- đ History of WWI: The Christmas Truce, Part 1
On Christmas Eve in 1914, soldiers in the trenches sang together across the wastes of No Man's Land. Some were brave enough to step out of their trenches and meet face-to-face, forming an unofficial truce that lasted (with a few blemishes) until the end of Christmas Day.

The dude who brought a football to a war zone: "Eh, you know, just in case"
lol
British soldiers only spent 7 days in the trenches then rotated back to rest areas, then to training, preparation for being back in the line and then another week in the line.
When they were in the rear areas the army liked to keep them occupied so musical concerts, boxing matches and football matches with other units were regularly organised.
Its part of why British units didnt have the morale problems seen in other armies.
There would be a lot of deflated footballs hanging round ready for the next rest period in a British army unit.
Ecsactly
And now imagine that the war was settled by a penalty shootout.....
There were lots of Footballs. They were used as motivation too keep going forward. Because we Brits are simple minded like that. "I have serious concerns about leaving this trench where the Germans will fire machine guns at me....Oh look a ball, tally ho!"

Honestly best thing that coulda happened to him since its probably the only reason he lived.
A RIDICULOUS number of the originally deployed troops did NOT survive the remaining years of the war.
Most of the WW1 survivors were made up of troops who weren't even deployed until the twilight of the fighting.
Remember the men who made this truce still had four whole years of war left to see, so not many of them made it.
Lucky that it was boxing day, if that had happened under other cirmstances, he may have been shot.

The British Indian soldiers thinking about their own holidays when looking at the Christmas lights was strangely wholesome
It's just such a sweet reminder that we are all so much more alike than we even realize. Not only to other people in our world today, but to the people of the past too. I'm getting an MA in history and honestly, the greatest takeaway I've had throughout all my research and coursework in the last nine years is that people in the past are just like us. They wanted the same things that we want: love, family, community, freedom, security, to find their talents and purpose. It's easy to forget that and focus on the differences, but things like this remind us

That's actually true
WWI exemplifies the stupidity of war, while this event shows the tenacity of kindness.
Egor Ananyev War is actually seriously sickening........... destructive and not much benefits and at best only able to barely recover. It is not even worth it.
It's never worth it. What I meant in my comment was that the intrinsic human kindness is in conflict with the artificial/political construct known as war. As Sting says "there's no such thing as a winnable war; it's a lie we don't believe anymore."
Egor Ananyev if you ever read "for whom the bell tolls?" You'll see that war is always about good people doing some shit for bad people
WWI was killing on an industrial scale. Friends were encouraged to join up together and be in the same regiment. That sometimes meant that a small town lost their entire population of young men as they got killed together in the same battle. The young women were left without any young men to marry. It was absolutely tragic and horrific all around.
Egor Ananyev I had a great great grandfather who had written and told stories and I have been told and read everything about him and he had written down how he went out to respond with seize fire and he got shot by his own fellow allies from the pit he was healed and recovered by German soldiers then walked over to the over side. The British soldiers shot the German soldier while returning to his cover it was a sad day for him and ended up sneaking out of the ditch and returning home in Britain because he had been shot

he definitely was in the trenches back then. He suffered from a gas attack and was almost blinded.
There is, but I'm not looking it up right now. Cross reference 'Hitler Military Career' with 'ww1 Christmas truce'. We know he was there, at the least.
Thomas Weber (2010) "Hitler's First War" quotes Hitler's fellow dispatch runner Heinrich Lugauer: "When everyone was talking about the Christmas 1914 fraternization with the Englishmen, Hitler revealed himself to be its bitter opponent. He said, 'Something like this should not even be up for discussion during wartime.'" The book notes following source reference: IFZ, MA-732, NSDAP/Hauptarchiv, report by Heinrich Lugauer, 5 February 1940.
Oh yeah, we was definitely in the trenches, I'm just wondering whether the story about him yelling at his soldiers for wanting to cease fire is actually true.
_If_ it's not true, it's a rather widespread and _consistent_ falsehood. I can't seem to find the original source that claims he was there, but I see nothing saying otherwise. The earliest reference to it I can find (and the one Wikipedia cites as its source) is a 2005 article in the New York Times, but whenever I visit the page nothing is displayed except the article title and the typical "related articles" listing; perhaps it's just the computer and browser I'm using, so I'll try again when I have more access.
It _is_ true that Hitler was serving as a corporal the Bavarian army in 1914 and wasn't a totally cheerful or accepting person, so it's at least quite plausible. I couldn't find any references to this event (or at least his attitude toward it) in accounts of his military career--it's only mentioned in writing that focuses on the event itself. That seems to suggest it's either unverified or too minor of a point to include in literature that covers him. However, I'm not super well-read on Hitler biographies, and the few things I did scan though weren't all that detailed, so my search doesn't really prove anything one way or the other, at least when it comes to the Hitler-focused literature.
I always loved this little tale of history. Restores that faith in humanity just a bit.
And God
this is an example of humanity one man can start singing from another side, another rises up to sing from an enemy side then another from an allied side. This shows that no matter what the weather or the situation is, it doesnt matter, there are no angels or demons⊠there are only peopleâŠ

In a war that never ends
"We are all, we are all, we are all, WE ARE ALL FRIENDS!" no ones going to see this ;-;
Wrong

TODAY WE'RE ALL BROTHERS
This was one of the most heartwarming events in all of history. Where men who were trained to kill each other put their differences aside and celebrated Christmas like they were family.
Jumbo Cat Studios and then leaders put an end to it
Jumbo Cat Studios
Technicly they weren't trained to kill one another, but were trained to fire a weapon. During WW1 the training was (a tl;dr version on it) 'Shoot at this sack, if you hit it more than three times, you'll get sent to the front lines!'
Edgars P I would miss on purpose lol.
GermanSniper They did that aswell because of that lack of training, when the military started using human shaped targets, shooting to miss the enemy became less and less common

