    Let’s face it: starting a conversation can be intimidating. Whether you’re meeting a total stranger, trying to network, or on a first (or even tenth) date, it’s often difficult to know what to say to start a conversation and keep it flowing. Introducing yourself to a stranger or approaching an acquaintance might seem anxiety-inducing, but it shouldn’t be. It’s far riskier to get on a highway in a car than it is to walk up to somebody at a party or a networking event. Luckily, even though it might seem like good conversation skills are something some people are just born with, all it takes is a bit of practice.

    I went on holiday to Spain with my ex and her family once, when the train we were on stopped at the station due to what we later suspected was an emergency.
    While the passengers were looking around, visibly confused, and we all fell victim to a very awkward silence, my ex didn't hesitate to point out to a random man on the train about the book he was reading, and asked if he was a psychologist. This sparked a very interesting conversation and led to the rest of the cabin opening up alot more so we could enjoy this unusual event. This man also turned into a friend which they are still in contact with to this day.
    She dared to start a conversation about something she noticed about someone, in a foreign country, not knowing if that person even spoke a word of english. Never in my life have i been more impressed with someone, ever.

      I often ask about their name ("That's a pretty name. How did you wind up with it?" "What type of culture does your name represent?" "Like [insert celebrity with same name OR make a pun using their name]?). For you I'd say "Malak... as in, my lack of knowledge is showing"
      Or their accent. It usually leads into their background which can give you more ideas for directing conversation.
      Alternatively, I ask why they are here, how long they've been here, what their plans are for later in the day.
      I'm an introvert and find conversation tricky. I heard that some retirement homes have been trialling robots that vaguely converse with the old folks (they just go around and ask "How are you? How are the grandkids?"), and apparently it makes the retirees feel happier and more at ease. So if a robot can perk people up by asking generic questions, we sure as hell can do it! And probably better too!

      @zucchinigreen Před 4 lety +15

      Exactly lol.
      I usually like his advice, but I find this video is kind of hollow.
      I think it's better to create a conversation around a situation than singling out someone because it will sound like a pickup line.
      So if you are waiting in line or sitting in a coffee shop, you say something like "I always like coming here, the service is great alternatively, this line is taking forever!" Then say a joke or play off their response.
      If some random says, "Can you do me a favor," I'm going to say no.
      Similarly, if they ask for fun recommendations I'd help them but if I were less decent, they would be an easy target for robbery, by announcing, "Hey I'm an American tourist! I don't know what I'm doing."
      Stick to asking for directions, then jump into a conversation.

      @n8thegreat445 Před 3 lety +6

      an old trick to fake eye contact if you're way too nervous is to look at people in the point between their eyes. They won't really know and you can ask someone to test it on you to. For facial expressions, if you mean how to understand them better, I honestly think being open with others and asking them what that expressions means could help you form a deeper connection with them because you allow yourself to be vulnerable to them and they also get to help you out and understand you better. Good luck out there :)

    This has been somewhat helpful, that’s for sure, but it’s blatantly based on american (or at least not generally european) culture. Unless you’re at a party or _maybe_ a bar, starting to talk to someone like that genuinely makes you look like a crazy person. If not crazy, very weird. It’s just not something you do. The most I’ve gotten is “hey where’d you get those pants?” (visually very shy, awkward approach), and the most I’ve said is “omg is that Eragon? I love that book!” (said to a girl that I saw every day on the bus, and I had to build up to that for like 15 minutes). Both of these happened in my middle school, which was relatively small. This meant you’d see everyone around quite often.
    Those are the only two spontaneous encounters I’ve had that didn’t come off as mentally deranged/senile. A paradise for introverts, until you really need to say something to a stranger...
    For parties/people you don’t know that well but enough to attempt conversation this is still a useful vid, but I just wanted to say this :)

    1) Hey I don't think I've met you yet. I'm ______
    2) Hey I know this is totally random but _____ (whatever you notice about the person or situation)
    3) Tourist Technique (Allow yourself to be the lost tourist and ask locals for recommendations) "Hey I'm new to the area do you ___"
    4) Ben Franklin Method (Ask for a small favor and then start the conversation; indirect method)
    5) Spontaneous Compliment follows by a Cold Read "Wow you've got great style are you a fashion designer?"; Has to be genuine and avoid complimenting body
    Thanks for everything Charlie!!

    Love these tips! Definitely true bout the body comment making people uncomfortable! Someone did the "cold read" technique with me one day, complimenting my dress asking if I'm into fashion, and then proceeded to say "I couldn't help but notice you have a beautiful body shape, sorry but I had to look" something like that 😬 All I wanted to do was leave that convo asap!!!

    Nice to hear your voice again Charlie! Hope Ben isn’t completely burnt out on making videos haha. I just wanted to let y’all know that I love this video format with the animation and I think that it has a lot of potential. Once critique that I have for y’all is that the characters were not very diverse and I think that can hinder the message that this video has. Besides the one black woman, all of the characters seemed to be white, especially in the party scene. I believe that it’s important to represent the wide variety of people whose lives you have positively impacted, including mine! Hope y’all are doing well and look forward to seeing more on your channel!
