  • 📜 History of Catherine the Great, Part 1
Before she became Catherine the Great, the legendary empress of Russia, she was a smart but lonely girl named Sophia. Her mother ignored her until family connections proposed a marriage between Sophia and the presumptive heir to the Russian throne - and suddenly she was thrown from her quiet life in a backwoods mansion to the center of a cutthroat political world.

He was a crazy monarchist who wanted to restore the Romanovs and the Qing throne, something that actually made him severely disliked in Mongolia. His rule was short and he never liked the Mongols, seeing them as just savages. Even his conquest of Mongolia was a mistake. He was leading a fleeing White army band from the advancing Red Army, and crossed the border to get away, then attacking and removing the Chinese warlord who had been sent to Mongolia to pacify the breakaway province.

Funny fact: Catherine The Great had a bastard son, a son outside her marriage with a militar guy, they had an affair. Unfortunatelly I don't know what happened to him, but her son lived, married a girl and started the Eckerman Family (my family btw); because of the jewish origin of the name, and the fear of being killed by their "royal blood" during the Revolution, they escaped to German, and after some time, escaped to other parts of the world. One of those parts was Brazil, my grand-grandma, Maria Eckerman was a lovely woman! I want the world to know her story! 💖 (Yes, we have evidences that this is true, my family contacted a guy who had the original documents signed by the court about the Eckermans)

Yes! Frederick the Great finally got mentioned in one of these episodes!
One of the coolest monarchs in German history, who apart from being a military genius, was a great philosopher and advanced the freedom of speech and religion in Prussia, coining the awesome phrase: "Everyone shall be happy by his own fashion in my country" (or something similiar, basically: go live whatever way you want).
Okay, I don't want to paint an 18th century monarch as a saint here, but he was pretty open-minded and progressive for his time. Let's not forget the fact that for evey good monarch you get three dozen appaling ones.

I'm just picturing Fredrick letting out a massive exasperated sigh and then turning to his sister like:
      "Wilhelmina?"
      "I'm on it."

Freakin' Frederick the Great. What a legend. I'm glad he treated young Sophia with kindness.

When I was in school, I didn't like history classes much. Not that I didn't like history itself, because I loved documentaries and other media based on history. I figured out the way I was taught was not usually engaging enough or there were simply too many people being talked about and I had no visual representation of them. I discovered these Extra History videos a few days ago from the Genghis Khan series, and it was the first time I had ever learned about him! To go from knowing "Genghis Khan was this historic guy from Mongolia or whatever" to being able to comprehend his entire life's story in about an hour was great! Thank you so much for these videos! They make me want to seek out more interesting ways to self-study history lessons I missed when I was younger.

I’m kind of surprised at how much I like Freddy, even though I know very little about him. But considering that many nobles from what would become Germany had done their absolute best to be the stereotype of “nobility purely of the flesh, with none of the spirit” just a century before (Dat 30 Years War, tho. Feels bad, man.), it’s kind of remarkable that someone as well-liked and respected as Frederick managed to emerge from the same lineage.
Srsly tho, I need to learn more about him so I can justify having him share “favorite king” status with Gustav Adolf II of Sweden.