"You'll be home by Christmas, lads!"
" *I never said which Christmas* "
Every time I return to this video I find myself moved near to tears, especially by that final bit. Fantastic video, and a truly beautiful display of humanity.
"They exchanged hats"...for some reason that's just so cute!
Itâs still something that happens today
True it's called trade or like they are like"want to try my hat and I get to try your hat" lol
I thought I was the only who jus cheezed at that I was like omggg thatâs so adorable
Team fortress 2.
ye
I started crying right away and needed a break in between, and the "We're fighting for freedom." - "That can't be, we're fighting for freedom" just broke me. We know how many million innocent died, and the obliviousness to the situation is just gut-wrenching.
Definitely, and that's part of the heart-breaking - these soldiers had no power in it and so many people lost their lives, younger than I am by now...I am German (and so may you be, or maybe your forefathers?), but I shed tears equally for all sides. What a painful injustice, and how lucky we are nowadays...
"That's impossible, we're fighting for freedom" has to be one of the most emotional sentences. Nobody thinks they are the devil, yet we all do devilish things.
We were all, we were all, we were all friends!
My great-grandfather head wrote in his autobiography( he was a German living in austrian-hungarian and shortly before the war he became a military band member) he was told by his commanding officer to go up onto the no man's land on Christmas and play Christmas music with the rest of his band for both sides of the trenches
Jacob Dominick i hope he lived through the entire war, my great great great Grand Father Who was was a soldier of the Austria-Hungary Sadly killed by a artillery shell in Serbia.
3rd he did live through the war and after it was over he decided to immigrate to America. A funny anecdote that his father said to him when he decided to leave for America" do you want to live like a animal drink water all your life."( keep in mind the America at the time was in a Prohibition)
One of the most inhuman wars history has one of the most human stories of history.
Whenever people get close to showing how good humanity can be, someone comes along and destroys that...
"Hey here's a scarf"
"Aww thank yo-"
"I will have that back by tommorrow"
As a civilian you can understand what is going on here, but as a veteran, it has so much extra meaning. Things that I can't explain, things that are hidden behind the eyes of broken men and the glimpse of hope that conquers fear against the odds.
Merry Christmas to the men and women in combat overseas, may we broker a peace between all nations and creeds for the sake of our sons and daughters.
Brett Biederman Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you, sir!
Hua brother
Merry Christmas :)
thank you for serving our country and have a merry christmas
They fought war itself
Rewatching this series again this Christmas of this horrible year, for this somewhat peaceful and humane event gives me hope that even when this year was hell for everyone, there is still some sort of light in th darkness and that we as one Earth, we will move on from this pandemic. Merry Christmas, everyone, to all across the world
you too, may love spread all around the world and let light shine all across the earth.
Silence
Oh, I remember the silence
On a cold winter day
After many months on the battlefield
And we were used to the violence
Then all the cannons went silent
And the snow fell
Voices sang to me from no man's land
I made myself a tradition. Every Christmas Eve I come here to watch this video and I start crying everytime. I just love this story, a story about humanly love between enemies in inhuman times. Merry Christmas to you all!
You should watch "Joyeux Noel"
A great film about the Christmas Eve's Armistice.
Merry Christmas Fabi!!! I tend to do the same, it's a story that warms my heart every Christmas.
Almost that time again
@@alexcruji9535 Almost there!!
A man after my own heart
Funny how Wargaming keeps sponsoring the more emotionally heavy episodes...
of course it is marketing, but i think the storys they are sharing / sponsoring / retelling are good education.
we humans have violence in our blood. its the humanity we fight for. to see stories of humanity surviving war, makes me want to play those games. it makes me want to experience what they did. video games are more appealing than actual war.
this is at least why I find games like that appealing. I also agree that either way, its just a good story.
Man this makes tears in my eyes
Can't Believe there were times in war where they realized that they all are humans
A candle's glow is most beautiful in the darkest room. Tis a tragic truth, but one that still brings hope.
Just imagine how stupid it actually is: humans were penalized for refusing to kill.
This story always brings tears to my eyes and hope to my heart.
Del Kenon The point is that conscription is morally unjust. If you can't convince potential soldiers to fight for your cause, then there shouldn't be a war in the first place.
Of all the things I ever learned about WW1 in my youth, THIS is the event that has always stayed with me. Not the battles, or the politics, but of one brief time where we didn't see each other as monsters.
Jay yeah it done the same to me
The fact that they didn't only Cease fire, but also Played games, chatted and Mourned the death of not only their own, but their Opponent's fallen comrades. Even giving gifts and opening up to the Opponent. Is just really wholesome to me
this is a good example of optimism having benefits. you might have a bad, hard time, and you might be sad and depressed but for a small amount of time something good might happen, and if it does, enjoy it while you can, because the tomorrow might bring more harder things to you.
"The War was supposed to be over by now..."
They said that about the Civil War too. And I'm willing to bet that's been said about plenty of other wars as well.
"The war was supposed to last only a few months" Basically sums up all wars
The american civil war is still going on, just look at politics, anti-racial movements and *gun-control*.
@@BattleshipOrion Gun Control is a crime against the people...Though it's not a war. Yet.
"The War wasnt ever supposed to start anyway"
Hardly anyone accounts for resistance and casualties. Supply lines are thought of but it's mainly focused on the advance. Casualties only come in to thought when the graveyards start getting full unfortunately. Sometimes it can be prodding to get a feel for the enemy as well. My main point is centralized planning= fuckery
