins come close to that and vertainly not any modern coins I know of. They took their time to make details you need a magnifier to see!

I had wondered why one commenter here said that buying 1oz gold buffalo made him sick but 5-6 gold 20 frank "over a 1oz" was preferable. So you simply misspoke -- but made me feel smarter for figure out what you meant to say 😀😁 I don't think the coin says how much gold is in it (next time put coin in holder so it is still), so without that I doubt I'll ever purchase one.
