  • I have been reading about Kolrosing (or spelt Kohlrosing depending where you read the word) and I was really keen to give it a go.
Kohlrosing is the Scandinavian tradition of incising thin decorative lines and patterns in carved wood and filling with dark powders or colored wax, etc. for contrast. So the knives for this purpose (although you can just use a carving knife) tend to have a shallower bevel to them, and are used a little bit like a pen from examples and videos I've seen of people doing the craft.
I couldn't find any knives that were in my budget or easy to import at the moment, so I decided to make one from a small piece of 8mm HSS bar. I've made a few woodturning tools from this before and they've all worked really well and seem to hold their edge well enough.
This is about as simple as tool building can get, grind an edge, make and fit a handle, then hone and use. Nothing complicated, but hopefully the process is enjoyable to watch and it creates a useable tool that should be perfect for what I want.
    Hope you enjoy it!
    Thanks for watching!

Thank you! It's been a useful tool to add a bit of interest to certain projects. I decorated an axe handle with it shortly after this.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to having a play around with it and seeing what patterns or designs I can make.

Brilliant! Wish I had the kit to make the blade myself.

You could probably do it with less kit, a grinder and an oil stone would probably be enough, and they use a branch to make a handle possible.

Would converting round file work too?

It would (I think, but not 100% sure), but a file is normally even harder than HSS so might take more effort to make it with grinding etc.

Useless- too fast and can't see whats going on. Irritating jangling noise in background.

Thabks for your comment. I've been trying to improve my film technique, it's tricky but i think I've got better the last 12 months. When I did this I was earning no money from CZcams, so I guess you get what you pay for. I was just using my phone and trying to make it work.
The whole process is detailed in woodworking crafts magazine if you'd like to see it st3p by step.
