- In this video I play some games of pool under the International 8 Ball Pool rules. As I play the games I talk through my thought process, choice of shot, how I'm controlling the cue ball and getting position on the next ball. Hopefully these International Pool Rules games help to understand some of the rules in real game situations. Areas that are discussed in what makes a legal break, deciding colours, the foul and ball in hand, combination shots and loss of turn shots.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table

Played my first session with these rules with a couple of mates that had also never played them before, two of us had played World Rules in the past and we agreed that this is a far better ruleset. As said in the video, scenarios where the differences in rules actually matter didn't come up too often and I'd say the main one is cue ball in hand following a foul which feels much better than getting two visits, particularly if you are in a difficult position. Hopefully, as we start playing more often again, we'll be able to feel the benefit of the combination shot rules and not having to worry about frames getting bogged down by pocket blocking.
Great video! Your games looking good.
Thanks
Very interesting we haven’t started the international rules yet , is there a book out with the complete rules available in Australia
I don't know about books but there is a link to the rule set here www.ultimatepoolgroup.com/rules
kool stuff and great use of graphics..what editor do you use?
Cheers. Adobe After Effects
Damn. Was hoping you'd cover everything.
I'm on black and foul. My understanding is it is not loss of frame foul unless black is pocketed. So white in off or push shot. As long as black remains on table, it's just a ball in hand foul?
Yes that’s correct
International rules are better than World rules cuz the the covering pocket strategy (due to combination shots [on two color groups] are not allowed in world rules) + 2 regular visits after a foul make the game annoying in my opinion.
International rules makes the game easier than world rules (perhaps to easy) and more fun than world rules with the 1 visit with the ball anywhere on the table, and allowing combination shots either success (=continue, if your ball is potted) or fail (=loss of turn, if your ball is NOT potted).
However, i think the Blackball rules are the best and most fun cuz the the combinations shot rules are more balanced but challenging, i.e., you have to succeed the combination shot (so your ball is potted) , otherwise it's a foul. in addition every foul is 1 free shot (you can hit any ball an pot opponent's balls, which make the game more fun and challenging) and 1 visit. also you are able to pot your last balls and black ball at the same shot.
for conclusion, Blackball is more fun cuz you cam make more creative legal shots in this game.
At 10:37, in order to get the snooker, you play the cushion first, before hitting the top right corner red ball. Is it allowed? I thought you had to hit the ball first then the cushion, no? I'm a bit lost her, sorry (kind of beginner to the game). Also, thank you for your amazing videos, they help a lot!
After I hit the red, the red hits the cushion making it a legal shot. It is “either” the cue ball or the object ball that has to hit a cushion “after” the initial contact. Hope that helps?
Question #1: Let's say no balls are pocketed on the shot AFTER the break. Are the suits still on?? Does this mean that the opponent coming to the table can simply choose solids or stripes (or, in this case, reds or yellows) simply by potting a ball??
#2: Don't you have to call your pocket on the 8-ball (so flukes can be avoided) ??
#1 Yes if a player doesn’t pot on the shot after the break then the table is still open. The incoming player can claim a colour by potting a ball. If they miss this just continues until someone legally pots.
#2 No you don’t need to call a pocket on any shot in this rule set.
It’s worth noting that despite being called “International” rules, these are not the rules used for “American 8 ball”. There are lots of different rule sets out there.
Can you explain the touching ball with these rule please.
It’s pretty much the same as other rules sets. If you are touching a ball you must play away from it so that it doesn’t move, or it will be deemed a push shot. If it is your own ball then you have effectively already contacted your ball so you can simply play way without have to strike another of your balls (as long as something hits a cushion).
You would need another set of balls to play other games like 9-ball or 10-ball, so buying "international" style of balls seems to be more worthy.
Hi could you please clarify a reason why a deliberate push shot on your own ball is not loss of frame in rules it says 9 loss frames I believe it should be 10 please help me understand😮
You are using two different terms in the same statement there. A “Push shot” on its own is just a standard foul. Quite often a push shot can be done accidentally, especially if the cue ball is close the object ball. A “Deliberate foul” is loss of frame. This is when you clearly foul on purpose (usually to gain an advantage). I’m not sure why someone would “deliberately” play a “push” shot but if they did and the ref deemed it to. E deliberate and to gain some sort of illegal advantage then it would be loss of frame. I’m afraid I’m not sure what you are referring to when you talk about 9 and 10? Are they rule numbers on something you are reading?
@@PoolSchool thank you for your answer I will try to explain in the rules of international rules it says there's 9 ways of loss of frame that is why I said should be 10 as an example of this imagine your on yellow you play and push it into pocket ref says ball in hand awards to incoming player only to find black tight into pocket with his reds tight against the black with no shot because he will play yet pocket the black resulting in loss of frame here's hoping this explains why I said a deliberate push shot
Are you on Facebook if so I could send a picture of what I'm trying to explain. and again thanks for help 😊
Ah ok I see what you mean. As far as my interpretation of the rules go, if you deliberately foul (to gain an advantage), it is loss of frame. My take on that is that it doesn't matter what sort of foul it is, if it's deliberate it's loss of frame. However you are correct in that a push shot is only listed as a standard foul and not in the "loss of frame fouls". In the situation you describe though, I don't think this would arise? If the player on yellow just potted the yellow legally, they wouldn't be able to hit the black legally, so it would be a stalemate and a re-rack. If it was touching the yellow and they just played away, the red player would be forced to go for their red anyway and pot the black and loss the frame. So why would they play a deliberate push shot in the first place?
@@PoolSchool thanks for your time and understanding you are correct it was a bad example nobody would play the shot I described and as you said the intent of the shot was deliberate the referee could say that it's loss of frame looking forward to more great tips maybe you can do one power breaking for women our ladies are struggling with the 3point break all for now cheers keep safe 🤠

@@365Condoms just admit your wrong. You should go to the world championships and tell each country playing that they don’t play these rules. See how you get on.
it,s only recently that these rules have been adopted in competition
These rules are not very good, world rules are def the best rule set
Jokes
I stopped playing pool years ago when it just became a game of snookers and who can cover the pockets with their balls..international rules where being able to pot opponents balls making covering pockets no advantage revives the game for me.
Best for fudgers 😂

Everyone banging on about these rules like they're the second coming of Christ - they're ok, but all they needed to do was tweak the existing rules to get rid of certain aspects of the game that frustrate many - or just switch to the best set of rules - Blackball .
