IS PRE 33 GOLD GOOD FOR STACKING?

  • In this video I talk about pre 33 gold and I talk about if it is good for gold stacking or not. Pre 33 gold coins were minted by the US Mint before 1933. Pre 33 gold is still bought and sold today by gold stackers and coin collectors. Gold coins from 1837-1933 are made out of .900 gold. My personal pre 33 gold stack currently consists of a 1880 half eagle and that is it. I hope to be getting more pre33 gold in the future. The most common types of pre 33 us gold coins are the double eagle, the gold eagle, the half eagle, and the quarter eagle. Buying pre 33 gold can be done online or at a coin shop. The best pre 33 gold coins for stacking are the common dates. When is comes to pre 33 gold vs bullion I break down the pros and the cons in this video. Have fun gold stacking in 2020 and beyond!

Dude i just found out yesterday my dad stacks gold and silver now wich i think is awesome. I was at a family get together yesterday and idk if he knew before hand i stacked gold and silver as well but anyhow he called me over and was like i gotta show you some coins i got and at first i thought he had said corn and so i was thinking what the heck is my dad doing buying corn?! Hahaha lmbo but then he pulled out some coins he had bought out of his gun safe then i was like oh okay this is pretty awesome. Then he ask me if I had been buying any gold or silver and i said yes and told him what all i have and he said okay just pace yourself with it and dont buy too much but anyhow i thought that was pretty awesome to say the least. Now i know me and my dad have something in common

Love that classic American Gold...great to stack in my opinion. I know they don't pull as much premium but you usually don't have to pay the high premiums either. The background to Roosevelt's order is that the US in 1933 was under the gold standard, which Roosevelt ended. So gold ownership was a lot more widespread then and it made a lot of sense to a government (who wanted to restrict and control people's wealth) to issue a confiscation order.

I don't have any myself but my dad has a pre-'33 Eagle and Double eagle he had mounted on a gold pendent back in the eighties and I might be inheriting them when he passes. Don't forget silver was also banned in 1934 but of course silver coins were still allowed to circulate.

Pre 1933 gold coins had some great designs like the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle! But did you know that when the first 1883 V nickels came out, they didn't have the word cents on the back! So people were gold plating them and passing them off as 5 dollar gold pieces! No one realize at that time that they were nickels because all they had on the reverse was V, the Roman numeral for 5!

In my experience the modern commemorative half eagles (1984-current) can typically be had for less premium than the pre-1933 versions.
Also, there are Mexican equivalents that can be had for typically a little less premium:
    2 pesos = $1 gold coin
    5 pesos = $2.50 quarter eagle
    10 pesos = $5 half eagle
    20 pesos = $10 eagle
50 pesos = 1.205 ounces of gold, also called a "centenario" (no equivalent of double eagle, that I know of)
The 2 and 5 pesos are typically much cheaper than their US equivalents.

In Europe, the best price for bullion gold I can get ranges around 54 EUR/gram with transport included. While an 1876 20 Francs Genie coin unc 58, cost me 55 eur/gram... Due to the high premiums on bullion gold , looks like a better time to actually buy gold numismatics, if you are a long term gold and silver stacking passionate, that numismatic value could increase and add up to the gold value quite nicely.

The st guadens and the indian are my favorite.😊i have found pre 33,s premiums are way more stable.granted if you get a nice one you may get stabbed on numistatic value but off dates and higher circ #,s there are deals.history is big ,like morgans.

All gold is good but I don't like having them myself. I like the today's 1/4oz gold. Canadian and American eagles. Perth mint coins. I can only get a 1/4 every 2weeks sometimes a extra 1/10oz if I work hard enough.

I like the designs on the pre 33 gold more than the gold bullion coins now. Don’t get me wrong the design in the gold coins now is nice but I like the pre 33 designs better.

I think one of the most important points that was missed in this video, stems off of the fact that the executive order also stated "gold coins having recognized special value to collectors of rare and unusual coins", which protected recognized gold coin collections from legal seizure and likely melting. This fact in itself is probably the most important factor when thinking about stacking in this economic climate and hedging against a potential future confiscation. Federal law clearly states even today, that any gold bullion can be confiscated in the event of national crisis.

I prefer pure gold coins, however I like pre 33 for the history and numismatics. So, I wouldn't mind getting more pre 33s.

I want to start stacking pre--33 gold coins, but I'm not sure which grade is the best to buy. I'm seeing a lot of VF, AU and MS61 coins online with a wide variety of pricing. Which grade is the best to start stacking? Should I buy an AU or VF, or go for the MS61? In the past I only stacked silver.

Could you speak to the issue of selling pre 33 gold to a LCS or online dealer. How does that compare to selling modern gold coins?

Westender Days usually you get a bit less for it but you can sell private party as well 🔥🐉

I thought these pre 33 coins held more of a numismatic value myself. Then again there would be "key dates" to look for.

Another fun fact was that the Indian Head on the 1907 and later Eagles was not an Indian at all. The person who was the model for the coin was of Greek heritage from what I understand..

First the pre 33 US gold is a good stacking coin when you keep a couple of things in mind. First, only buy coins that are NOT cleaned and are in AU or BU condition. Next, do not buy coins with numismatic premiums or special rare varieties. The regular coins in the AU and BU condition are beautiful and fun to fondle and fawn over. Also, the coins in my mentioned categories will be much easier for you to sell at a good price. As far as numismatics ? Unless you are a top expert, you will simply get sucker punched on prices coming AND going.

Pre 33 gold tends to be a little to numismatic/collectible for me.. i like to hold my gold in my hands sometimes, look at it, admire it. the whole experience. I chose modern bullion coins because i can handle them a lot more guilt free :) Haha
