  • In rhetoric, chiasma (from the Greek χιάζω: "to shape like the letter Χ"), is a reversal of grammatical structures in successive phrases or clauses. In linguistic stylistics, it can mean a repetition of the parts in reverse order, which on a conceptual and structural level has inspired the work Chiasma per orchestra (for a detailed description of the work, see petterdyndahl.no/kommentarer.html).
In 1993 I submitted the composition to the Fourth Annual Vienna Modern Masters Orchestral Recording Award Competition, and was awarded the third prize category, which meant that I was offered a record release on the Vienna Modern Masters international label. However, due to various issues regarding copyright and supplemental funding, the recording was never made. After a few years I took up the piece again, and a revised edition was completed in 2000. This is the version recorded on the present demo soundtrack, which was realized using the 1990 sound module E-mu Proteus/2 Orchestral.
    Score available on demand.
The slideshow consists of chiastic patterns found in art and architecture from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Hieronymus Bosch, and back again.
