Stringing in the new year and Pongal
The turn of the year is so much more than just another day on the calendar. It represents something crucially important to the human psyche - a closure of past disappointments and a renewal of hope and optimism. Pongal, a festival celebrated in many parts of India under different names, is a harvest festival that is similar in spirit, symbolizing hope, abundance as well as gratitude.
Cultures the world over have evolved traditions to mark such occasions in myriad different ways. In Chennai, rasikas of Carnatic Music have enjoyed a long standing tradition of "stringing" in the new year. For over 45 years, the Mylapore Fine Arts Sabha and the Lalgudi family have preserved a tradition of opening the new year with a glorious violin concert, always held in the morning on January 1st of each year. This unbroken streak continues into 2022, but is extra-special for two reasons. First, proceeds from the concert will benefit a worthy cause. Secondly, the concert - which, in keeping with tradition, took place at 9AM on New Year's day - is now being released online on the auspicious occasion of Pongal for a global audience.
Beginning in 1976, the New Year MFA concerts have featured violin duets by the (late) Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman and Sri Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan, followed by trios featuring Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Sri Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, and then duets by Sri Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. The new-year concert tradition has been unbroken thus far for 45 years now, taking place even amidst extenuating circumstances such as cyclones and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. While the January 2021 concert was unavoidably virtual in nature, it was thankfully once again held in physical form in 2022.
For rasikas, this special concert has always held a different vibe. Always a long concert, rich with musical and technical depth, the artistes also endeavor to infuse the concert with an energy that is appropriate for the occasion. From song selection (avoiding lyrics that dwell on life's impermanence, for instance), to the festive nature and pace of kalpana swaras, the concert leaves the listener with a feeling of having just completed a pilgrimage. One can hardly imagine a better mood for the beginning of the year.
This year's concert features a violin duet by Sri Lalgudi G.J.R Krishnan and Smt. Vijayalakshmi, accompanied by Sangeetha Kalanidhi Trichy Sankaran and Sri Ghatam Suresh. However, as noted earlier, this year's concert is also "special" for a different reason. The artistes have elected to donate the proceeds to Anandam Trust, to support the Trust's most recent efforts to build a free school for children with special needs hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds. Smt. Bhageerathy Ramamoorthy founded the Anandam Trust after a career as a bank executive, where she was a first-hand witness to the plight of many aged pensioners. The Trust runs a home for over 100 seniors in Chennai, in addition to supporting other worthy causes. They currently hope to begin operating a free school for special children with learning disabilities towards mid 2022. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to Anandam Trust.

திருச்சி சங்கரன் சார் 1965ம் வருடம் விவேகாநந்தா காலேஜ்ஜில் பாலமுரளி கிருஷ்ணா சாருக்கு பக்க வாத்தியம் வாசித்த நினைவலைகள் வருகின்றன.
